Neither copper nor fiber is the right choice for every data center connection. For a compatible short link within a rack, a passive direct-attach copper cable (DAC) can be a practical, low-cost option. Fiber is suited to longer reaches and can have a smaller cable diameter, but it requires compatible optical interfaces and careful handling. Choose based on the exact link’s data rate, reach, ports, total cost, power, routing density, and maintenance needs.

How copper and fiber differ

Copper and fiber are families of media, not single performance tiers. Ethernet PHYs define operation over different media, and the supported speeds and distances vary by PHY. For example, the IEEE overview describes 100 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s optical interfaces over single-mode fiber for reaches up to 10 km. That is a capability of the cited optical PHYs, not a universal comparison with every copper link. See the IEEE 802.3 overview and check the applicable PHY specification and standards version for a real design.

Passive DAC uses a copper twinax assembly between compatible ports, without separate optical conversion in the cable assembly. NVIDIA describes DAC as a low-cost choice for short links, mainly within a rack. Its HDR InfiniBand guide gives a maximum passive-copper cable length of 2 m and says the passive cable requires no port power. Those figures apply to that HDR example; they are not general limits for copper across protocols and products. NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD cabling guide states that “Due to their short reach, copper cables are mainly used within a rack,” referring to its InfiniBand cabling context.

Fiber supports longer reaches than the copper assemblies discussed in that NVIDIA guide and has a smaller diameter in that comparison. Optical transceivers and active optical cable assemblies add electronics; in NVIDIA’s cited HDR examples, optical modules require port power. Fiber also brings optical connectors and handling requirements: tight bends can degrade signal, so follow the cable’s specified bend radius and protect connectors from contamination.

Which medium fits the connection?

Choose passive DAC for a compatible short in-rack link

DAC is worth considering when the endpoints are close, their ports support the same cable type and data rate, and the required length falls within the product’s specification. Confirm the port form factor, protocol, data rate, cable length, and device-vendor compatibility before ordering. A passive cable’s lack of separate optical conversion does not make every DAC compatible with every port.

Choose fiber when the link needs more reach or tighter cable routing

Fiber is a candidate when the exact PHY’s supported reach exceeds the available copper option, or when its smaller diameter helps with rack or pathway density. Confirm the optical interface, fiber type, connector, transceiver, and reach are all supported at the target data rate. Longer reach is not automatic: it depends on the specific optical PHY and components.

Compare complete links, not just cable materials

Include all required components and operational needs in the decision. An optical link may need transceivers or an active optical assembly; a copper option may have different length, compatibility, or routing constraints. Consider port or module power, cable density, patch panels, installation labor, cleaning and inspection, and how easily the link can be serviced. The available sources do not establish a neutral, current, like-for-like cost or energy winner for equivalent links; those results depend on architecture and configuration.

What published figures do—and do not—tell you

Figure Scope and qualification
49 m average enterprise data-center link length; more than 90% of links shorter than 100 m Figures reported by Corning in its enterprise data-center discussion; publication year is not shown on the retrieved page. They describe that discussion, not every data center. Corning’s fiber-optic networking article
2 m maximum passive copper length for HDR NVIDIA’s HDR InfiniBand example; not a universal copper reach limit. Publication year is not shown in the retrieved guide. NVIDIA’s cabling guide
Up to 5 W port power for two cited HDR optical transceiver examples Model-specific NVIDIA guide figures, not a general optical-module power rating. The current transceiver specification should be checked. Publication year is not shown in the retrieved guide. NVIDIA’s cabling guide
Up to 10 km for cited 100 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s single-mode optical Ethernet PHYs IEEE overview example associated with the 2021 amendment identified on the standards page; verify the applicable PHY specification and adopted version. IEEE 802.3 overview

These figures describe different settings—enterprise link lengths, HDR InfiniBand equipment, and specified Ethernet PHYs—so they cannot be combined into a single copper-versus-fiber ranking.

A practical checklist before deployment

  • PHY, rate, and reach: Confirm the precise Ethernet or InfiniBand interface and the maximum supported distance at the required data rate.
  • Endpoint compatibility: Check both device ports, cable assembly, transceiver, protocol, and vendor compatibility.
  • Whole-link cost and power: Include cables, optics or active assemblies, port or module power, and any relevant cooling impact. Do not assume one medium is always cheaper or more efficient.
  • Density and routing: Compare cable diameter, pathway capacity, patch-panel needs, connector access, and strain relief.
  • Installation and service: Follow bend-radius limits; plan connector inspection and cleaning where fiber is used.

Installing and maintaining fiber connections

Fiber performance depends on more than selecting the correct transceiver. Avoid bends tighter than the cable’s specified radius, use strain relief, and keep connector end faces clean. Fluke Networks identifies inspection and cleaning as critical steps for data-center fiber terminations; use tools and procedures that match the connector and equipment. See Fluke Networks’ fiber cleaning and inspection guidance.

Before connecting a fiber link, inspect and clean the end face as appropriate, then verify the link after installation. The exact inspection method and cleaning tool depend on the connector and equipment; a general-purpose kit is not automatically suitable for every termination.

Make the choice at the link level

Start with the PHY and required reach, then verify the endpoint ports and compatible cable assembly. Use passive DAC where a supported short in-rack connection suits the installation; use fiber where the selected optical PHY and components meet the reach or routing needs. Compare full system cost, power, density, and service requirements rather than treating copper or fiber as a universal winner.
