A cryptocurrency exchange is a service for buying, selling, or trading crypto assets. Many centralized exchanges also hold customers’ assets and manage the private keys needed to access them—but trading and custody are separate functions, and a platform may combine both. Before choosing one, check what it will cost to make your specific transaction, who controls the assets afterward, and which protections apply in your country.

What is a cryptocurrency exchange?

An exchange provides a way to trade crypto assets. Some platforms match customer buy and sell orders on an order book; others offer a simpler purchase or conversion route that quotes a price directly. A single company may also provide brokerage, custody, transfers, or other services. The name “exchange” alone does not tell you which functions it performs or which legal entity provides them.

That distinction matters because trading is about how you buy or sell, while custody is about who controls access to assets. A centralized account may show a balance without giving you control of the private keys associated with the assets. Read the provider’s custody terms and identify the legal entity holding the account.

What is the difference between an exchange and a wallet?

A wallet manages the private keys that authorize access to crypto assets; it does not literally contain the assets themselves. An exchange account is a service relationship that can include a trading interface and, often, custody. Some users leave assets with the exchange; others withdraw them to a wallet they control.

Arrangement Who controls access? Main responsibility
Exchange custody The platform or its custodian manages the keys and account access under its terms. Assess the provider’s safeguards, recovery process, failure terms, and applicable protections.
Self-custody You control the keys or recovery phrase. Keep the keys secure and maintain a usable recovery method. Loss, theft, damage, or compromise can permanently remove access.

A hardware wallet is one physical form of self-custody wallet, not a guarantee against loss. With self-custody, responsibility for protecting keys and recovery information moves to you. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance advises: “Store your seed phrase in a secure place and do not share it with anyone.”

Is my crypto safe on an exchange?

No exchange account is risk-free, and a displayed account balance does not by itself establish that assets are protected in every failure scenario. Ask how the provider safeguards assets and keys, who can access them, whether custody is outsourced, whether hot or cold wallets are used, and whether customer assets may be lent or commingled. Also find out what happens if the provider fails, how account recovery works, and how to submit a complaint.

Protections depend on the service, asset, provider, and jurisdiction. In the United States, SEC materials describe protections associated with specified registered securities intermediaries and caution that crypto platforms may combine functions often separated among regulated firms. This does not mean every crypto exchange or crypto account has those protections, or that the SEC registers every type of crypto exchange. Verify the local legal entity and applicable rules rather than inferring protection from a platform’s branding.

In the EU, MiCA Article 75 sets custody and administration duties for covered crypto-asset service providers. These include client-position records, custody policies, periodic statements, segregation, procedures for returning assets, and liability provisions. Article 75(6) says covered providers must have procedures to return client crypto-assets or the means of access as soon as possible. This is a scoped EU requirement, not a global consumer guarantee.

Are proof-of-reserves reports the same as audits?

No. Proof of reserves is not the same as a financial statement audit conducted under relevant standards. A reserve assessment may offer a limited view at a particular point in time; depending on its scope and method, it may not show all liabilities or activity between assessments. The SEC has cautioned investors not to treat proof-of-reserves as equivalent to a PCAOB-standard financial statement audit.

When reviewing a report, check its date, what assets and liabilities it includes, the assessment method, who performed it, the level of assurance, and how often it is updated. A reserve report alone does not establish that customer assets are guaranteed or prove an exchange’s overall solvency.

What fees should I compare?

There is no single exchange fee. The total cost depends on the purchase route and what you do next. A simple instant purchase or conversion may use different pricing and charges from an order-book trade. A quoted price can include a spread—the difference between the quoted price and a reference market price—as well as a stated fee. Payment methods, account tier, trading pair, activity, and location may also affect costs.

For order-book trading, maker and taker describe how your order interacts with available liquidity. A maker order adds liquidity to the book; a taker order immediately matches with an existing order. Fees may differ for each, and may change with trading volume or account tier.

Provider schedules illustrate why like-for-like comparisons matter. Kraken’s published fee page separates instant-trade charges from its Pro order-book schedule and notes that payment fees may also apply. Its support article, updated October 1, 2026, says Kraken Pro rates depend on 30-day volume, pair, and maker/taker status; its schedule states an effective date of October 5, 2026. These are dated, provider-specific examples, not a market benchmark or endorsement. Recheck current terms, and do not compare one provider’s basic purchase quote with another’s advanced order-book rate as though they were the same transaction.

To compare providers, price the same amount of the same asset using the same payment route and order type, then include the planned withdrawal. Use each provider’s current fee pages; fees and terms can change.

How do I choose a crypto exchange?

Start with your country and intended transaction. Confirm that the service is available to you, identify the legal entity providing it, and check that the asset and the specific deposit or withdrawal network you need are supported.

  1. Confirm local availability and legal entity. Read the account terms to see which company provides the service and what rules apply in your location.
  2. Check custody and failure terms. Find out who holds the keys, whether assets may be lent or commingled, how the provider handles custody, and what happens if it fails.
  3. Review security and recovery. Check multi-factor authentication, withdrawal controls, phishing protections, and the process for regaining account access. If you plan to self-custody, make sure you can securely protect and recover your keys.
  4. Calculate the full transaction cost. Compare the same purchase route, amount, order type, payment method, and withdrawal plan, including quoted pricing, trading and payment charges, and transfer costs.
  5. Verify asset and network support. Confirm that the exchange supports both your intended asset and the exact network you plan to use. Check withdrawal limits and processing terms before buying; a listed token is not necessarily withdrawable on every network.
  6. Evaluate transparency claims. If the provider cites proof of reserves, inspect the report’s date, scope, liabilities, method, assurance level, and third-party provider rather than treating the claim as a guarantee.

Compare the official terms for the transaction and account you actually expect to use. No single exchange is best for every country, asset, or custody preference.
