In CONTROL Resonant, The Dancer first seems beatable with aggression, then changes pace and punishes that approach. Zack Zwiezen’s account of the encounter shows why its eventual answer—watch, time your dodges, and move with the boss—feels more satisfying than simply hitting harder.
Why The Dancer changes the way you play
Zack Zwiezen describes The Dancer as a slender figure moving through hops and chassés in a theater, surrounded by a suspended audience. He begins by spamming aerial attacks, takes hits, and defeats the opening form. Then the boss returns faster and more aggressively.
On repeated attempts, rushing only makes matters worse. Zwiezen considers changing the difficulty, but instead slows down and pays attention to the boss’s movements. His key realization is that the opening phase has functioned as a rehearsal: it prepares him for moves that matter in the later fight.
He jumps less, dodges in rhythm, and stops relying on indiscriminate big combos. As he puts it, “I need to dance with this monster to defeat it.” That is Zwiezen’s account of his own playthrough, not a guaranteed strategy or independently tested walkthrough. Its value is in showing how the encounter changed his decisions: observation and timing worked where rushing had failed. Kotaku’s account of The Dancer describes the sequence in detail.

When a boss fight makes its theme playable
The theater setting could have been decoration. Instead, the performance imagery gives the fight’s rhythm a natural meaning: the player is not just dodging attacks, but learning to move in time with a dancer. The encounter’s mechanics and atmosphere reinforce one another, so the successful change in approach also feels like understanding the scene.
That connection helps explain why the second form can feel like more than a larger health bar. The phase shift asks the player to revise an assumption formed in the first phase. The fight becomes memorable because its learning curve, visual setting, and action point in the same direction.

How Remedy describes its boss design
The developers’ description of the process offers context for this kind of encounter. In a September 29, 2026 PlayStation Blog interview, Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov said Remedy intended bosses to be “skill checks” for the player. He described a process involving team pitches, selecting ideas for the intended player experience, prototyping, documenting creature behavior, and iterating with concept artists and writers.
Art Director Elmeri Raitanen said each Resonant boss was built around a theme, citing control inspired by mycelium or a hive mind, and said the team wanted to evoke awe and a sense of the majestic or divine. These comments describe the broader development approach, not a claim that every boss works equally well. The Dancer is a clear example of the hoped-for connection: the player learns a skill, while the fight’s theatrical identity makes that learning feel appropriate to its setting.

Why this is not a defense of every boss fight
A fight can have distinct phases and still become tedious. PC Gamer found Resonant bosses more engaging to navigate than generic threats, while criticizing some health bars as a slog and pointing to broader combat friction, including inconsistent targeting. GamesCreed likewise praised the bosses’ visual distinction but said many could turn into long health-bar grinds after their patterns were learned, with camera and targeting issues in some aerial encounters.
Worthplaying offered a more positive mechanics assessment, noting varied attacks and phases, including occasions when players deal with minions before returning to the boss, as well as some opportunities to recover health. These are reviewers’ judgments, not measured properties that apply identically to every player or encounter. Taken together, they underline the difference between a demanding fight and a satisfying one: difficulty needs readable cues and meaningful adaptation, while health and repetition must not drown out the learning.

What makes a boss fight worth learning
- Readable cues: The player can observe a pattern and make a better decision on a later attempt.
- A real skill test: The fight asks for timing or movement the game has prepared the player to use.
- Mechanics that fit the fiction: The setting, character, and way the encounter plays reinforce one another.
- Pressure without attrition: Repetition and health pools preserve tension rather than making success feel like an endurance test.
The Dancer, as Zwiezen experienced it, lands especially well on the first three measures. That makes it a persuasive example of why boss fights can be good—not evidence that every boss is, or that a clever theme can excuse a fight that drags.
