The COROS PACE 4 Pro is a credible, lower-priced alternative to the Garmin Forerunner 970, not a universal replacement. Its launch pricing, large bright AMOLED screen and strong battery claims make it appealing to runners who want core training tools and mapping without paying as much. Garmin remains the stronger choice if you value deeper training analysis, more capable maps, readiness guidance, payments or a built-in flashlight.

How the PACE 4 Pro and Forerunner 970 compare

At launch on September 22, 2026, COROS priced the PACE 4 Pro at $449 in the U.S. and £389 in the U.K. Tom’s Guide listed the Forerunner 970 at $749 and £629 in its comparison. Those are launch/comparison prices, not a guarantee of current retail pricing; check local listings before buying. Garmin’s linked product page is for Singapore, so its local availability and pricing should not be treated as U.S. or U.K. figures.

The PACE 4 Pro’s screen is larger on the stated specifications, and Tom’s Guide describes it as thinner and lighter than the Garmin in its comparison. The weight figures need care: COROS’s own overview gives three different PACE 4 Pro numbers depending on where you look, while Tom’s Guide lists 51 g. The available figures do not establish whether the discrepancy reflects body-only versus strap-included measurements or a page inconsistency, so they are not a reliable basis for a precise weight-to-weight conclusion. Wrist fit and comfort are personal; try the watch on if those are decisive.

Battery life depends on the GPS mode and settings

COROS’s purchase page states up to 60 hours in HIGH GPS mode, which uses single-frequency GPS, and 45 hours in MAX GPS mode, which uses dual-frequency GPS. It also claims up to 21 days of daily use. These are manufacturer figures for different operating conditions, not interchangeable promises: COROS says music, backlight, navigation and other settings affect actual battery life. Tom’s Guide’s comparison separately lists 30 hours for multi-band GPS. The figures should not be compared as if they were measured under the same settings.

Tom’s Guide reviewer Nick Harris-Fry reports a separate real-use observation: more than seven days on the first charge with the always-on display enabled, daily outdoor runs in the most power-intensive mode, and real-time all-day heart-rate tracking. He says his Forerunner 970 lasted four to five days under the same stated use. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled battery test or a guarantee for other users.

Training tools and navigation: Garmin goes deeper

The PACE 4 Pro has core training features and maps, but Tom’s Guide judges Garmin’s training analysis more extensive and identifies a training readiness score as one of the Forerunner 970’s advantages. Garmin also offers PacePro, which creates a pace plan based on a selected distance and pace or finish time; when using a course, it can account for elevation changes to help plan effort. Course-based planning relies on a course and Garmin Connect.

Running and cycling accuracy: promising review impressions, with limits

Harris-Fry says he used multi-band GPS in the most accurate mode, compared wrist heart-rate readings with a chest strap, and examined GPS tracks during 11 days of daily running, along with cycling and strength workouts. He reports very few GPS errors and performance in line with top Garmin watches. During runs and bike rides, he found heart-rate readings generally close to the chest strap, though occasional short, incorrect spikes occurred. He saw more optical heart-rate errors during strength sessions.

Those are the reviewer’s hands-on observations, not laboratory results or a guarantee of accuracy for every person and activity. If you need more dependable heart-rate data for training, COROS lists Bluetooth support for compatible heart-rate monitors.

Smartwatch extras and accessories

Garmin has a clearer advantage if you want conveniences beyond training: its product page lists Garmin Pay and a built-in LED flashlight, alongside music storage, a speaker and microphone. The PACE 4 Pro also has music storage, a speaker and microphone in Tom’s Guide’s comparison, but the sources do not establish comparable payment or flashlight features for COROS.

COROS lists Bluetooth compatibility with heart-rate monitors, cycling power meters, cadence and speed sensors, and the COROS POD 2. Its purchase page also lists dedicated triathlon and duathlon modes and support for Strava, TrainingPeaks and major third-party training platforms. The USB-C charging cable is not included, according to COROS.

Which watch should you buy?

Choose the COROS PACE 4 Pro if

  • You want to spend less at the cited launch prices while still getting AMOLED, mapping, dual-frequency GPS and core training features.
  • You value COROS’s stated battery options and are willing to choose GPS and display settings with their effect on endurance in mind.
  • You already use compatible Bluetooth sensors or training platforms listed by COROS.

Choose the Garmin Forerunner 970 if

  • You will use Garmin’s more extensive training analysis, training readiness or course-based PacePro planning.
  • Better maps, Garmin Pay or the built-in flashlight matter enough to justify the difference between the cited launch/comparison prices.
  • You want Garmin’s listed multi-band GPS and established mix of training and smartwatch features in one watch.

The choice is about priorities, not a universal winner: for a runner focused on price, display and battery claims, the PACE 4 Pro is a serious alternative. For someone who will make regular use of Garmin’s extra analysis, mapping and everyday features, the Forerunner 970 may earn its higher cited launch price.
