Yes. On May 30, 2024, NASA’s Curiosity rover drove over a rock in Gale Crater and cracked it open. Yellow crystals inside were identified by the rover’s arm-mounted instruments as elemental sulfur—the pure form of the element, rather than sulfur combined with other elements in a mineral. It was the first discovery of elemental sulfur on Mars.
How Curiosity exposed the crystals
The find happened by accident: Curiosity’s wheel rolled over the rock and fractured it, revealing a yellow interior. The rover did not drill into the stone to look for crystals.
On June 7, 2024, Curiosity photographed the exposed fragments with its Mast Camera (Mastcam). NASA Science identifies the fragment field as “Convict Lake” and says it spans about 5 inches (13 centimeters). That image was taken on the mission’s 4,208th Martian day, or sol. What the yellow crystals were
Curiosity’s arm-mounted instruments identified the material as elemental, or pure, sulfur. This distinction matters: sulfur had been found on Mars before as part of compounds, including sulfates, but this was the first time scientists found sulfur in its elemental form. Why pure sulfur surprised scientists
Curiosity was exploring terrain rich in sulfates—salts containing sulfur that can form as water evaporates. Those compounds fit the region’s known mineral story. A rock made of elemental sulfur did not: NASA says pure sulfur forms only under a narrow range of conditions that scientists had not associated with this location.
Scientists also do not yet know how the pure sulfur relates to the nearby sulfur-bearing minerals. Curiosity’s identification establishes what the exposed material is; it does not establish the process that formed it. The discovery therefore raises questions about past fluids, evaporation, volcanic activity, or other chemistry, rather than settling which explanation is correct.

What the discovery does—and does not—tell us
The finding is a geological clue, not evidence of life. Its significance is that it reveals chemical conditions in Gale Crater that scientists did not predict from the surrounding sulfate deposits. NASA has not identified the origin of the elemental sulfur, so the image and mineral identification should not be treated as proof of a particular past environment.
Curiosity project scientist Ashwin Vasavada described the unexpected find this way: “Finding a field of stones made of pure sulfur is like finding an oasis in the desert.” NASA’s report, including Vasavada’s statement
