The Crucial P310 2TB packs high rated PCIe 4.0 speeds and a substantial game library into a single-sided, 30 mm M.2 2230 SSD. It is a compelling upgrade candidate for a handheld or compact PC that specifically accepts this size, but its QLC memory, finite write endurance, and slowdown during very large writes make it less attractive for sustained data-heavy work. Check your device’s exact requirements before buying.

What is the Crucial P310 2TB?

The P310 2TB, model CT2000P310SSD2, is an M.2 2230 SSD: it measures 22 mm wide and 30 mm long. It uses a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface and NVMe 2.0, and its single-sided construction is intended for compact devices with the appropriate slot and clearance. It is not the longer M.2 2280 format common in desktop PCs.

Micron specifies sequential performance of up to 7,100 MB/s read and 6,000 MB/s write. Tom’s Hardware lists random performance up to 1,000K IOPS read and 1,200K IOPS write. These are peak product specifications, not guaranteed results in every computer or workload. Micron’s product announcement describes the drive as designed for high speed and capacity in handheld gaming; that is the manufacturer’s positioning, not independent validation (Micron’s announcement; Tom’s Hardware specifications and review).

Will it fit a Steam Deck, ROG Ally, or laptop?

Only buy it if your exact device model supports an M.2 2230 NVMe drive and its installation guidance allows the replacement. Micron names Steam Deck, ASUS ROG Ally, certain Microsoft Surface models, and select Dell models as potential use cases, but those broad product families do not establish compatibility with every revision, configuration, or regional model.

Before ordering, check the device maker’s service manual or support page for the precise model number, drive dimensions, interface, and replacement procedure. A 2280 slot is not a substitute for a 2230 slot, and an adapter or enclosure should not be assumed to fit inside a handheld. Also confirm any device-specific warranty or support implications with its manufacturer; installation rules vary.

How fast is it for games and everyday use?

For a compatible device used mainly for games, applications, and ordinary file activity, the P310’s published peak speeds make it a capable high-capacity option. However, sequential read and write numbers alone do not predict how much faster games will load: results also depend on the game, the device, and the rest of its storage system. PC Gamer describes it as a capable 2230 option while cautioning that sequential performance is not necessarily the deciding factor for game loading (PC Gamer’s review).

Independent reviews found strong performance in several shorter tests. PCWorld reported good results in CrystalDiskMark, AS SSD, and a 48GB transfer test. Those results illustrate why the drive can feel fast in common bursts, but they do not establish its speed during a much longer write (PCWorld’s review and test results).

Does the P310 slow down during large transfers?

It can. PCWorld’s test sample began its 450GB write at more than 3GB/s, then slowed to 350 MB/s after its secondary write cache filled. That result came from PCWorld’s test setup and workload; it is not a universal sustained-write rate for every device. It does show why the headline 6,000 MB/s write rating should not be treated as a promise for a continuous, very large transfer.

For installing games or moving files in typical bursts, the cache behavior may matter little. If you regularly write hundreds of gigabytes at a time, work with large datasets, or use the drive for other sustained-write tasks, give long-transfer behavior more weight than peak ratings. PCWorld’s measured result and test context are described in its P310 review.

What do QLC memory and 440 TBW mean?

The P310 uses 232-layer Micron QLC NAND and a DRAM-less Phison E27T controller that uses Host Memory Buffer (HMB), according to Tom’s Hardware. QLC helps make high capacity available in the compact format, but the drive’s rated endurance is modest compared with modern TLC SSDs, as that review notes.

For the 2TB model, Tom’s Hardware lists an endurance rating of 440 TBW—440 terabytes written over the drive’s rated life. This is a specification, not a prediction that the SSD will fail immediately after that amount is written. Micron’s stated warranty runs for five years or until the published TBW limit is reached, whichever comes first. Buyers should read the warranty terms and confirm their use case with the manufacturer rather than treating the figure as a guarantee of a particular failure date (Tom’s Hardware’s specifications; Micron’s product information).

For a handheld used primarily to play games, download titles, and run everyday applications, the key question is whether the rated endurance and warranty suit your expected write volume. For frequent, heavy writes, compare compatible drives with sustained-write behavior and endurance that better fit that workload.

Does it run hot?

PC Gamer reported that its review unit ran hot over long stints. That is a reviewer observation under its review conditions, not proof that every P310 will overheat in every handheld or laptop. The target device’s airflow, enclosure, workload, and power management all affect operating temperatures. If you are choosing between compatible options for long gaming sessions or sustained work, include thermal behavior in the comparison and follow the device maker’s installation and cooling guidance.

Should you buy the P310 2TB?

The P310 makes sense when you have verified a 2230 NVMe slot, want the extra capacity, and expect mostly ordinary consumer workloads rather than frequent, very large continuous writes. Its blend of 2TB capacity and high peak ratings is useful in a compact drive, while QLC endurance and cache-related slowdown are real trade-offs.

If 1TB is enough, compare the 1TB P310 and other compatible 2230 drives rather than paying for unused capacity. If your work routinely involves huge write jobs, prioritize sustained-write performance and endurance.
