It could challenge ARC Raiders, but there is not enough evidence to say it will dethrone it. Modern Warfare 4 (MW4) is still unreleased as of October 7, 2026, and the available coverage is based on previews and developer briefings—not hands-on comparisons of the finished games. Those reports describe a more ambitious return for DMZ, with missions, progression, shifting operations, and environmental hazards. Whether that design becomes the best extraction shooter of all time will depend on how it plays after launch.
What MW4’s DMZ is reported to offer
DMZ is planned as an extraction mode set in the Hajin exclusion zone after the campaign. In a preview based on a developer presentation and interviews, Destructoid describes deployments with other players, AI combatants, convoys, air activity, and proximity chat. The report also mentions stealth that may help players avoid detection, threats that escalate with player activity, and weather that can worsen during a match. These are planned features reported before release, not verified launch behavior. Destructoid’s MW4 DMZ preview details the reported mechanics.
According to the same preview, dying can cost gear, while an M.I.A. system may let players recover a lost operator by spending in-game currency. That combination could make each deployment feel consequential while giving players a route back from failure; how forgiving or punishing it is will depend on the final rules and costs.
Three planned ways to deploy
- Story Missions: Curated narrative objectives, described as continuing the campaign’s story and receiving seasonal updates.
- Dynamic Operations: Objectives whose steps can vary, offering the potential for different runs without changing the overall goal.
- Free Roam: A less directed option for scavenging, hunting targets, or pursuing other players.
GamesBeat’s account of the developer briefing connects the mode’s fiction to abandoned military technology in Hajin: players are sent to secure, capture, or neutralize it. Infinity Ward multiplayer creative director Geoff Smith characterized the team’s ambition this way: “It’s really more than just a third mode. It’s a full-featured game inside Modern Warfare.” That is a description of intent, not an independent assessment of the finished experience. GamesBeat’s report on the briefing covers the premise and the studio’s stated scope.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Progression and social risk
The previewed feature set also includes an operating base, rank, operator Traits, crafting, a 3D printer, a stash, and PvP bounties. The bounty system is intended, in part, to discourage aggressive hunting of other players, but its effectiveness has not been established. GamingTrend’s interview with multiplayer creative director Joe Cecot provides context: he said the previous DMZ left desired persistence and deeper systems unrealized, and that this version puts more emphasis on purposeful looting and curated story missions. GamingTrend’s interview with Cecot discusses those design aims.
What would determine whether it surpasses ARC Raiders
The reported feature list makes DMZ a plausible challenger, but a richer menu of systems does not by itself make a better extraction shooter. A fair comparison needs to establish whether those systems produce compelling decisions during repeated deployments. Current reporting does not provide a reliable, direct evaluation of MW4 DMZ against ARC Raiders.

| What to compare | What launch coverage needs to establish |
|---|---|
| Progression and persistence | Whether gear and operator development feel valuable over time, what a failed deployment removes, and how the M.I.A. recovery system works in practice. |
| Mission variety and narrative | Whether curated story missions and randomized operation steps create meaningfully different runs, rather than repetition with cosmetic changes. |
| PvE and PvP balance | How AI escalation, other squads, stealth, and bounties interact—and whether players can make deliberate choices about taking or avoiding fights. |
| Map and environmental play | Whether Hajin’s regions, exploration, traversal, and changing weather shape memorable tactical decisions rather than serving mainly as spectacle. |
| Moment-to-moment play and accessibility | How gunplay, onboarding, performance, and solo versus squad play compare. The available previews do not establish these points. |
Why the verdict has to wait
MW4’s reported October 23, 2026 release date is still in the future as of October 7, 2026, so there is no post-launch basis here for declaring DMZ the winner. Destructoid says its preview was not based on playing the newest version, while the other coverage describes developer plans and briefings. PC Gamer’s report on DMZ’s return and announced timing likewise places the mode in a pre-release context.
That uncertainty cuts both ways: the announced systems could make DMZ deeper and more varied than its predecessor, but feature breadth cannot establish how well they work together. Nor do the cited reports show that ARC Raiders is losing players, less enjoyable, or otherwise in decline. A claim that MW4 has already killed or surpassed it would go beyond the evidence.

What players should watch after launch
Once MW4 is available, compare the games through repeated play rather than a feature checklist. Useful questions include whether a failed run feels costly but recoverable, whether missions stay engaging after the story is familiar, and whether changing weather or escalating AI meaningfully alter decisions. Players should also look at performance, onboarding, and how the experience differs between solo deployments and squads—areas the preview reporting does not settle.
Those answers will show whether MW4 DMZ is a strong alternative, a genuine rival, or the new standard. For now, the evidence supports the possibility of a serious challenge to ARC Raiders, not a verdict that it has been dethroned.
