Potentially. A sufficiently deep, stable tube could shield a habitat from some radiation and micrometeorites while moderating the Moon’s severe surface temperature swings. But lunar pits are only candidate entrances: no source cited here establishes a cave as a crew-ready shelter. Safe access, structural stability, usable space, power, communications and conditions at the intended habitat site would all need to be checked.
What is known about lunar pits and lava tubes?
A lunar pit is an observed opening or depression in the surface. Some pits have overhangs consistent with entrances to underground voids, and some may lead into lava tubes. A pit is not automatically proof of a long, accessible tube: the underground space could be limited or have a different shape than expected.
NASA reported more than 200 known lunar pits in a 2014 account, but that is a dated count, not a current exhaustive inventory. In a 2022 NASA report, researcher Tyler Horvath estimated that about 16 of those pits were probably collapsed lava tubes. The qualification matters: these are probable examples, not confirmed, mapped routes suitable for crews. NASA’s account of lunar pit observations
There is more specific evidence beneath the Mare Tranquillitatis pit. ESA’s 2024 account describes radar evidence for an accessible conduit below it and calls the location promising. That is a reason to investigate, not proof of the full passage dimensions, stability or suitability for a habitat. ESA’s account of the Mare Tranquillitatis finding

How could a lava tube protect astronauts?
Potential shielding from radiation and impacts
Rock above an underground habitat could reduce exposure to solar and cosmic radiation and protect against small surface impacts. The amount of protection would depend on the roof’s thickness and shape, the habitat’s position, and other site conditions. A NASA-indexed 2002 analysis modeled galactic cosmic rays and solar particle events interacting with lunar rock and regolith; it is a model-based assessment, not a dose measurement inside a visited cave. No astronaut exposure measurements inside a lunar lava tube are reported in the sources cited here. NASA Technical Reports Server: Lunar lava tube radiation safety analysis
In 2014, NASA quoted study author Robert Wagner describing a habitat placed several dozen metres back beneath an overhang as a potentially very safe location. That was an expert assessment of a possible placement, not a verified result for a particular site. A cave should not be described as eliminating radiation or guaranteeing safety.

A more stable temperature environment
Temperature is another possible advantage. NASA reported an estimate of around 17 °C in the permanently shadowed region of the Mare Tranquillitatis pit, with slight modeled variation. For comparison, the same 2022 report gave lunar surface extremes near 127 °C by day and −173 °C at night. The 17 °C figure applies to a particular region of that pit; conditions in a connected cave are inferred if the passage continues from the opening, rather than directly measured throughout a tube. NASA’s report on LRO temperature findings
What are the main risks of using a lunar cave?
| Issue | Potential benefit | Risk or unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Radiation and impacts | Overlying rock could reduce some exposure and block small surface impacts. | Shielding depends on roof thickness, geometry and habitat position; no cited source gives a measured crew-dose reduction for an actual cave. |
| Temperature | A pit or cave may be more thermally stable than the exposed surface. | The reported 17 °C estimate concerns one shadowed pit region; conditions at other sites and deeper inside require measurement. |
| Entry and exit | A skylight may provide access to underground space. | Steep walls, unstable rims, loose rubble or unknown passages could make descent and evacuation hazardous. |
| Structure and room | A large, stable tube could provide space for a protected habitat. | Passage dimensions, roof and floor condition, rubble and mechanically usable volume must be established. |
| Operations | Rock cover could reduce some environmental exposure. | Underground crews would need power and reliable communications, as well as local environmental measurements. |
These uncertainties affect one another. A promising entrance is not enough: a habitat needs a safe route in and out, sound ground for operations, sufficient space and support systems that work underground.

What would it take to make one usable?
ESA mission studies describe exploration steps rather than a completed lunar cave mission. The work would begin with reconnaissance and proceed toward robotic mapping and engineering assessment:
- Survey the rim. Identify a candidate pit and assess where a lander, rover or other system could operate safely near its edge.
- Choose and establish access. Determine whether a robot can descend without encountering unstable walls or blocking the route needed for later operations.
- Map the underground space. Use probes or rovers to examine passage geometry, rubble, floor and roof conditions, and the volume that could actually be used.
- Measure the local environment. Assess radiation and temperature where a habitat might sit instead of assuming that readings at the opening describe the whole cave.
- Plan power and communications. Account for the lack of direct sunlight underground and the need to keep systems powered and in contact with operators.
ESA’s mission descriptions treat energy needs, the route to the rim, and power and data budgets for descent and mapping as design questions. These are proposed studies and technologies, not evidence that astronauts have already explored or occupied a lunar tube. What would need to be confirmed before crews could rely on one?
- The tube’s full dimensions, passage shape and accessible volume.
- Whether the roof, rim and floor can withstand robotic work and repeated crew operations.
- Radiation and temperature at the intended habitat location.
- A safe descent route, a workable evacuation plan, and dependable power and communications underground.
ESA’s 2024 discussion and mission studies describe candidate exploration and unresolved engineering questions; they do not certify a crew-qualified site. A September 2026 arXiv preprint on LunarLeaper likewise concerns exploration concepts, not proof that a specific cave is ready for human occupation. Lava Tube Exploration with LunarLeaper
