If you administer a vBulletin forum, compare its branch and patch level with the affected-version boundaries below and update any installation that is below the corresponding fixed release.
What CVE-2020-12720 is
The National Vulnerability Database (NVD) describes CVE-2020-12720 as incorrect access control in vBulletin. NVD assigns it a CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.8, Critical. Its record also lists a CVSS 2.0 score of 7.5, High; the 9.8 figure refers specifically to CVSS 3.1.
The original alert’s word “undisclosed” describes the initial announcement: The Hacker News reported on May 11, 2020, that vBulletin had issued an important patch without disclosing the underlying vulnerability. The issue is now identified publicly by its CVE number and described in NVD’s record.
Which vBulletin versions are affected
NVD lists these affected release ranges. “Before” means a release earlier than the specified patch level; it does not mean every vBulletin version is affected.

| vBulletin branch | Affected versions according to NVD | Fixed level to check |
|---|---|---|
| 5.5.x | Before 5.5.6 Patch Level 1 (5.5.6pl1) | 5.5.6pl1 or later in the branch |
| 5.6.0 | Before 5.6.0 Patch Level 1 (5.6.0pl1) | 5.6.0pl1 or later in the branch |
| 5.6.1 | Before 5.6.1 Patch Level 1 (5.6.1pl1) | 5.6.1pl1 or later in the branch |
These boundaries come from the NVD entry for CVE-2020-12720. Confirm the branch as well as the patch level: the same-looking patch-level suffix applies to different branch versions.
How to check and patch a forum
- Identify the installed version. Use your vBulletin administration and installation records to determine the exact branch and patch level. Do not rely on a broad label such as “vBulletin 5.”
- Compare it with the relevant boundary. If the installation is earlier than the corresponding fixed level in the table, treat it as affected by the version range NVD lists for this CVE.
- Follow vBulletin’s official update instructions. NVD links to a vendor announcement titled “vBulletin 5.6.1 Security Patch Level 1.” Consult the vendor’s current official instructions for the update appropriate to your branch. The NVD record does not provide installation steps, so do not assume that a single file change or generic procedure is sufficient.
- Verify the result. After applying the vendor update, check the installed branch and patch level again and confirm that it is at the applicable fixed level or later.
If the forum cannot be updated immediately, consult vBulletin’s official guidance for any interim mitigation. The available record establishes the patch-level boundaries, but does not establish a specific workaround.

Keep this 2020 fix separate from later vBulletin alerts
CVE-2020-12720 has its own affected-version boundaries. Reports about CVE-2025-48827 and CVE-2025-48828, or the separately reported CVE-2026-61511, concern different vulnerability records and may have different remediation guidance. Do not use their version requirements to decide whether a forum is patched for CVE-2020-12720.
