What should I upgrade first in Control Resonant? Upgrade the parts of combat you rely on most: favor choices that support the ability-to-stun-to-execution cycle if you build around powers, or Aberrant forms and talents that reinforce close-range pressure if you prefer melee. Remedy’s descriptions explain how these systems interact, but do not establish a universally best first ability or upgrade node.
Which abilities should I unlock first?
Choose according to the role you want your build to play, rather than following a supposed universal tier list. Remedy describes build variety that includes both close-range combat and more tactical approaches using summons. Its published material does not rank early abilities or compare their damage, so a particular first pick cannot be presented as a proven best choice. Remedy’s combat overview explains the interactions that can guide your choice.
If you use abilities to control fights
Look for upgrades that support the way you use abilities to disrupt enemies and create openings. Remedy says abilities can stun enemies and open them to executions. Melee hits restore Combat Ability resource, while executions temporarily boost melee damage. That makes a useful loop to consider: regain resource through melee, use abilities to create openings, then follow up with an execution and its temporary melee boost.
This is a way to evaluate an ability-focused build, not a guarantee that any one ability or node is superior. Match your investment to the abilities you actually use and how reliably you can follow up on their openings.

If you prefer weapon pressure
Favor Aberrant forms and talents that fit your preferred attack range and the kind of pressure you want to maintain. Remedy describes separate upgrade trees for Aberrant forms, but does not provide current comparative node values in the cited material. Check the in-game descriptions for the exact effects and prerequisites before committing.
If you want a mixed build
Balance your choices around how often you switch between direct melee and powers. An upgrade that looks strong on its own may matter less if it does not support the way you move between weapon attacks, ability use, and follow-up damage.

What should you consider before spending upgrades?
Start with your combat role
Decide whether you want to focus on direct melee damage, crowd control, defense, or tactical summons. Remedy’s description of multiple build styles makes this a more useful starting point than trying to optimize for an unsupported universal ranking.
Check how the choice fits the resource loop
For an ability-led setup, consider whether your approach lets you keep using abilities and capitalize on the stuns they create. For a weapon-led setup, assess whether the chosen Aberrant form and talents suit your range and follow-up style. The published combat descriptions establish these system relationships, but not an exact sequence of nodes.

Treat artifacts as build choices
Artifacts provide passive modifiers that can affect survivability, combat performance, exploration, or resource economy. Some also impose conditions or trade-offs. Compare the specific stat or behavior an artifact changes with any cost or condition it adds; do not assume every passive is an unconditional benefit. Remedy describes artifacts in its combat overview and New Game Plus overview.
Plan for first-run specialization
Remedy says you cannot unlock everything in one playthrough. Make the first run a coherent build rather than spending as though every branch will be immediately available. New Game Plus carries over Aberrant upgrades, health and Combat Ability resource improvements, unlocked supernatural combat abilities, talents, and artifacts. It also adds talent nodes and lets you equip multiple different combat abilities from the same boss. These options create room to experiment later, rather than making every first-run choice available at once.

Keep traversal unlocks separate
Traversal abilities are tied to story progression and do not carry over into New Game Plus. They are separate from the combat-build investments described here, so do not treat a story-gated movement unlock as an upgrade choice for your combat setup.

- Combat role: Does the choice support direct melee damage, crowd control, defense, or tactical summons?
- Resource loop: Does your setup make use of melee hits to restore ability resource, then turn ability-created stuns into execution opportunities?
- Weapon relationship: Does the Aberrant form and its upgrades suit your preferred range and role? Xbox Wire describes separate form upgrade trees, but the cited material does not establish exact current node values. Xbox Wire’s gameplay overview provides more on the weapon and combat design.
- Artifact trade-offs: What passive changes, and does it come with a condition or cost?
- First-run opportunity cost: Does this investment strengthen the build you want now, given that not every option can be unlocked in one go?
When does Command unlock?
Command is a late-game progression detail, not an early upgrade priority. Epic’s September 2026 guide says it unlocks after the Unknown Resonant encounter and that Resonant Tokens can unlock an ability in the Gap; Ignite and Inferno are given as an example. Use this information when you reach that progression point, rather than treating it as advice for what to upgrade first. Epic’s Control Resonant guide covers the unlock.
