Convenia says its PHP Full Docker image now supports both linux/amd64 and linux/arm64 for its listed release tags, and it has introduced a separate 8.5-dev variant with development tools. The announcement is useful if you build PHP applications for ARM hosts or want testing utilities inside a container; the details below reflect the publisher’s claims, not an independent registry or command-line verification.

What changed in Convenia’s PHP Full image?

In an announcement by Leonardo Lemos, Convenia describes two changes to convenia/php-full: ARM support for its listed tags and a development image for PHP 8.5. The announcement is titled “PHP FULL IMAGE NEWS”; the page identifies its date as Oct. 2 but does not establish the year.

Release tags and architectures

Convenia says the 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.5, and latest tags are published for linux/amd64 and linux/arm64. According to the announcement, Docker selects the appropriate architecture automatically when pulling an image. Check the live registry manifests before treating the platform list as current or relying on a particular tag in a release pipeline.

ARM support may be relevant when deploying to ARM-based infrastructure such as AWS Graviton, an example named in the post. The announcement does not compare cloud providers, instance prices, or application performance.

A development variant for PHP 8.5

The post describes convenia/php-full:8.5-dev as the development variant available at the time of writing, and says it is based on the production image. Its additional tools are:

  • pcov for coverage collection
  • Infection for mutation testing
  • Redocly CLI
  • nvm, Node LTS, npm, and yarn
  • bash, vim, and sudo

The announcement does not provide image-size measurements or a comparison of build and runtime performance. Its listed additions make the development tag a different toolset, not evidence that it is interchangeable with a production image.

How to try the development image locally

Lemos’s example changes the image in docker-compose.yml, mounts the application at /var/www/app, then opens a shell in the running service. Adapt the service name and configuration to your project:

  1. Set the service image to convenia/php-full:8.5-dev and mount your application directory at /var/www/app.

  2. Start the service using your Compose configuration.

  3. Enter the container with the example command docker compose exec app bash. Here, app is the service name used in the example.

The article also suggests adding a missing package inside the development container with sudo apk add. The exact package-install command depends on the package name and Alpine repositories available to the image; the announcement does not list packages beyond the tools included in the variant.

Using the image in CI

The post’s CI example uses the development image to run Composer installation, PHPUnit coverage, and Infection. It also notes that a project can use nvm to install a different Node version. These are examples in the announcement, not independently executed or validated commands. For a pipeline, pin the image tag deliberately and confirm that the required PHP extensions, package-manager behavior, and Node version match the project before relying on the image.

What the announcement says about builds and updates

Convenia says it moved builds from Docker Hub autobuild to GitHub Actions, runs tests before publication, and continues weekly Saturday rebuilds to collect base-image security updates. Those are operational claims in the announcement; it does not establish that the schedule or workflow remains unchanged today. Teams with release or security requirements should verify the current repository workflow and image publication history rather than treating a rebuild cadence as a substitute for their own update policy.
