The DALI IO-12 is a premium 370 g over-ear headphone for listeners who put sound, materials and wired flexibility ahead of class-leading noise cancellation, compact travel or extensive app features. Reviewers praise its detailed, weighty presentation and comfort, but its large build and cumbersome case make the luxury proposition less convincing on the move. Whether it is worth the cost depends on which side of that trade-off matters more to you.
What the DALI IO-12 offers
DALI describes the IO-12 as a closed-back, circumaural headphone built around a 50 mm full-range driver with the company’s SMC-based magnet system. Its connectivity spans Bluetooth 5.2, USB-C audio and a 3.5 mm mini-jack, so it can serve as a wireless headphone or connect to a source by cable. The official specification lists AAC, aptX, aptX HD and aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codecs. DALI’s specifications also list 25 ohms impedance in passive mode, a 10–48,000 Hz frequency range at +/-3 dB, and support for 16–24-bit input at 32, 44.1, 48 or 96 kHz.
DALI lists three active noise-cancellation modes and two sound profiles, called Hi-Fi and Bass. Those options offer a simple choice of listening modes, not the extensive equalizer or ANC adjustments available in some competitors’ companion apps. The specification is a list of capabilities; it does not establish that noise cancellation matches the best in the category.
How the IO-12 sounds
Listening impressions from reviewers are consistently positive about the core sound. Stuff’s Simon Lucas, in a review published 7 November 2023, praised the sound alongside the headphone’s premium tactile feel. Tom’s Guide’s 2025 review highlights detail, bass weight and soundstage. These are reviewers’ judgments, rather than guarantees that every listener will prefer the tuning.

#1 Best Overall
- Hi-Res Audio Certified: Immerse yourself in sound unlike anything you’ve experienced before. Hear every breath and drumbeat with a heightened sense of clarity and realism that will fill your senses.
- DALI SMC Technology: The io-12’s are the world's first headphones to feature DALI’s patented Soft Magnetic Compound magnet system for crystal clear, near distortion-free sound that brings you closer to reality.
- 35-Hour of Battery Life: With up to 35 hours of peerless noise-canceling playback, you can leave your charge behind with confidence.
- Wired or Wireless: No matter what the connection method the IO-12 offers reference sound quality in every listening situation. Connect them wirelessly with Bluetooth AptX Adaptive or use your headphones amplifier to connect them as high-end passive headphones.
- Luxury Design: Enjoy hours of comfortable listening with a real leather headband and oversized square ear pads. Includes a travel case.
The Bass profile gives listeners a more bass-forward option, while Hi-Fi is the other onboard profile. There is no companion app for fine-grained EQ adjustment, so listeners who want to shape the sound themselves have fewer software tools than they may find elsewhere. The appeal is strongest if the reported balance and detail suit your taste as delivered.
Noise cancellation: useful, not a class leader
The IO-12’s ANC can reduce some background chatter, according to RTINGS’ review, but its testing found difficulty reducing low-frequency aircraft-engine rumble. Tom’s Guide likewise considered the ANC adequate for ambient noise but behind top competitors. That makes noise cancellation a supporting feature here, not a strong reason to choose the IO-12 over premium Sony or Bose models if frequent flights are your main use.

Fit, comfort and portability
DALI lists the IO-12 at 370 g. Reviewers describe it as comfortable, but also large: RTINGS notes that movement can make it slip, and that heat or sweat may build around the leather earcups. Thick glasses can interfere with the seal and reduce bass, according to RTINGS; fit and results will vary by listener.
Stuff describes real leather on the headband and earpads, which contributes to the headphone’s premium tactile character but will not suit everyone’s material preferences. The travel case is another practical compromise: RTINGS calls it cumbersome. The IO-12’s size and case are worth considering if your routine involves a packed bag, commuting or listening while moving around.

Connections, battery and everyday controls
Alongside Bluetooth, the IO-12 supports both USB-C digital audio and 3.5 mm analog playback. Stuff reports that USB-C lets the integrated DAC handle audio up to 24-bit/96 kHz, and that Bluetooth multipoint is supported. These options are useful if you switch between wireless listening and wired sources; a wired connection does not provide microphone support, according to RTINGS.
DALI claims up to 35 hours of battery playback. That is a manufacturer maximum, not an independently guaranteed runtime for every listening setup. Stuff’s reviewer considered the claim achievable with ANC off and moderate volume, but that is one reviewer’s experience; actual endurance depends on settings and use.

TechRadar’s 4 November 2023 review describes the physical controls as dependable but not customizable. With no app for EQ or ANC adjustment noted by Tom’s Guide, the approach favors straightforward onboard operation over extensive personalization.

The IO-12 is best assessed by deciding which features you value most. Against premium wireless alternatives, the relevant trade-offs are sound preference, ANC performance, fit and portability, wired options, battery claims, and software control—not a single feature that makes it the best choice for everyone.

|---|---|---|
| Sound | Reviewers praise detail, bass weight and soundstage; DALI includes Hi-Fi and Bass profiles. | A strong candidate if you like its reported presentation and do not need app-based EQ. |
| Noise cancellation | Reviewers find it useful for some ambient noise, but weaker on aircraft rumble than leading Sony or Bose models. | Look elsewhere if transport noise is your main problem to solve. |
| Portability | 370 g; reviewers describe a large form and a cumbersome case. | Less appealing for travel or listening while moving if compactness and stability are priorities. |

Are the DALI IO-12 worth it?
Tom’s Guide considers the high price difficult to justify for many buyers. The value case is narrower: you need to prize the reported sound quality, premium materials and choice of wired connections enough to accept a large headphone, limited software customization and less capable ANC. If noise cancellation, portability or features per unit of cost come first, the compromises are significant. If sound and construction come first—and you like the listening balance reviewers describe—the IO-12 makes a more coherent luxury purchase.
What Hi-Fi?’s 2023 page is an early hands-on account, not a definitive full review: it described promising listening impressions while saying a longer test was needed for a final verdict. Its launch-era prices should not be mistaken for current retail pricing.
