Not today. Humans cannot regrow a complete arm or leg after amputation. People can repair some tissues, and the very tips of some fingers may partially regrow under specific conditions, but neither is the same as rebuilding a functional limb. Whether future science will make that possible remains unknown.
What counts as regrowing a limb?
Healing can replace or repair individual tissues: skin closes over a wound, and a fractured bone can knit. Regrowing an arm or leg would require rebuilding a coordinated structure—bones and joints, muscles, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, and skin—in the right arrangement and reconnecting it so it functions. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) states that humans cannot regenerate limbs (NIGMS, “Regeneration,” updated February 13, 2025).
That distinction matters because visible tissue growth alone is not proof of whole-limb regeneration. The relevant test is whether the complete structure and its coordinated function return.
Why salamanders can regrow limbs when people cannot
After a salamander loses a limb, cells at the injury site can form a blastema: a growing population of cells that helps rebuild multiple tissues. Humans and most other mammals do not naturally form this structure after limb loss. Researchers still study how blastemas form and how cells are directed to make the right tissues; a mechanism found in an animal does not by itself amount to a human treatment (NIGMS; Min and Whited, 2023 review).

- 2/3 Life-Size & Detailed Muscle Structure: Crafted to 2/3 human size, this arm model showcases precise muscle fibers, tendons, and nerve/vessel pathways—ideal for studying arm anatomy without the bulk of full-size models.
- 7-Piece Detachable Design: Splits into 7 numbered components, allowing targeted examination of individual muscle groups (e.g., biceps, triceps) and their attachments. The numbering simplifies identification for beginners.
- Numbered Labeling for Easy Learning: Each detachable part is marked with numbers, pairing with the included resources to quickly match muscles to their names—perfect for self-study or classroom quizzes.
- Included Educational Poster: Comes with a detailed poster that maps numbered labels to muscle names and functions, serving as a handy reference for lessons, study sessions, or display.
- Sturdy Base for Stable Display: Features a solid wooden base with support stands to keep the arm model upright, ensuring easy access during demonstrations or long-term study setups.
Can human fingertips grow back?
Sometimes, the very tip of a human digit can partially regrow under particular conditions. This is a limited response, not the regrowth of an entire finger from its base, and certainly not an arm or leg. Reviews of digit-tip regeneration describe it as a useful model for studying complex repair; mouse studies may offer clues about mammalian regeneration, but they are not evidence of an established human limb therapy (Johnson and Lehoczky, 2022; “Regeneration and repair of human digits and limbs: fact and fiction,” 2016).
What limb-regeneration research can promise—and what it cannot
The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) describes human limb regeneration as an aspirational goal and emphasizes basic research using animal models. Its nearer-term research questions include healing wounds without scars and restoring muscle after injury or amputation. That work may improve understanding of repair, but it does not establish that a complete human limb can be regrown or that a clinical method is imminent (NICHD, “Opportunities for Advancing Limb Regeneration Research,” reviewed September 16, 2022).

The sources cited here do not establish a clinical procedure, drug, stem-cell intervention, supplement, or consumer device that regrows an entire human arm or leg. Prosthetics and rehabilitation can help restore mobility and function, but they are not biological regrowth; transplantation is also distinct from regeneration.
Will people ever be able to regrow a limb?
There is no reliable timeline or settled answer. Current findings support a firm conclusion about the present—humans cannot regrow a complete limb—and an open conclusion about the future. A promising result in a salamander or mouse is a starting point for research, not proof that the same process can be safely and reliably induced in people. The meaningful near-term question is whether knowledge of animal regeneration and mammalian digit tips can improve human tissue repair.

Why this matters to people living with limb loss
NICHD’s page, reviewed in 2022, reports that about 1 in every 1,900 babies in the United States is born with a limb defect each year and that an additional 1.6 million people incur limb injury and/or amputation. The page does not identify the underlying statistical source in its displayed text, so these figures should be understood as NICHD’s reported estimates rather than independently validated counts (NICHD).
