Copy and paste move content through your device’s clipboard; your browser and the app receiving the paste help determine what appears. Use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V on many Windows and Linux setups, or Command+C and Command+V on macOS. The result may be plain text, formatted content, an image, or—in Microsoft Edge’s URL workflow—a linked page title.
What happens when you copy and paste on the web?
Copying places data on the system clipboard, a temporary store that can be used by another app or by a web page. The clipboard can hold an item in more than one format. A copied spreadsheet range, for example, might be available as an HTML table, plain text, an image, or a web-specific format. The destination chooses a representation it can accept, so pasting the same copied item into different apps can produce different results.
The W3C Clipboard API and events Working Draft, published 24 June 2026, identifies text/plain, text/html, and image/png as mandatory formats for relevant web clipboard operations. This is draft guidance, not a finished W3C Recommendation. See the W3C Clipboard API and events Working Draft.
How to copy and paste using keyboard shortcuts
- Copy: Select text or another item, then press Ctrl+C on Windows or Linux, or Command+C on macOS.
- Paste: Put focus in an editable destination—such as a text field, document, or message—and press Ctrl+V on Windows or Linux, or Command+V on macOS.
- Paste without formatting: Some apps offer a plain-text paste shortcut, often Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows or Linux. Availability and behavior depend on the browser and receiving app.
These are common shortcuts, not a guarantee that every keyboard, operating system, browser, or app behaves identically. Context menus may provide Copy and Paste options as alternatives.

A browser’s paste action inserts a suitable clipboard format when focus is in an editable context. In a non-editable area, it does not insert content, although a page’s paste event can still fire. The W3C draft also says a script-created, synthetic paste event must not expose the real system clipboard.
Why pasted content can look different
Clipboard data can include multiple representations. A destination that supports HTML may preserve headings, links, tables, or other formatting; another may accept only plain text. An image-capable destination may use an image representation instead. The application receiving the paste—not just the browser—affects which format is used and how it is displayed.

Microsoft Edge: paste a URL as a title or address
Microsoft documents a specific Edge behavior: after copying a URL from the address bar, Ctrl+V pastes a linked page title by default in compatible destinations, while Ctrl+Shift+V pastes the web address. Within Edge, the context menu also offers Paste as choices. These instructions apply to Edge’s documented URL workflow, not all browsers or operating systems. Read Microsoft’s instructions for copying and pasting a URL in Edge.
To change Edge’s URL formatting preference, open Settings > Appearance > Browser behavior and features > URL formatting, then choose Link for a hyperlinked title or Plain text for the address. Microsoft cautions that the destination app can override the enhanced behavior, and apps outside Edge may use their own paste handling. For more Edge shortcuts, see Microsoft’s keyboard shortcuts reference.

Clipboard access and safety
Web apps can respond to clipboard events and may use clipboard APIs, but access to read or write clipboard contents is governed by browser rules and permissions. The W3C Working Draft warns that clipboard data may contain personally identifying information such as names, addresses, or passwords, and says untrusted scripts should not receive uncontrolled access. Its privacy discussion is in the draft’s privacy considerations.
The same draft identifies ways clipboard manipulation can mislead users: substituting a different link for the one they meant to copy, putting a shell command or executable script on the clipboard, or hiding data in rich content. These are risks the specification describes, not a claim that every browser behaves insecurely. Before using an unexpected paste, inspect the content—especially links, commands, and richly formatted material. Never run a command you did not intend to copy.
