BlackRock argues that AI agents could create demand for programmable payment infrastructure as they pay for API calls, data and computing. Its October 5, 2026 paper, The Machine-Native Economy: AI and Digital Assets, expects stablecoins—not a particular volatile cryptocurrency—to lead any agentic transactional use. But BlackRock also says agent payments and compute-market liquidity remain limited: the paper describes a potential opportunity, not proof that AI agents already account for significant crypto demand.
What is BlackRock’s argument about AI agents and crypto?
BlackRock connects two systems designed to be processed by machines: AI models work with information represented as numerical tokens, while blockchains can represent value or entitlements as digital tokens that can be verified, transferred and settled programmatically. The paper calls these “machine-native intelligence” and “machine-native money.”
The practical case is that increasingly capable agents can plan and carry out multistep tasks, potentially making small payments along the way without a person approving every transaction. An agent might pay for an API call, on-demand data or a portion of computing capacity. BlackRock argues that blockchain rails may suit high-frequency, sub-cent machine-to-machine payments.
This is a forecast about what infrastructure agents might use, not evidence that they are already generating material crypto demand. BlackRock does not quantify the share of crypto transactions attributable to agents or identify a network or token that captures the most value.

How might AI agents use stablecoins?
Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a relatively stable value, often by referencing a currency such as the U.S. dollar. BlackRock expects them to lead transactional use by AI agents because a more predictable unit of account makes it easier to price services and settle payments than a volatile asset would.
The paper also notes that more activity on permissionless blockchains could raise demand for blockspace, validator services and transaction fees. Whether a given network captures meaningful value from that activity depends on how it is designed. BlackRock does not name a winning network or establish that any one token will benefit most.

As an example of the emerging infrastructure, the paper points to x402, an open payments protocol developed by Coinbase that uses HTTP 402 (“Payment Required”) to facilitate machine-initiated payments. BlackRock also mentions adaptations of traditional payment rails. These are examples of possible transaction layers, not proof that a particular protocol or provider has achieved broad adoption.
What do the stablecoin market figures show—and what don’t they show?
BlackRock reports that stablecoin circulating market capitalization exceeded $300 billion as of September 2026, and that adjusted stablecoin transaction volume exceeded $11 trillion in 2025. It says the latter was in the same broad range as Visa’s and Mastercard’s annual payment volumes.

Those figures describe stablecoins overall, not payments made by AI agents. They show that stablecoins already have substantial market activity, but they do not establish how much—if any—of that activity comes from autonomous agents.
Why does BlackRock discuss computing capacity as a digital asset?
AI training and inference require computing power and energy. BlackRock argues that as compute becomes a larger economic input, businesses may need ways to price capacity, finance it and manage risks to its cost or availability.

One possibility is a standardized contract representing a claim on processing resources or usage rights. In theory, products such as exchange-traded compute futures could help establish prices and let businesses hedge costs or supply risks. BlackRock presents this as a concept that could develop, not as an established, liquid market.
Turning compute into a comparable contract would be difficult. The value of capacity depends on factors including hardware and chip productivity, regional energy economics and how contracts are settled. BlackRock says these design challenges remain.

Where do traditional payment systems fit?
BlackRock does not argue that every agent payment must use a blockchain. It says blockchain rails may be particularly suited to small, frequent machine-to-machine payments, while traditional payment systems remain important when a business or consumer is involved—for example, in business-to-machine or consumer-to-machine transactions.
The choice of rail depends on the task. Relevant considerations include whether payments can be automated, whether the system supports very small and frequent charges, how predictable pricing is, and what authorization and settlement steps are required. The paper’s broad comparison is not a claim that every traditional provider handles every transaction in the same way.
What has—and hasn’t—been established?
- BlackRock’s thesis: AI agents could create demand for programmable payments as they purchase digital services and computing resources.
- Likely transactional asset, in BlackRock’s view: Stablecoins, because their more predictable pricing can suit payments better than a volatile cryptocurrency.
- Potential adjacent market: Standardized claims on compute capacity, if contracts and settlement mechanisms mature.
- Important limit: BlackRock says agentic payment activity and compute-market liquidity remain limited. The paper does not demonstrate material agent-driven crypto demand, provide a measured agent-payment share, or identify which network or token would capture the most value.
BlackRock’s own conclusion is that “The ecosystem remains nascent, with agentic payment activity and compute-market liquidity still limited.” The paper is best read as a prospective infrastructure argument—not proof of realized demand or an investment recommendation.
