Choose a compact crossbody if you plan to carry only essentials; choose a small backpack if you need room for items such as a refillable water bottle, rain gear, or a light layer. Both styles are permitted at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort as long as the bag stays within each resort’s published size limit. Neither style is established as more comfortable for everyone, and bags may be screened.
Crossbody bag or backpack: which fits your day?

Disney’s published rules specify size, screening, and prohibited items rather than requiring a particular bag style. planDisney has also listed crossbody bags and backpacks among the styles guests may bring. The decision is mainly about what you expect to carry and how you prefer to carry it—not a proven comfort or speed advantage.
Check the size limit for either resort
Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort both prohibit bags, backpacks, coolers, or suitcases larger than 24 inches long × 15 inches wide × 18 inches high (61 × 38 × 46 cm). These are the published limits on the official rules pages checked October 7, 2026. Disney says rules may change without notice, so review the relevant resort’s rules before your visit: Walt Disney World Resort Property Rules and Disneyland Resort Park Rules.
People, bags, and other items may be subject to screening or security checks at both resorts. Pack with screening in mind, and check the current prohibited-items list when deciding what to bring.

Decide what you need to carry
Choose a crossbody for a lighter load
If your plan is to carry just essentials, a compact crossbody can keep the bag itself small. Avoid choosing one that is so small that it forces you to leave behind something you genuinely need for the day.
Choose a backpack when you need more room
A backpack may suit a day when you expect to carry additional supplies. In a December 3, 2023 planDisney response, panelist Samantha described using a backpack for a portable phone charger, sunscreen, bandages, a jacket or sweatshirt, rain gear, and a refillable water bottle. Those are examples, not a required packing list; choose based on your plans and keep the bag within the park’s size limit.

Try your packed bag before you go
Pack the items you expect to bring and wear the bag for a while before traveling. This practical check can help you decide whether its size and carrying style suit you; it is not a guarantee that one style will feel better for every guest.

For Walt Disney World, the same planDisney response says that most attractions allow a backpack at the rider’s feet. It identifies TRON Lightcycle / Run as an exception, where larger loose articles must be stored in lockers in the queue. The response also notes that lockers are available to rent near park entrances. Because that advice dates to December 2023 and attraction procedures can change, check current instructions for the attractions you plan to ride.

Whichever style you choose, consider how you will manage your belongings when entering security and boarding attractions. The available guidance does not establish that either a crossbody or a backpack is universally faster or easier to handle.
