On October 5, 2026, search-industry coverage focused on Google’s spam-update rationale and crawl-to-index timing estimates, a correction that Search Console dark mode was a joke, two Google Ads changes, and OpenAI’s planned test of visual ads in ChatGPT. The items differ in status: some are event reporting, one is a corrected non-announcement, and others are a documented beta or a planned test.
Google’s spam-update comments were event reporting
Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google discussed spam and search quality at its three-day Search Central Live Deep Dive Europe event in Barcelona. The recap attributed its event notes to John Campbell of ROAST. According to that reporting, Google said the growing volume of newly published content contributes to more spam, and that it uses AI to help detect spam. This is a secondhand account of event remarks, not a new Google policy announcement or a direct transcript.
The event recap also described three ongoing challenges in evaluating search quality: search formats have broadened, the number of pages and sites has grown, and spam practices require continued detection. It said core updates act on content at page level rather than targeting an entire domain.
Campbell’s event summary warned of more spam updates and new spam thresholds, with scaled, low-effort content identified as a risk. That wording is Campbell’s summary, not a verbatim Google quotation. The report also repeated a figure of 40 billion spam pages filtered per day, but noted it was previously published rather than a new 2026 announcement; the cited recap does not establish the figure’s original publication year.

Google’s crawl, indexing and serving times are estimates
Search Engine Roundtable relayed figures that Gary Illyes presented as internal Google data. The publication emphasized that the timings were an exercise to see whether the audience could relate to numbers drawn from internal slides, not service guarantees. The reported slowest outcomes sometimes extended from weeks to never, or from months to never.

These are figures reproduced from the event coverage, not expected turnaround times for a particular page or site. The stages depend on each other: Google must crawl a page before it can index it, so a delay earlier in the process can push back later stages. Illyes reportedly described the figures as an exercise based on numbers pulled internally for presentation slides.

Search Console dark mode was not a feature announcement
An initial Search Engine Roundtable story said dark mode was coming to Search Console and attributed a presentation slide to Ariel Kroszynski, a Google senior software engineer. The publication later corrected the story: it was told the slide was a joke, and John Mueller confirmed that interpretation. Dark mode should not be treated as a Google product roadmap item.
Google Ads: automated promotions and campaign localization
The two Ads items have different levels of confirmation and control. Automated promotions were reported from an email sent to some advertisers, while campaign localization is described in Google’s Ads Help documentation as a beta tool.

Automated promotions: reported email scope
The reported email says the feature identifies site promotions such as coupons and deals and applies them to eligible campaigns. Its stated scope is limited to Search and Performance Max campaigns that have linked location assets and do not already have promotion assets. Because the account of the change comes from an email reported by Search Engine Roundtable, it should not be generalized to every advertiser or campaign.
Campaign localization: a documented beta workflow
Google describes its AI campaign localization tool as a way to localize entire Search campaigns for new languages and regions using generative AI. It creates a separate campaign and leaves the original unchanged. The tool can translate headlines, descriptions, sitelinks, callouts and keywords, as well as text overlays in images. Landing pages can be localized through an optional site code snippet or a URL update workflow.

Google’s Help page lists English (US) as the eligible source language. The listed target languages are Dutch, French, French (Canada), German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal/European), Spanish (Castilian/Spain), and Spanish (Latin American & Caribbean). Google says it plans to add languages by the end of 2026; Performance Max support begins in September 2026.
The original campaign must be active or paused and have supported source-language assets. Election-verified customers are not eligible. The workflow includes a translation review table, and the localized campaign is paused by default so the advertiser can review it before publishing. Budgets and bids are copied exactly; the tool does not convert currencies.

A duplicate ad-information control was an isolated observation
The roundup linked to a report of a sponsored result that appeared to show two three-dot controls associated with ad or result information. The report author called it a likely bug and described different behavior when clicking the controls in the observed example. This was an isolated observation, not a confirmed Google change.
OpenAI announced a limited ChatGPT visual-ad test
OpenAI’s October 5 announcement said it planned to test a visual ad format during image generation later that month in the United States with an initial group of advertisers. The planned test was for Free and Go users, not a broad rollout. OpenAI said the ads would be clearly labeled and separate from the generated image, and that advertising would not influence ChatGPT’s answers.
OpenAI also described measurement and attribution relationships for advertisers. It named Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp for conversion-data integrations; AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin for attribution; and Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL for full-funnel or advanced measurement. It said it was also working with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic on geo-based incrementality experiments. These are partners named by OpenAI, not endorsements or evidence that a particular service is right for a campaign.
The announcement included early partner-reported results: DV Rockerbox said WeightWatchers’ attributed CPA was 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark; WorkMagic said 67% of incremental purchases for Dose were net-new customers; and Triple Whale said 93% of Portland Leather’s ChatGPT Ads visitors were new. Those are partner findings presented by OpenAI, not independent benchmarks.
