Copilot Vision can look at a screen or app you choose and give spoken, contextual guidance during a voice conversation. On Windows, start Copilot Voice, select Share screen, choose what to share, and ask about what you see. It can explain visible content, but it will not operate your computer for you.

What Copilot Vision does

Copilot Vision is an opt-in feature that lets you discuss selected on-screen content with Copilot. It can help interpret a chart, table, slide, dense passage of text, or interface and explain what to do next. Microsoft describes Windows desktop sharing as letting Copilot see the selected screen or window and talk about it in real time.

Vision is guidance, not remote control. Microsoft Support states: “Copilot Vision doesn’t click, enter text, or scroll on your behalf.” You remain responsible for taking any action on your PC.

How to use Copilot Vision on Windows

  1. Open Copilot and start a Voice conversation.
  2. Select Share screen, then choose the screen or app you want Copilot to see. Microsoft says you can share up to two apps at once.
  3. Make sure your microphone and audio are enabled, then ask a question about the visible content.
  4. When finished, stop sharing from the floating toolbar or end the session. An outline marks the screen or app being shared while Vision is active.

Vision is off by default; it starts observing only after you initiate a session and select content to share. During an active session, Copilot can continue answering questions about selected apps even if they are no longer in front. Ending the session ends that access to the shared context.

How Vision differs across Copilot experiences

The name appears in several Copilot experiences, but access, workflow, and grounding are not identical. Check the instructions and account requirements for the Copilot app you use.

Experience What you share and how you use it Availability or context
Copilot on Windows Share a screen or selected app during a Copilot Voice session; ask questions aloud. Microsoft’s current support instructions describe the feature as off by default. Access can vary by experience and rollout.
Copilot in Edge In a Voice session, select Share screen to discuss a page. Microsoft says most sites and pages are supported; an unavailable site is shown with a grayed-out icon. Microsoft’s instructions specify signing in with a personal Microsoft account. Harmful or adult content is excluded.
Copilot mobile Microsoft documents mobile Vision, including screen sharing; its Microsoft 365 overview also describes sharing a mobile camera in a voice conversation. Availability may vary during rollout. The camera-sharing description is from the Microsoft 365 Copilot overview and should not be assumed to apply identically to every Copilot app.
Microsoft 365 Copilot During a voice conversation, share a desktop screen or mobile camera. The overview says Copilot can interpret text, images, charts, and interfaces and combine visual input with Microsoft 365 work data such as documents, email, meetings, and prior discussions. This work-oriented description does not establish that every personal Copilot Vision experience has the same work-data access or entitlement.

Microsoft says commercial users signed in with Entra ID can use Vision in Copilot web and mobile apps. Requirements can differ by product, account, license, and region; consult Microsoft’s current Copilot Vision instructions for the experience you intend to use.

What Vision cannot see or do

  • It does not click, type, scroll, or otherwise manipulate screen items.
  • Microsoft says harmful or DRM-protected content cannot be analyzed. In Edge, the share icon is grayed out for sites that are unavailable.
  • Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 overview says Vision cannot read videos or animated GIFs.
  • If you switch windows too quickly while asking a question, Microsoft says Copilot may answer about the wrong screen.
  • That overview says Vision has no long-term recall of previous screens or camera input. Treat each session as a discussion of the content currently available to it.

Microsoft’s overview also says Vision works only through voice chats and that daily use depends on available capacity and counts toward daily voice usage. Capacity and access terms can change, so check the applicable product guidance rather than assuming a fixed allowance.

Privacy controls and conversation history

You choose when to share and what to show; ending the session stops Vision’s observation. Microsoft says Vision session inputs are not used to train its models. It also says session data may be retained for up to 47 hours to support feedback, then automatically deleted if no feedback is submitted. This is Microsoft’s description of Vision session data, not a blanket security guarantee for everything visible on your computer.

Why the desktop-sharing update matters

Microsoft announced on July 15, 2025, that Windows Copilot Vision desktop sharing was beginning a gradual rollout to Windows Insiders. At that time, the announced rollout used the Microsoft Store for app version 1.25071.125 or later, initially in markets where Windows Vision was enabled. Microsoft cautioned that not every Insider would receive it immediately. Those details describe the rollout’s history, not today’s complete eligibility rules.

For current behavior, Microsoft’s Copilot Vision usage guide and Microsoft 365 Vision overview are the more relevant references. The original Windows Insider announcement explains how desktop sharing was introduced.
