A “cooling chip” can mean several different things: a tiny experimental device that moves air, a thermoelectric component inside an external gaming-phone cooler, or technology a company says it wants phone makers to integrate. The 2025 research device is not established as a component shipping in smartphones. For phone owners, the documented option here is a model-specific accessory, not a universal cooling chip.
What is a cooling chip for a smartphone?
There is no single, uniquely identified smartphone component called “the cooling chip.” The phrase has been used for different approaches, and the evidence for one should not be treated as evidence for another.
- Research chip: a piezoelectric micromachined synthetic-jet device that actively moves air across a target to improve heat transfer.
- External phone cooler: an accessory that attaches to a compatible phone and combines a fan with a thermoelectric cooling element.
- OEM-oriented cooling technology: a company’s proposed solid-state cooling technology intended for integration by device makers.
A Georgia Tech notice published September 26, 2024, says ECE professor Saibal Mukhopadhyay spoke with EE Times about smartphone heat and a possible cooling chip. The short notice does not establish that its subject is the same device described in a later research paper or that it is a commercial phone component. Georgia Tech’s notice is useful context, not a product specification.
How does the 2025 synthetic-jet chip work?
The 2025 paper describes a piezoelectric micromachined synthetic-jet cooler. Instead of relying only on passive heat spreading, the device creates a pulsating air jet that impinges on a hot surface and disrupts the thin layer of air that can impede heat transfer. The authors report a chip measuring 6 × 6.7 × 2.1 mm, power consumption of 69 mW, and a convective heat-transfer coefficient as high as 72 W/m²K. These are results for the device in the study, not a measured temperature drop for a complete smartphone.

- Expanded cooling area: Approximately 2.82x1.29 inches of extreme thermal conductivity cooling area, covering the CPU and battery module, protecting your phone from blackening or sudden shutdown.
The figures come from the abstract of “Energy-Efficient Piezoelectric MEMS Cooling Chip for Compact Electronics Based on a Partially Mechanical Decoupled Actuator,” published in IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, volume 72, issue 7, in 2025. The abstract does not establish that this prototype is independently replicated or integrated into a phone. Read the IEEE paper record.
Can a cooling chip keep a phone cooler during gaming?
An external cooler may help manage heat during demanding use, but the result depends on the specific cooler, phone, attachment and operating conditions. The research chip’s heat-transfer coefficient cannot be compared directly with a manufacturer’s claim about a phone’s surface temperature: they measure different things in different systems.

ASUS markets the AeroActive Cooler X, an external fan-and-thermoelectric accessory, for the ROG Phone 8 Series. ASUS claims it can reduce back-cover surface temperature by up to 36°C and improve thermal efficiency by up to 1.3×. These are ASUS’s advertised figures, not independent side-by-side test results. The claims do not establish a typical temperature change for every user or prove a particular improvement in game performance. Check ASUS’s AeroActive Cooler X details and compatibility.
ASUS separately advertises up to a 20°C lower surface temperature near the CPU for the AeroActive Cooler 6. That figure applies to the Cooler 6 and its compatible ROG phones; it should not be read as a general cooling expectation or as a result for the Cooler X. See the AeroActive Cooler 6 product page.

What should you know about condensation?
Thermoelectric cooling can lead to condensation in some conditions, but the available warning here is specific to ASUS’s accessory. ASUS says droplets may form on the AeroActive Cooler 6 when it meets a warmer external environment and advises users to wipe them. Its product page also describes a humidity sensor and protection mechanism. This is not evidence that every phone cooler will produce moisture. Read ASUS’s Cooler 6 condensation guidance and the Cooler 6 product information.
Quick Recap
How to judge cooling claims
- Identify the exact device: research prototype, external accessory, or technology proposed for OEM integration.
- Check what was measured: component-level heat transfer, phone surface temperature, or another outcome.
- Keep “up to” figures attributed to the manufacturer and tied to the named accessory and compatible phone context.
- Do not infer a phone-wide temperature drop, better sustained gaming performance, or universal compatibility from a component specification alone.
- Look for independent testing under comparable phone, workload, room-temperature and attachment conditions before treating marketing figures as typical results.
