Yes—Windows 10 version 2004 included Cortana, but the experience was changing. During 20H1 development, Microsoft previewed a redesigned, chat-based Cortana app for Insiders. Version 2004 also had documented wake-word support on sufficiently updated builds. That is historical context: Microsoft retired Cortana as a standalone Windows voice assistant in spring 2023, and Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
What Cortana was like during Windows 10 20H1
During 20H1 Insider development, Microsoft introduced a US beta of a redesigned Cortana app. Microsoft described it as a “brand-new chat-based UI” where users could “type or speak natural language queries.” The interface supported light and dark themes and was intended to feel more like a conversation than the older assistant experience. This describes the Insider preview, not a guarantee that every feature or language would be available in every final installation.
Microsoft’s preview archive listed these functions for the new app:
- Answers from Bing and assistant-style conversations.
- Opening apps.
- Creating lists and reminders.
- Setting alarms and timers.
Microsoft also cautioned that some features from the older Cortana experience were not yet included in the beta. The preview initially supported US English; Microsoft said other languages could be added through app updates rather than waiting for a Windows feature update. Did Windows 10 version 2004 have Cortana?
Yes. Windows 10 version 2004, also known as 20H1, included Cortana, and Microsoft documented wake-word use for the release. For that capability, Microsoft’s configuration guidance specifies Windows 10 version 2004 with OS build 19041.329 or later. The threshold is a build requirement from 2020, not evidence that Cortana remains available today.
On June 9, 2020, Microsoft separately recorded an improvement to Cortana voice-activation reliability on supported devices with low-power keyword detection. That note concerns a particular device capability; it does not mean every PC could listen for a wake word. How to turn on “Hey Cortana” in Windows 10
For a PC running version 2004, Microsoft’s documented threshold for wake-word use was build 19041.329 or later. The available documentation establishes that requirement but does not provide a verified, current step-by-step Windows 10 menu path for enabling the wake word. More importantly, Cortana is no longer a standalone Windows voice assistant, so these old configuration details should not be treated as instructions for restoring the service today.
What happened to Cortana in Windows 10?
Microsoft says it retired Cortana as a standalone Windows voice assistant in spring 2023. Cortana-related features in other products ended on separate schedules: Microsoft lists retirements in mobile and Teams in fall 2023, then Outlook mobile voice search and Play My Emails in June 2024. Version 2004 support ended before Windows 10 support did
Windows 10 Home and Pro version 2004 began on May 27, 2020. Microsoft’s end-of-servicing announcement gives December 14, 2021 as the end date, while Microsoft’s Home and Pro lifecycle table lists December 15, 2021 and says its dates are shown in Pacific Time. These are the dates reported by two different Microsoft sources; the one-day discrepancy should not be silently collapsed into a single date. That release-specific servicing end came well before Windows 10’s overall end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft’s current guidance identifies three possible next steps, depending on the device and user’s circumstances:

- Upgrade the existing PC to Windows 11 if it meets the requirements.
- Move to an eligible Windows 10 release and consider consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU). The cited ESU documentation requires Windows 10 version 22H2, so version 2004 itself is not eligible. ESU provides critical and important security updates, not feature updates or general support.
- Consider a new Windows 11 PC if the current device cannot upgrade and replacing it is suitable.
