A 2016 materials study did not make a phone or other device that lasts three months on a charge. It engineered an atomically layered material with coupled electrical and magnetic properties, a result that researchers said might eventually help enable lower-energy computing. The three-month charge interval was a later speculation, not a measured outcome.
What did the researchers actually make?
The team built superlattices from two compounds, LuFeO3 and LuFe2O4, introducing individual FeO monolayers during growth. The goal was to engineer a multiferroic material in which electrical and magnetic behavior are coupled. The 2016 Nature paper reports that these properties can occur near room temperature in the designed material.
For the (LuFeO3)9/(LuFe2O4)1 superlattice, the researchers reported a magnetic transition temperature of 281 K, compared with 240 K for LuFe2O4. They also demonstrated electric-field control of magnetism at 200 K. These are measured properties of the material under study, not battery-life figures or everyday operating temperatures.
What is a magnetoelectric multiferroic?
A multiferroic material has more than one ordered property, such as electrical polarization and magnetic order. In a magnetoelectric multiferroic, those properties are coupled: changing the electrical state can affect magnetic behavior, or vice versa. That coupling is scientifically useful because it suggests a way to control magnetic information with an electric field.

University of Michigan materials scientist John Heron described the significance of the work this way: “Before this work, there was only one other room-temperature multiferroic whose magnetic properties could be controlled by electricity.” The study’s advance was a materials-design approach, not a finished computing component.
Does the material mean a phone could last three months?
No such phone was tested. The paper reports neither a processor nor a battery, and it does not measure how long any device can run between charges. The exact “charge once every three months” idea appeared in a 2017 Futurism article as a possible implication of future energy savings.

The University of Michigan’s 2016 announcement estimated that future devices based on the research might use 100 times less energy. That figure is a projection, not an observed reduction in a commercial processor or a battery-life test. Even if a material helps reduce energy use in some future component, translating that into longer device runtime would depend on how the component is used and on the rest of the device’s power demands.

Using an electric field to control magnetic behavior could offer a path toward more energy-efficient ways to store or process information. The work establishes a promising materials behavior that researchers could investigate for such applications. It does not establish a practical memory technology, a low-power processor, or a consumer product.

The gap between a material result and a device is substantial: engineers would need to integrate the material into working components and systems, then measure their performance and energy use. The 2016 paper and university announcement do not report those steps or demonstrate a three-month charging interval. They also do not establish whether a product using the material is available today.
