In its 2025 Form 10-K, Coursera reported 5.0 million GenAI course enrollments during 2025 and 6.0 million Professional Certificate enrollments, up 22% from 2024. A June 2026 announcement separately said its Entry-Level Professional Certificate portfolio had passed 20 million cumulative enrollments, with its enrollment rate up 32% year over year.
What Coursera’s enrollment figures show
The clearest takeaway is that both GenAI learning and career-oriented certificates remained active areas of activity on Coursera. The figures are company-reported platform metrics, not a measure of all online learning or proof that enrollment alone produces better employment outcomes.

The annual Professional Certificate figure and the Entry-Level Professional Certificate portfolio total are not interchangeable: one is a count for 2025, while the other is a cumulative portfolio measure reported in 2026. Coursera also reported more than 15.4 million enrollments in that entry-level portfolio in its June 2025 Global Skills Report announcement, but the publications describe figures at different times and do not provide a fully comparable series. Why Coursera’s GenAI counts differ
Coursera’s publications give two GenAI enrollment snapshots that should not be combined into a single trend line. Its June 2025 Global Skills Report announcement said GenAI enrollments had grown 195% year over year, exceeded 8 million cumulatively, and averaged 12 enrollments per minute in 2025 across nearly 700 courses. The later Form 10-K reported 5.0 million GenAI enrollments during calendar year 2025 and a pace of 15 per minute, versus 8 per minute in 2024. The sources do not reconcile the difference between the cumulative total in the June announcement and the annual total in the filing.

For context, Coursera’s January 2026 Job Skills Report announcement reported 14 GenAI enrollments per minute in its report context, based on nearly six million professionally motivated enterprise learners and more than 7,000 institutional customers. That is a defined enterprise-learning cohort, not a platform-wide rate. Later figures also need a platform distinction: the Q2 2026 shareholder letter said learners across Coursera and Udemy together enrolled in GenAI content at more than 45 per minute year to date, up from 25 per minute in 2025 under a unified methodology. What the micro-credentials survey says—and what it does not
Coursera’s June 2026 Micro-Credentials Impact Report announcement described a global survey of more than 3,500 learners, employers, and higher education leaders. In the announcement, 94% of surveyed employers said they were willing to offer higher starting salaries to graduates with micro-credentials, while 92% said entry-level hires with micro-credentials performed better in their first year.

These are survey responses reported by Coursera, not independently verified hiring or salary outcomes and not evidence that a credential caused a particular result. The same announcement said 82% of surveyed employers placed greater value on credentials developed with industry partners than on credentials developed solely by academic institutions. It also discussed reported differences between credit-bearing and non-credit credentials and employers’ preference for project- or industry-based assessment. These findings describe respondents’ views; they do not establish that every credential has equivalent quality or recognition.

What this means if you are choosing a course or certificate
Enrollment growth can help identify subjects learners are pursuing, but it cannot tell you whether a specific course fits your goals or whether an employer will value its credential. Compare the actual program with the role or skill you want, and look beyond the platform-wide trend.
- Check the learning outcome. Confirm that the course teaches the tools and skills you need, rather than relying on the broad label “AI” or “GenAI.”
- Inspect the assessment. Look for applied work, such as projects, that lets you demonstrate what you can do. Coursera’s 2026 announcement identifies applied-skills assessment as a distinction discussed in its survey.
- Verify recognition. Check whether the credential is developed with an industry partner, carries academic credit, or is recognized by employers in your field. These are distinctions reported in Coursera’s survey announcement, not a guarantee of acceptance.
- Treat a certificate as evidence of learning, not a job guarantee. The survey percentages describe employer responses; they do not predict an individual graduate’s salary, hiring prospects, or performance.
For GenAI skills, learning also includes evaluating the output of the tools. On Coursera’s Global Skills Report 2026 page, University of Michigan professor Josh Pasek says that recognizing AI output may sound more trustworthy than it is, and knowing how to check it, is now a core skill for people who rely on these tools. How to read the trend without overclaiming
- Use Coursera’s Form 10-K for its reported 2025 annual enrollment counts, and keep the June 2025 report announcement’s cumulative GenAI figure separate.
- Distinguish annual enrollments from cumulative portfolio totals and enrollment rates.
- Attribute survey findings to Coursera and describe them as respondents’ views, not proven labor-market effects.
- Do not describe combined Coursera-Udemy activity as Coursera-only demand.
