Allen Holub’s 2003 answer to “How do I create a client-side user interface in HTML?” was a Java Swing component called HTMLPane, a derivative of JEditorPane. It loads an HTML-described interface, handles local form submission, and returns entered values to the application as key/value properties. It was designed to make interface layout easier to write and maintain—not to render every possible HTML document.
What problem was HTMLPane designed to solve?
In his October 3, 2003 InfoWorld tutorial, Allen Holub argues that describing layout in HTML can be easier to write and maintain than building it entirely with Swing layout code. It can also separate presentation from business logic, making visual changes less entangled with application code. The tradeoff is that an HTML-based interface can be difficult to make feel like a good desktop user experience. Holub puts it plainly: “The significant downside of the HTML approach is that it’s difficult to create a good user experience with a HTML-based user interface, whether it’s created on the client side or server side.”
His goal is deliberately narrower than making a desktop application display arbitrary web pages. HTMLPane is an approach for specifying a Swing client interface in HTML, with application-specific behavior supplied by Java.
How does the example work?
- Load the interface: A Swing dialog loads an HTML file into an HTMLPane component.
- Collect user input: The page contains form fields, and the user fills them in within the dialog.
- Submit locally: A submit listener passes the form values back to the Java application as a
Propertiesobject. The values are application data; the example does not require posting the form to a remote web server. - Handle cancellation: A cancel listener provides a separate way to abandon the form.
This arrangement lets HTML describe the page structure while Java code remains responsible for the surrounding Swing application and the action taken on submitted data.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What can custom tags and links do?
Insert Swing components into the page
Holub describes custom tag handlers that can replace HTML tags with Swing components. Those components can participate in submission by contributing their values to the form data. This extends the page beyond ordinary HTML controls while keeping the overall interface description in HTML.
Control navigation behavior
The implementation also describes hyperlink handling for selected protocols and file extensions, optional host mapping, and popup behavior for links marked to open a new window. These are capabilities of the implementation described in the tutorial, not promises about how current Java releases behave.

What are the tradeoffs compared with Swing-coded layout?
| Consideration | HTML-described interface | Swing-coded layout |
|---|---|---|
| Writing and maintaining layout | Holub presents HTML as easier to write and maintain for layout. | Layout is expressed in Swing code rather than in an HTML page. |
| Separation of layout and application logic | HTML can keep much of the presentation description apart from business logic. | Layout code lives in the application’s Swing implementation. |
| Visual fidelity and user experience | The author warns that a good user experience can be difficult with an HTML-based interface. | The tutorial does not provide a measured comparison of user experience. |
| Rendering and control support | The described implementation has parser, CSS, table, and form-control limitations. | The article does not benchmark Swing rendering against HTMLPane. |
| Changing appearance | Keeping layout in HTML can make presentation changes less tied to business logic. | Presentation changes may require editing Swing layout code; the article provides no quantified maintenance comparison. |
What limitations did the 2003 implementation have?
Holub reports imperfect CSS and nested-table support, weak rendering of form controls, no JavaScript interpretation, and constraints imposed by the underlying parser. He also discusses Java 1.4-era issues, including newer button elements the parser did not support, and anticipated fixes in Java 1.5. Those details describe the implementation and expectations in 2003; they do not establish the behavior of current Java versions.
The practical implication is that the HTML approach required accepting a constrained subset of web-page behavior. The tutorial is best read as a historical design and implementation example, not as current guidance for choosing a Java UI toolkit. Anyone adapting the idea should verify the relevant Java documentation and implementation source for the specific environment they intend to use.
