A thermoelectric cooler (TEC), also called a Peltier module, can move heat away from a chip—but it cannot make that heat disappear. The module’s hot face must dissipate both the chip’s heat and the electricity the TEC consumes. That requirement, plus the temperature difference you need, determines whether a design works.
How does a thermoelectric cooling chip work?
A TEC is a solid-state heat pump: DC current moves heat from one face of the module to the other. Typically, p-type and n-type semiconductor elements are joined between ceramic plates; bismuth-telluride alloys are common in single-stage coolers. Reverse the current and the hot and cold faces swap. Coherent’s Thermoelectric Solutions Guide describes a TEC as a semiconductor-based electronic component that functions as a small heat pump.
This makes TECs useful when compact size, reversible heating and cooling, no moving parts, vibration-free operation, or precise temperature control matters. But a TEC is not a passive cold plate: it needs electrical power and a path to carry heat away from its hot face.
Why the hot side sets the limit
The hot side must reject the heat removed from the chip plus the TEC’s own electrical heating. If the hot-side heat sink cannot dissipate that combined load, its temperature rises, making it harder for the module to keep the cold side cool. Thermal interface layers and mounting surfaces add further temperature drops. TE Technology’s module selection guidance calls for a heat sink, often with forced-air or liquid cooling, to achieve sufficiently low thermal resistance.

- Model: TEC1-12706.
- Size: 40mm x 40mm x 3.6mm.
- Refrigeration power: Qcmax 50-60W.
- Operation Temperature: -30°C-70°C(-86℉-158℉)
A heat sink is therefore part of the TEC system, not an optional accessory. Depending on the heat load and target temperature, a complete arrangement may also need a cold plate, thermal interface material, temperature sensor and controller, and protection against moisture. No single heat-sink or accessory model is established as suitable for every chip.
What datasheet cooling ratings mean
Do not treat a module’s maximum cooling capacity, Qc,max, as the heat load it can handle at your target temperature. That maximum is specified at a hot-to-cold temperature difference, ΔT, of zero. As ΔT increases, cooling capacity falls; at the module’s maximum ΔT, it reaches zero. Analog Devices author Robert Westby explains this in his November 17, 2024 article on higher-power Peltier cooling. The article describes around 70°C as a typical maximum ΔT for a single-stage module, not a universal rating.
For a meaningful comparison, use the manufacturer’s performance curves at the intended current and hot-side temperature, then account for the heat sink and mounting interfaces. Compare candidates against the actual operating conditions:

Manufacturer selectors and characterized assemblies can help narrow options, but the cited product and guidance pages do not establish a standardized independent head-to-head comparison. A larger or multistage module is not a shortcut around insufficient heat rejection: extra cooling potential still increases the load the hot side must manage.
Can you put a Peltier module on a CPU?
A TEC can be used in a chip-cooling arrangement, but the evidence here does not establish measured performance on a particular CPU or prove that a generic module is a drop-in processor cooler. Direct placement alone is not a complete design. You must match capacity to the chip’s heat load at the required ΔT, supply the required electrical current, reject the combined heat on the hot side, and account for mounting and condensation.
There is also an important distinction between a small module mounted near a chip and a thermoelectric cooler integrated into a processor package or fabricated on the die. Commercial micro modules demonstrate that compact TECs exist; they do not establish that those products are integrated CPU coolers. Thin-film TECs for on-chip cooling are a research direction, not evidence of a broadly available commercial processor-cooling product.

Commercial micro modules
TE Technology defines its micro modules by semiconductor element footprints under 1.0 mm² and lists model-level product data, including for the TE-65-0.6-1.0. The cited family is rated for use up to 80°C; that is a product rating, not a claim about ambient temperature or cooling performance at a particular load. See TE Technology’s Micro Modules specifications and check the current product data and availability before selecting a part.
Catalogued single-stage modules
CXTech’s TEC1-099 Series lists single-stage modules made from p-type and n-type semiconductor pellets, bismuth telluride, and aluminum oxide ceramic plates, with chip processing among the stated application areas. Its model-specific maximum current, voltage at zero cooling load, maximum ΔT, and maximum cooling capacity at ΔT = 0 are manufacturer ratings. They are not independent CPU-cooling results.

A 2017 research preprint, “High Efficiency Thin Film Superlattice Thermoelectric Cooler Modules Enabled by Low Resistivity Contacts,” discusses thin-film vanadium-telluride superlattice TEC modules and their on-chip cooling potential. It identifies metal–semiconductor contact resistance as an important device limitation. This is research context, not proof of a generally available processor-cooling product.

Single-stage, multistage, and system choices
Standard single-stage modules suit designs whose heat load and required temperature difference fall within the manufacturer’s operating curves. Multistage modules can increase achievable temperature difference, but they do not remove the need to reject the chip’s heat and the TEC’s electrical heating. Ferrotec Nord’s product portfolio describes one-, two-, and multistage standard modules as well as custom configurations; TE Technology also lists standard and multistage families.
For compact cooling experiments, a micro module may be a plausible physical component; for larger temperature differences, a multistage option may merit evaluation. Neither description is enough to choose a part. Select from the performance curves at your real load, current, hot-side temperature, and target ΔT, and design the heat-rejection assembly at the same time.

TEC modules handle compression better than tensile or shear stress. Uneven pressure, bending, or lateral loading can damage the module, while thermal cycling can contribute to fatigue. Moisture inside a module can reduce performance or corrode materials. TE Technology discusses these issues in its installation and technical FAQs; it also says it does not publish general-use reliability data because reliability depends on the test and application conditions.

If the cold surface falls below the dew point of the surrounding air, condensation is possible. TE Technology recommends considering perimeter-sealed or potted modules in that situation. The rest of the assembly also needs a moisture strategy appropriate to its operating environment.
When is thermoelectric chip cooling a good fit?
Consider a TEC when localized temperature control, a compact form factor, vibration-free operation, reversible heating and cooling, or a temperature below ambient is important enough to justify the added electrical input and hot-side cooling system. For ordinary PC cooling, the evidence cited here does not establish that TECs are more efficient, quieter as complete systems, or better than any particular conventional CPU cooler. Those claims require comparisons under specified operating conditions.
