Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a MacBook Air M5 if macOS or Apple ecosystem workflows suit you; choose a Copilot+ PC if you need Windows 11 or a specific Windows feature. “Copilot+ PC” describes a class of computers from multiple manufacturers, not one model, so the right next step is to compare specific laptops with similar memory, storage, and screen sizes. Available manufacturer battery estimates use different tests, and the cited sources do not establish a category-wide performance winner.
Start with your operating system and essential apps
The most useful first question is whether your work, school, or personal setup depends on Windows 11 or macOS. Copilot+ PCs run Windows 11; the MacBook Air M5 runs macOS. Check that the software and peripherals you rely on work with the operating system you choose, and confirm any workplace or school requirements before buying. The cited product pages do not establish compatibility for every app or device.
If you already use an iPhone or other Apple devices and depend on Apple ecosystem workflows, macOS may fit more naturally. If you need a Windows-only application, a Windows-based workplace setup, or a particular Windows feature, focus on a suitable Copilot+ model. Neither label alone tells you whether a particular laptop fits your needs.
Understand what you are comparing
Copilot+ PC is a hardware class
Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as Windows 11 computers with a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). That threshold is an NPU capability, not a measure of total computer speed. The class includes devices from multiple makers using Snapdragon, Intel, and AMD platforms, and specifications such as memory, storage, display, and price vary by model. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC overview lists examples and features.

Choose based on the work you actually do
Choose a Copilot+ PC when Windows compatibility is the priority
- You need Windows 11 for essential software, workplace systems, or peripherals.
- You have identified a Copilot+ feature you will use and confirmed its availability for your device, region, and language.
- You have a particular model whose memory, storage, display, ports, and price meet your needs.
Microsoft’s category page names features such as Recall, Cocreator, Studio Effects, Live Captions, and automatic super resolution. Their presence in a category description does not guarantee identical availability or experience on every device; verify the current details for the model and software version you are considering.

Choose a MacBook Air M5 when macOS and the Apple setup fit better
- You prefer macOS or rely on Apple ecosystem workflows.
- The applications and accessories you need are compatible with macOS.
- The M5 Air’s display size, configuration, ports, and price suit your work.
Apple lists a 16-core Neural Engine and Neural Accelerators in the M5, and markets Apple Intelligence. Those specifications do not by themselves establish that Apple’s AI features match the scope, availability, or quality of Microsoft’s named Windows features.
Read battery claims as estimates, not a head-to-head result
Apple’s technical specifications give the MacBook Air M5 estimates of up to 15 hours of wireless web and up to 18 hours of video streaming. Apple says the tests used pre-production systems in January 2026: wireless web testing browsed 25 popular websites over Wi-Fi, while video streaming used 1080p content in Safari over Wi-Fi. Apple notes that actual battery life varies with use and configuration. Apple’s technical specifications provide the test details.

Microsoft’s March 2026 disclosure gives up to 19 hours of web browsing for selected pre-production next-generation Copilot+ PCs. Its test used a 96% battery discharge while browsing multiple websites and tabs over Wi-Fi, with default settings except for 150-nit screen brightness and Auto-Brightness turned off. Because the selected devices and procedures differ from Apple’s, the figures cannot establish which category lasts longer in equivalent use.
Use this checklist before you buy
- Confirm the operating system. Verify Windows 11 or macOS meets your workplace, school, and personal requirements.
- Check essential apps and peripherals. Confirm compatibility for the exact software and devices you depend on.
- Pick exact configurations. Record each candidate’s memory, SSD capacity, and screen size before comparing prices.
- Verify the features you want. Check current eligibility and availability for your model, region, and language rather than relying on a broad AI label.
- Check desk setup compatibility. Confirm ports, external-display support, charging needs, and dock or adapter compatibility for the exact laptop.
- Compare current local prices. Include the configuration you actually need and any accessories required for your setup.
Is one category faster overall?
The cited sources do not provide an apples-to-apples independent benchmark comparing the MacBook Air M5 with a matched Copilot+ laptop. A Copilot+ PC is a broad hardware class, and its models use different processors and configurations, so the category label and NPU threshold cannot establish overall speed. Compare independent results for the specific models and workload you care about rather than treating either category’s marketing claims as a performance verdict.
