That made video and side-by-side tasks natural fits, though it did not make the design universally better. Similar wide devices are now appearing in market coverage, but the available evidence does not show that Google caused or directly influenced their designs.
What made the original Pixel Fold different?
Google introduced Pixel Fold as its first foldable phone on May 10, 2023. Product Manager George Hwang described it as a phone that “unfolds into a compact tablet.” Its proportions made that description more than a screen-size claim: the inner display was wider and less tall than the portrait-oriented screens many people associate with book-style foldables.
Google’s 2023 specification sheet lists these dimensions and aspect ratios:

The folded phone measured 5.5 × 3.1 × 0.5 inches; unfolded, it measured 5.5 × 6.2 × 0.2 inches, according to Google’s Pixel Fold specification sheet. Those figures describe a particular device, not a general standard for wide foldables.

How does a wider inner screen change the experience?
Video and games
A landscape-leaning screen can feel more immediately suited to widescreen video and games than a taller, narrower unfolded display. Google highlighted watching shows and playing games among the Pixel Fold’s intended uses. Actual results depend on the app and video aspect ratio: content may still show unused screen space, so a wide panel does not guarantee that every video fills the display.
Reading and multitasking
The extra horizontal room can also help when reading or placing two compatible apps side by side. Google promoted split-screen multitasking on Pixel Fold, but that is manufacturer-described functionality, not evidence that every app makes equally good use of the layout. The trade-off is that some portrait-oriented tasks and apps may feel less naturally framed on a broad screen.

Using the phone while folded
The inner screen is only half the form-factor decision. A foldable also has to work as a closed phone, where cover-screen width and height affect typing and one-handed reach. Chrome Unboxed’s Robby Payne described the Pixel Fold as short and wide and noted that some users found its cover screen stubby. That is an editorial judgment, not a measured assessment of all users’ comfort.
Was the Pixel Fold ahead of its time?
As a design example, yes: Google shipped a foldable with a distinctly wide inner display in 2023, before “wide” became a prominent label in later coverage. As a proven origin point for a wider industry trend, no. The available reporting does not establish that other manufacturers copied Google, responded to the Pixel Fold, or began their designs because of it.

By April 13, 2026, Android Central reported that Huawei’s Pura X Max was official, with preorders in China, and described its global availability as unclear. The same report gave the phone a 7.69-inch inner screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio, citing information ahead of Huawei’s April 20 launch event. Treat those screen details as a dated report, not as a substitute for a manufacturer specification. Android Central characterized possible wide foldables from Apple and Samsung as rumors at that time, not confirmed products or launches.
The comparison shows that “wide” need not mean one exact shape: the Pixel Fold’s 6:5 panel and the reported Pura X Max 16:10 panel are both broader than a tall portrait layout, but they are not identical. Other book-style designs may favor a squarer or taller unfolded screen instead. Each proportion allocates the available area differently among video, side-by-side apps, portrait content, and cover-screen usability.

Why screen shape was not the whole Pixel Fold story
Payne’s April 15, 2026 Chrome Unboxed article praised the landscape-opening design for video and games, while also criticizing the phone’s weight, chunky bezels, hinge that did not open fully, and older Tensor processor. Those are the author’s reported experience and evaluation, not controlled test results. They matter because a screen ratio cannot by itself determine whether a foldable is comfortable, durable, fast, or pleasant to use.
Google’s 2023 launch post called its custom hinge “the most durable hinge out there.” That is promotional manufacturer language, not an independent durability finding. The original Pixel Fold is best understood as an early, concrete example of the wide-foldable approach—not proof that the approach is superior or that it set later makers’ plans in motion.
