This gives visitors native swipe, touchpad, and keyboard scrolling. Optional newer CSS features can add generated navigation buttons and markers, but their browser support must be checked separately.
How a CSS-only carousel works
A basic CSS-only carousel is a scrollable row, not a scripted slideshow. The browser handles scrolling; CSS sets the row layout and where scrolling should settle. The items remain ordinary page content, so the strip still works when snapping is unavailable or disabled.
Start with a labeled region containing a list. Put horizontal overflow on the list, arrange its items in a row, and define snapping on the scroll container and its children. The CSS Scroll Snap guide on MDN explains the related properties.

}Here, overflow-x: auto enables horizontal scrolling when the row is wider than its viewport. The grid properties lay the list items out in a horizontal sequence. scroll-snap-type belongs on the scrolling element; scroll-snap-align belongs on each item. The proximity value lets the browser snap when a scroll ends near a snap point without forcing every scroll to land exactly on one.

Choose the scrolling and snapping behavior
Let the content and layout determine whether to use free scrolling or stronger paging. A carousel showing several partially visible cards may feel better with gentle snapping; a one-card-at-a-time presentation may warrant stricter alignment.

Mandatory snapping can make content difficult to reach or navigate when items are taller than the visible area, item sizes vary, or the viewport changes. Test at narrow widths, with zoom, and with content that may grow; use proximity or omit snapping if mandatory alignment traps or skips parts of content. MDN discusses these considerations in its scroll snap documentation.

Keep the carousel usable without special controls
The basic pattern needs no arrows: visitors can swipe, use a touchpad, or scroll the strip with a keyboard when it can receive focus. Do not hide adjacent content merely to imitate a slideshow if that makes it harder to discover or reach. WAI notes that people may miss content placed in a carousel and that keyboard operation, clear information about what is shown, and control of movement matter. See the WAI carousel tutorial.
- Use a meaningful label for the region and meaningful link or item text.
- Check keyboard focus order and visibility. Do not assume that items outside the visible portion are hidden from assistive technology or that CSS announces a change in the visible item.
- Avoid automatic rotation unless it is genuinely needed. If content moves automatically, provide an effective way to pause it.
- Make any controls visibly identifiable, operable, and distinguishable by more than color alone.
WAI’s carousel styling guidance recommends that non-inline buttons and links be at least 44 × 44 CSS pixels and calls for sufficient contrast. Leave space around controls to make them easier to use by touch and by people with reduced dexterity.

When to use newer CSS carousel controls
MDN documents newer CSS carousel features, including generated scroll buttons and markers, in its CSS carousels guide. These features add a control layer; they are not a prerequisite for a scroll-snap carousel. Check support in the browsers and versions your audience uses before depending on them. The available evidence does not establish a complete current support matrix.
If you use generated controls, give each button an accessible name and make its disabled state understandable. MDN describes generated-content alternative text for naming controls in some implementations, while also noting that accessibility support can vary. A decorative arrow glyph alone is not a reliable accessible label. Keep the underlying content as a usable scrolling list if these newer controls are unavailable.

Choose between a scrollable strip and a full carousel widget

Prefer the strip when the goal is simply to browse a row of related cards. Build a richer widget only when its extra interaction is needed and you can support its additional accessibility and browser-compatibility requirements.
