Choose a Copilot+ PC if you specifically want its qualifying on-device Windows experiences and the exact laptop suits your workload. Choose a traditional Windows laptop if it meets your needs without those experiences. The Copilot+ label sets a hardware eligibility threshold; it does not guarantee a faster, cheaper, or longer-lasting laptop. Compare the actual model’s processor, graphics, memory, storage, screen, price, and software compatibility.
What exactly is a Copilot+ PC?
A Copilot+ PC is a defined hardware class, not a synonym for every Windows laptop with an NPU or access to Windows Copilot. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 specifications require all of the following for Copilot+ qualification:
- A compatible processor or system-on-chip with an NPU capable of 40+ TOPS. Microsoft’s current list includes AMD Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series, Intel Core Ultra 200V and 300V series, and Snapdragon X series.
- At least 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 RAM.
- At least 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage.
These are platform minimums, not performance ratings. A PC may have an NPU and run compatible local AI workloads without meeting all Copilot+ requirements; it would not qualify for exclusive Copilot+ experiences such as improved Windows search and Click to Do. Microsoft notes that requirements can change and that individual features, apps, and hardware may have additional requirements. Check the current Windows 11 specifications and the requirements for any feature you plan to use.
How do Copilot+ PCs differ from traditional Windows laptops?
The practical difference is eligibility for certain Windows experiences—not a guarantee that the whole laptop is better. Microsoft lists NPU-powered experiences delivered through 2026, including Recall (preview), Click to Do, improved Windows search, Live Captions with translation, and Windows Studio Effects. Availability can depend on the feature, update, language, device, and other requirements, so do not assume every feature works on every Copilot+ model or in every market.

Which type should you buy?
Choose a Copilot+ PC if its specific features matter to you
If you want a particular Copilot+ experience, confirm that the exact laptop qualifies and that the feature is available for its configuration, language, and region. Then compare the rest of its specifications and price with alternatives. The label alone does not establish that it is the right choice for gaming, creative work, or any other workload.

Choose a traditional Windows laptop if it fits your needs without Copilot+ exclusives
If you do not need the qualifying experiences, there is no reason to treat the Copilot+ designation as a requirement. A traditional Windows laptop may be the better fit if its specific configuration, compatibility, or price better suits you. Judge the model rather than the category name.

- Processor and graphics: Compare the exact CPU and GPU, not just the Copilot+ branding. Microsoft recommends a discrete GPU for intense graphics and notes that game requirements vary. For demanding creative workloads or gaming, check the requirements of the software or games you use against the exact model.
- Memory: Copilot+ qualification requires at least 16 GB DDR5 or LPDDR5, but that floor does not mean 16 GB is enough for every workload. Microsoft recommends 16 GB or more for its AI-oriented buyer profile. Check whether memory is upgradeable before purchase.
- Storage: The Copilot+ minimum is 256 GB SSD or UFS. Microsoft’s buying guide suggests 256 GB to 1 TB or more for saving photos, videos, and documents; the right capacity depends partly on how much you keep locally versus in cloud storage.
- Screen, ports, keyboard, battery, warranty, and price: Compare these for the exact model and configuration. Do not infer category-wide value or battery life from the Copilot+ designation, and do not treat one manufacturer’s battery claim as a comparable independent test.
- Apps and peripherals: Check the software, games, drivers, and devices you rely on, especially for Arm-based configurations.
There is no category-wide price or battery statistic established here that would let you decide by label alone. Current prices and configurations change, so compare the specific laptops available to you.

Not all Copilot+ PCs share the same processor architecture. Some use Arm processors, and compatibility deserves extra attention if you depend on specialized software or hardware. Microsoft says most Windows apps can run on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs. Native Arm apps generally perform best; Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism emulation for many apps, which Microsoft says improves emulated app performance compared with earlier generations of Arm devices.

Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 apps and examples including Chrome, Slack, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve as having native Arm versions. That list is not a guarantee about every app feature, version, plug-in, or connected device. Microsoft’s guidance is that “Apps rebuilt for Windows Arm-based PCs have the best performance.”
Driver-dependent software and peripherals need compatible drivers built into Windows or released for Arm64. Some games, particularly those using unsupported anti-cheat drivers, can be problematic. Before choosing an Arm model, verify support with the relevant app publisher or hardware maker for any essential specialist or assistive software, security tool, printer, scanner, or other device. See Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ.
How to make the decision
- Write down your must-haves. Include essential apps, games, peripherals, graphics needs, and any specific Copilot+ experience you want.
- Check Copilot+ eligibility if an exclusive experience matters. Verify the exact model against Microsoft’s current processor, NPU, RAM, and storage requirements; then check the feature’s own prerequisites and availability.
- Verify compatibility. For Arm-based models, confirm app and driver support with the app or device maker before buying.
- Compare complete configurations. Review CPU, GPU, memory, storage, display, ports, keyboard, battery information, warranty, upgradeability, and current price for each candidate.
- Choose based on your work, not the badge. Buy Copilot+ for its qualifying experiences when the hardware fits; otherwise, choose the Windows laptop that best meets your needs and budget.
Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC lineup shows available models, but inventory and configurations change. Confirm the specifications and compatibility of the exact listing before purchasing.
