Gaming consoles were later mentioned in reporting about a possible broader tariff, but that was a proposal under consideration—not a final rule. What tariff is in effect, and what does it cover?
On January 14, 2026, the White House issued a semiconductor proclamation under Section 232. It established a 25% ad valorem duty, effective January 15, on a narrowly defined set of advanced computing chips and certain derivative products. The proclamation does not impose a general 25% tariff on electronics, gaming PCs, or consoles. Its scope and exceptions are set out in the operative White House proclamation.
The proclamation also excludes covered products imported for non-data-center consumer applications, among other enumerated uses. Whether a particular import qualifies depends on the product and applicable terms; the fact that it contains a chip does not by itself establish that the 25% duty applies.
What is being considered for consoles and other devices?
On August 27, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported, citing Politico and unnamed sources, that the administration was considering a second round of semiconductor tariffs. The reported approach could extend duties beyond chips to products containing chips, including gaming consoles, and existing exemptions might not carry over. The same report said the framework could still change substantially. It did not describe an enacted rule.

President Donald J. Trump’s January proclamation said: “Depending on the status or resolution of such negotiations, I may consider imposing significant tariffs on imports of semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and their derivative products, as well as an accompanying tariff offset program to incentivize domestic manufacturing.” That language anticipates possible future action; it does not confirm a later tariff on gaming devices.
Would gaming PCs be covered?
The report discussing a possible expansion named laptops, gaming consoles, and data-center servers as examples, but did not specifically establish that finished gaming desktop PCs would be covered. Nor does the presence of a chip inside a finished computer determine the tariff treatment of the whole device. Separately imported components may be classified and treated differently from an assembled PC.

Customs treatment is tied to product classification and applicable implementation rules, not just a retail label such as “gaming PC” or “console.” The USITC announced publication of 2026 HTS Revision 20 on September 28, 2026. Check the current USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule portal and the applicable official implementation documents for a specific product. The USTR presidential tariff actions page links to actions and related materials; consult the operative action rather than relying on a headline or an older summary.

There is no supported number for how much a gaming PC or console would cost under the reported proposal. The report gives no final tariff rate, effective date, product schedule, or device-level price estimate. Even if a future rule covered a particular product, its effect on a retail price would depend on details such as classification, country of origin, exemptions, and how import costs are passed through. The available information does not settle those questions.

The January proclamation states that the United States fully manufactures approximately 10% of the chips it requires and consumes roughly one quarter of the world’s semiconductors. Those figures explain the administration’s stated supply rationale; they are not a forecast of gaming-hardware prices.
