Yes—some planets can survive their star’s transformation into a white dwarf. The odds depend on where a planet is during the star’s red-giant expansion and how the system changes afterward. A distant planet may remain intact, while a close one can be engulfed; even a survivor may later move to a very different orbit.
What happens to a planet when its star becomes a white dwarf?
A Sun-like star eventually runs low on core hydrogen, expands into a red giant, sheds its outer layers, and leaves behind a hot, compact white dwarf. The expanded star can engulf nearby planets. Farther-out planets may avoid the star’s envelope, but surviving does not guarantee that their orbits stay fixed.
As the star loses mass, the system’s gravitational balance changes. Interactions with other planets or smaller bodies can also alter orbits. Some objects may be redirected toward the white dwarf, where strong tidal forces can tear them apart. The resulting debris can then fall onto the star. An intact planet and signs of planetary destruction can therefore exist in the same system.
What observations show that planets can survive?
Three NASA-reported systems illustrate different outcomes: a planet inferred to orbit at a wider distance, a planet now extremely close to its white dwarf with a proposed history of late inward migration, and a white dwarf accreting material from disrupted smaller bodies. These are not interchangeable kinds of evidence.

MOA-2010-BLG-477Lb: a wider-orbit survivor
A NASA Technical Reports Server record describes microlensing observations and near-infrared follow-up that did not detect a main-sequence lens star. The authors infer a white dwarf with a mass of 0.53 ± 0.11 times the Sun’s and a planet with a mass of 1.4 ± 0.3 times Jupiter’s. The measured projected separation is 2.8 ± 0.5 astronomical units; the system’s semimajor axis is inferred to be larger. The authors present the system as evidence that a planet can survive its host’s red-giant and asymptotic giant phases. WD 1856 b: close now, but likely not close at first
NASA reported in July 2026 that WD 1856 b, around the white dwarf WD 1856+534 about 80 light-years away, completes an orbit every 34 hours at a separation under 2 million miles (3 million kilometers). Its reported mass range is four to eleven Jupiter masses, and its temperature is about 260°F (126°C). Webb transmission observations found signatures of small cloud particles and hydrocarbons, most likely methane. NASA says a planet at WD 1856 b’s current distance would have been destroyed during the red-giant phase. The team interprets the planet’s unexpectedly high temperature as residual heat from inward migration. The proposed timing places that migration 3 to 5.5 billion years after the white dwarf formed, supporting a scenario in which the planet initially stayed on a wider, safer orbit. This is a proposed explanation for this system, not a general rule for white-dwarf planets.
G238-44: evidence of disrupted material, not a surviving planet
NASA’s report on G238-44 describes atmospheric elements interpreted as material from both rocky-metallic and icy bodies. The proposed explanation is that chaotic dynamics after the star left its main-sequence phase scattered smaller objects inward, where tides disrupted them. NASA reports that the white dwarf began capturing material from asteroid-belt-like and Kuiper-belt-like regions within 100 million years after its white-dwarf phase began. That finding concerns accreted debris; it does not establish the fate of every planet in the system. Could Earth or the outer planets survive the Sun’s transformation?
NASA says Mercury, Venus, and possibly Earth may be destroyed as the Sun expands. The exact outcome for Earth is not settled in the cited account. The fate of the outer planets—especially the gas giants—is also unclear. Their survival cannot be inferred simply from evidence that a planet has survived around another white dwarf: each system has its own starting orbits and subsequent dynamics. A white dwarf’s atmosphere can contain elements from material that fell onto it. By studying those elements, astronomers can infer whether the accreted bodies included rocky or volatile-rich material. At G238-44, the reported combination points to both rocky-metallic and icy parent bodies. Such chemical evidence can reveal the kinds of small bodies in a system, but it is not the same as directly observing an intact planet. NASA Science: “Chapter 7: Death and New Life”.

NASA’s educational chapter also notes that Spitzer confirmed about 40 white dwarfs with hot dusty disks. That figure is background reported on the chapter page, not a current census of all white dwarfs or intact surviving planets.
