Crowley’s eWolf, an 82-foot electric harbor tug operating in San Diego Bay, carries a 6.2-megawatt-hour (MWh) main propulsion battery. It pairs that stored energy with two electric motors rated at 2,100 kilowatts (kW) each, and is designed to handle a full day of work on one charge when supported by its shore-side charging system.
How large is eWolf’s battery?
The main propulsion battery stores 6.2 MWh of energy, according to Crowley’s August 2024 specification sheet. That is a very large battery by consumer standards, but it is built for a commercial vessel that spends its working day assisting ships in port.
It is important to distinguish the battery’s energy capacity from the motors’ power rating. MWh describes how much energy the battery can store; kW describes the rate at which the motors can use energy to produce power. The figures are related, but they are not interchangeable.
How powerful is the electric tug?
eWolf has two electric motors rated at 2,100 kW apiece, for a combined rated output of 4,200 kW. Crowley lists a maximum speed of 12 knots and a bollard pull of 70 short tons. Bollard pull is a measure of the force a tug can exert while towing or holding position, not the weight of the vessel.
#1 Best Overall
- 2.4GHz High Frequency Control: With advanced anti-interference signal technology, the tugboat operates on a high-frequency band, allowing multiple boats to play simultaneously without any interference.
- Realistic Illumination: Equipped with a rotating searchlight and simulated glowing cabin, this design enhances the overall visual experience and adds a touch of authenticity to adventures on water.
- Dual Propeller Design: Featuring a dual propeller design, the remote control boat ensures smoother navigation and more powerful performance.
- Completely Waterproof: The entire boat is designed to be fully waterproof, eliminating any worries about electrical leaks and ensuring a safer and more durable usage.
- Safety without Switches: Equipped with a bottom water-sensing device, the toy boat only powers on when it touches the water and immediately shuts off when lifted, effectively preventing any potential harm to player.
Crowley describes eWolf as stronger than the conventional tug it replaced. The available specifications give eWolf’s bollard pull, but do not provide a directly comparable figure for that predecessor.
Where does eWolf operate, and is it in service?
Built by Master Boat Builders for Crowley, eWolf was delivered in January 2024 and christened in June 2024. The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District reported it operational in San Diego Bay in 2024, so the original projected mid-2023 service date is no longer the relevant schedule.

- User-Friendly Features: Adjustable steering rudder, speed modes, LED lights, and low battery alarm for an enhanced sailing experience.
- Durable and Powerful: Featuring a 2.4GHz system with a 30-meter range ensures interference-free operation even with multiple boats.
- Designed with an all-sealed waterproof cover and multiple strong locks to protect against water damage. The anti-collision design includes a protective bumper at the front.
- Convenient Charging: Includes a 3.7V 100mAh battery and USB charger, offering 13 mins of sailing time after just 25 minutes of charging.
- Ideal for pools, rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, this tugboat is perfect for outdoor adventures. It makes an excellent gift for special occasions like Christmas.
The district reported that eWolf displaced a diesel tug that used 30,000 gallons of fuel annually. That is the agency’s reported displacement figure, not a new measurement of eWolf’s 2026 operating performance.
How does the tug recharge?
eWolf’s operating plan includes shore-side charging supported by a microgrid. Crowley says the installation enables daily full-performance electric operation; its 2023 description covered modular shore-side battery storage alongside monitoring and safety systems. The shore-side system is infrastructure for charging the tug, not part of the tug’s stated 6.2 MWh propulsion battery capacity.

- Flexible to Control: The remote control tugboat can move forward, backward, and turn left or right, offering excellent control and flexibility in navigation.
- Long-Lasting Battery Life: Equipped with a 3.7V 600mAh lithium battery, the tugboat can be used continuously for up to 15 minutes on a single charge.
- Wide Control Range: With a 2.4Ghz frequency, the remote control offers a broad control range of up to 50 meters, allowing for a greater sailing experience.
- Waterproof Design: The boat features a sealed waterproof design, ensuring it can withstand splashes and brief immersion in water without any damage.
- Ideal for Outdoor Use: Given its robust construction and long-range control, this remote control tugboat is perfect for outdoor use, providing endless fun at lakes, ponds, or pools.
ABB says eWolf can complete a full day of work on one charge. That claim describes the intended operating capability with the charging system in place; it does not establish how much energy the tug uses on every shift or how often it must charge in actual service.
What environmental benefits have been reported?
Crowley estimates that, over the first 10 years and compared with a conventional tug, eWolf will reduce emissions by 178 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx), 2.5 tons of diesel particulate matter, and 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). These are company estimates against a conventional-tug comparison, not independently verified lifetime measurements.

The local air district’s 2024 report adds an operational context by describing the diesel tug displacement and its annual fuel use. Neither that report nor the company’s estimates establish measured emissions reductions across eWolf’s lifetime.
