If your computer screen suddenly looks black and white, first check the operating system’s accessibility color filters. On Windows, also check whether a keyboard shortcut switched the filter on; on a Mac, check Color Filters. If Windows colors remain unusual, reset Contrast themes as a separate check.
1. Turn off Color filters in Windows
Windows Color filters change the screen’s color palette, and a grayscale filter can make the display appear monochrome. Microsoft documents this setting for Windows 11 and Windows 10.
- Press Windows logo key + U to open Accessibility settings, or open Settings > Accessibility.
- Select Color filters.
- Switch Color filters off if it is on.
Microsoft describes the feature as a way to change the on-screen palette to help distinguish items that differ only by color. See Use color filters in Windows.
2. Check the Windows color-filter keyboard shortcut
If grayscale returns after you turn the filter off, a shortcut may be switching it back on. Intel’s guidance for the Windows 10 family recommends checking the color-filter shortcut setting when accidental activation is suspected.

- Open Settings > Accessibility > Color filters.
- Check whether the keyboard shortcut for turning color filters on or off is enabled.
- If you keep triggering it accidentally, disable the shortcut.

3. Reset Contrast themes in Windows
Contrast themes are not the same as Color filters: they change interface contrast and colors rather than applying a grayscale filter. If the screen has an unusual palette instead of being consistently monochrome, set the theme back to None.

- Open Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes.
- Choose None.
- Select Apply.

4. Turn off Color Filters on a Mac
macOS Color Filters can display the entire screen in grayscale. If Grayscale is selected, turn the filters off or choose another filter.

- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Accessibility > Display > Color Filters.
- Turn Color Filters off, or change the selected filter if Grayscale is active.
Apple notes that Color Filters can be toggled with Accessibility Shortcuts. Its guide, Change display colors on Mac to make it easier to see what’s onscreen, describes filters for color vision deficiencies, grayscale viewing, and screen tinting.

These settings explain common software causes, but they do not establish that every monochrome display is caused by an accessibility filter. The available guidance does not identify a universal hardware or software fault when these checks fail. Contact your computer or graphics vendor’s support for device-specific troubleshooting; Intel advises contacting Intel support if its filter checks do not resolve the issue.

Windows light and dark modes change interface appearance and are distinct from Color filters, so dark mode is not the relevant first check for a truly grayscale screen. See Microsoft’s explanation of color modes in Windows.
