CVE-2026-21533 is a local elevation-of-privilege vulnerability in Windows Remote Desktop Services, not a remote code execution flaw. Microsoft rates it 7.8 High under CVSS 3.1, as displayed by NIST’s National Vulnerability Database (NVD). Apply the security update that matches the affected Windows product and servicing context; do not choose a patch based only on another Windows version’s build number.
What is CVE-2026-21533?
Microsoft describes CVE-2026-21533 as an improper privilege-management flaw in Windows Remote Desktop Services (RDS). An authorized attacker who already has local access can exploit it to elevate privileges. The description does not characterize it as an unauthenticated internet attack or a remote code execution vulnerability. NVD’s vulnerability record attributes the description to Microsoft.
NVD displays Microsoft’s CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.8 High, with vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. The vector indicates a local attack requiring low privileges and no user interaction, with high potential impact to confidentiality, integrity and availability. Is CVE-2026-21533 remotely exploitable?
The cited vulnerability description specifies local privilege escalation by an authorized attacker. It does not say that an unauthenticated remote attacker can exploit the flaw over the internet. Remote Desktop Services being the affected component does not, by itself, make this a remote-exploitation vulnerability.

How does it relate to February 2026 Patch Tuesday?
JPCERT/CC’s February 12, 2026 alert lists CVE-2026-21533 among Microsoft’s February security updates. A Microsoft-attributed record mirrored by CIRCL Vulnerability-Lookup dates the fixes to February 10, 2026. JPCERT/CC’s alert points administrators to Microsoft update channels.
NVD also records CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog information for this CVE: an added date of February 10, 2026, and a due date of March 3, 2026. Those are recorded dates, not confirmation of the catalog’s current status or of present-day exploitation. Check the live NVD entry and CISA catalog before using KEV status or a deadline for current compliance decisions.

Use Microsoft’s Security Update Guide to determine applicability for the exact Windows product, release, architecture and servicing context. These examples are not a complete affected-products list. Do not apply either build number to a different Windows release, or infer that only Server 2016 and Server 2022 are in scope. - Identify the system precisely. Record its Windows product and release, architecture, current OS build and servicing context. For managed systems, include whether the device uses standard cumulative updates or a supported hotpatch path.
- Check Microsoft’s entry for the CVE. Open the Microsoft Security Update Guide entry and match your system to the applicable product and update. Check whether Microsoft lists a newer superseding update.
- Install through a Microsoft update channel. JPCERT/CC names Microsoft Update, Windows Update and the Microsoft Update Catalog as options. Use the channel appropriate to your device’s management and servicing process. JPCERT/CC’s February 2026 alert
- Verify after installation. Check the installed update and resulting OS build against Microsoft’s applicable guidance. A build number from a different product or release is not evidence that this system is fixed.
The vulnerability’s remediation is a Microsoft software update. An antivirus product, hardware device or general security subscription is not a substitute for installing the applicable Windows update.
