His memoir, Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers, is the clearest first-person account of the first part. The record of his career and the legal aftermath also helps separate his own explanation of his motives from what happened in court.
Who was Daniel Ellsberg?
Ellsberg was a defense analyst who worked at the RAND Corporation and the U.S. Department of Defense before becoming an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War. His official biography describes his professional path, his time in Vietnam as a State Department observer, and his later peace activism. Ellsberg died on June 16, 2023.
That background matters because the Pentagon Papers were not an outside observer’s account. They were a classified study of U.S. decision-making in Vietnam, and Ellsberg had worked within the policy world whose choices the study examined.
Why did Ellsberg release the Pentagon Papers?
In Ellsberg’s retrospective, the decision grew out of a change in conscience rather than a single professional dispute. He wrote that meeting Gandhian draft resisters helped him see ways to oppose the war. As he put it, “As it was, their moral courage was contagious.” The quotation and account appear in his extended biography.

Ellsberg later described the disclosure as a decision to risk his career and freedom to expose what he saw as deceptions and delusions shaping U.S. foreign policy. That is his account of his motive, not a neutral finding about every official involved. His memoir page summarizes the act in his own words: “In 1971 I released the Pentagon Papers, a 7,000-page top-secret study of U.S. decision-making in Vietnam, to the New York Times and the Washington Post.”

For Ellsberg, the papers were evidence of a widening gap between official accounts and the history of U.S. policy. That interpretation is central to Secrets; it is useful to read it as an insider’s retrospective rather than as a complete, independently adjudicated account of every policy decision.
What happened after the leak?
The government tried to halt publication
The Nixon administration obtained an injunction against publication, and the dispute reached the Supreme Court. The Associated Press reports that on June 30, 1971, the Court ruled 6–3 in favor of allowing publication to resume. That ruling addressed the government’s effort to stop publication; it was not a ruling on Ellsberg’s criminal liability.

Ellsberg’s criminal case ended in a mistrial
Ellsberg was charged with theft, conspiracy, and violations of the Espionage Act. According to the Associated Press, evidence of government-ordered wiretappings and break-ins emerged, and the case ended in a mistrial. It is therefore inaccurate to describe this outcome as an acquittal or as a court decision finding that the disclosure itself was lawful.
How do Ellsberg’s books tell different parts of the story?
Ellsberg’s books address distinct subjects rather than forming interchangeable versions of the same story. Secrets is the direct first-person account of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers. The Doomsday Machine draws on his experience with nuclear-war planning, while Papers on the War collects and revises Vietnam-related writing. Truth and Consequence is a posthumous collection of previously unpublished work on catastrophe, civil resistance, and hope.

For a reader who wants Ellsberg’s account of the disclosure, Penguin Random House’s Secrets listing identifies the paperback edition and ISBN. The publisher’s record concerns that edition; Ellsberg’s website gives 2002 as the memoir’s publication year.
For the broader arc, Ellsberg’s book listings distinguish his Vietnam writing from his work on nuclear policy. Bloomsbury’s listing for Truth and Consequence identifies its audiobook edition and running time, but does not establish availability through a particular retailer.

What does “foreboding” mean in Ellsberg’s story?
The word points beyond the Pentagon Papers to Ellsberg’s warnings about nuclear policy. His experience with nuclear-war planning informed The Doomsday Machine, a different subject from the Vietnam disclosures. Taken together, these strands show an insider who came to see secrecy and official reassurance as risks when the public could not scrutinize decisions with far-reaching consequences. They do not establish that the Pentagon Papers alone ended the Vietnam War or caused the end of the Nixon presidency.
