Suspicious stew is a food item with a hidden status effect. The flower used to make it determines that effect, but the finished bowl does not show the flower, effect, or duration in its name, texture, or normal tooltip. That makes the recipe useful for planned effects—and risky when the stew came from loot or an unidentified villager trade.
This guide covers the shapeless crafting recipe, all 14 flower variants, Java and Bedrock durations, alternative ways to obtain the stew, and the command differences that commonly cause confusion.
Suspicious stew recipe
Use these four ingredients:
- 1 bowl
- 1 red mushroom
- 1 brown mushroom
- 1 eligible small flower
The recipe is shapeless. Put the ingredients anywhere in the 2×2 inventory crafting grid or the 3×3 Crafting Table grid. You do not need to copy a particular pattern.
How to craft it
- Open your inventory or a Crafting Table.
- Place one bowl, one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, and one small flower in the grid.
- Take the suspicious stew from the output slot.
Minecraft does not normally show Suspicious Stew as a separate recipe-book entry. In Java Edition, the recipe can be assembled by selecting the Mushroom Stew recipe and adding a valid small flower. If the recipe does not appear, check that you have both mushroom colors, a bowl, and an eligible flower.

All 14 suspicious stew flower recipes
The flower controls the status effect. The four tulip colors count as separate flower recipes even though they produce the same effect. Likewise, Blue Orchid and Dandelion share an effect, as do Poppy and Torchflower.
| Flower | Effect | Java duration | Bedrock duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allium | Fire Resistance | 4 seconds | 2 seconds |
| Azure Bluet | Blindness | 8 seconds | 6 seconds |
| Blue Orchid | Saturation | 0.35 seconds | 0.3 seconds |
| Dandelion | Saturation | 0.35 seconds | 0.3 seconds |
| Cornflower | Jump Boost | 6 seconds | 4 seconds |
| Lily of the Valley | Poison | 12 seconds | 10 seconds |
| Oxeye Daisy | Regeneration | 8 seconds | 6 seconds |
| Poppy | Night Vision | 5 seconds | 4 seconds |
| Torchflower | Night Vision | 5 seconds | 4 seconds |
| Red Tulip | Weakness | 7 seconds | 7 seconds |
| Orange Tulip | Weakness | 7 seconds | 7 seconds |
| White Tulip | Weakness | 7 seconds | 7 seconds |
| Pink Tulip | Weakness | 7 seconds | 7 seconds |
| Wither Rose | Poison | 8 seconds | 6 seconds |
There are 14 flower-specific recipes, but only nine distinct effects. The duplicate groups are:
- Saturation: Blue Orchid and Dandelion
- Night Vision: Poppy and Torchflower
- Weakness: all four tulips
- Poison: Lily of the Valley and Wither Rose, with different durations
The short Saturation effect is intentional
Blue Orchid and Dandelion suspicious stew apply Saturation for only a fraction of a second. That is still a real Saturation effect, not an empty or broken recipe. The effect is applied immediately when the stew is consumed, while the food item also restores its normal hunger and saturation values.
What suspicious stew restores
Every suspicious stew restores:
- 6 hunger points, equal to three drumsticks on the hunger bar
- 7.2 saturation
Suspicious stew is non-stackable, so each bowl occupies its own inventory slot. This limits how practical it is as a bulk food, especially when carrying several flower variants for different effects.

Which flowers work?
Use the small flowers listed in the table. Large two-block flowers are not valid substitutes. That excludes Sunflower, Lilac, Rose Bush, and Peony. A flower may look decorative or have a similar name, but it must be one of the eligible small-flower ingredients recognized by the recipe.

Making suspicious stew with a brown mooshroom
You can obtain a flower-specific stew without using a crafting grid if you find or create a brown mooshroom.
- Feed the brown mooshroom the small flower whose effect you want.
- Use a bowl on the brown mooshroom.
- Collect the resulting suspicious stew.
The flower you feed it determines the stew’s effect. After you use a bowl, the brown mooshroom returns to producing ordinary Mushroom Stew until you feed it another flower.
A red mooshroom does not produce flower-specific suspicious stew when fed a flower. The flower-and-bowl method described above specifically requires the brown variant.
Other ways to obtain it
Shipwreck supply chests
Suspicious stew can generate in shipwreck supply chests. The listed chance is 54.3% in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, according to the Minecraft Wiki.
Suspicious sand in desert wells
You can also find it by brushing suspicious sand in desert wells. The listed chance is 12.5% in both editions, according to the Minecraft Wiki.

Looted stew is less convenient than crafted stew because the item does not identify its flower or status effect. Treat an unidentified bowl as unknown until you are willing to accept the possible effect.
Expert farmer villagers
An expert farmer villager can sell suspicious stew for one emerald. In Java Edition, a villager may offer one or two suspicious-stew trades. The trade interface does not tell you which flower or effect a trade produces.

Each suspicious-stew trade entry from the same villager consistently produces the same stew type. If you have several entries, test or record them separately rather than assuming they all have the same effect.
Commands for suspicious stew
The basic command differs between editions.
Java Edition
/give @p minecraft:suspicious_stew 1
This gives a suspicious-stew item with no stored stew-effect data. In current Java Edition, consuming that command-given item applies no status effect; it is not equivalent to crafting a flower-specific bowl.
Bedrock Edition
/give @p suspicious_stew 1 0
In Bedrock Edition, a command-given suspicious stew chooses an allowable status effect at random. It therefore does not reliably create, for example, an Allium stew with Fire Resistance or an Oxeye Daisy stew with Regeneration.

Do not copy old Java NBT commands
Commands such as:
/give @p minecraft:suspicious_stew{Effects:[…]} 1
use the older Java item-NBT format. They come from outdated version-specific documentation and should not be treated as current Java item syntax, particularly after the item-data changes in Java Edition 1.20.5. If you need a particular effect, crafting the stew with the correct flower is the dependable in-game method unless you are writing a command for the exact version and item-component format you are running.
Common mistakes and outdated information
| Claim | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| Every suspicious stew has one universal random effect. | Crafted stew and brown-mooshroom stew use the flower to determine the effect. Random behavior applies to certain command-created Bedrock stews and to stews whose flower identity is unknown. |
| There are only 11 recipes. | There are 14 flower recipes when all four tulip colors and Torchflower are counted separately. |
| Poppy stew gives Speed. | Current Poppy suspicious stew gives Night Vision. The Poppy behavior changed from Speed to Night Vision in Java Edition 1.14.4. |
| The ingredients must follow a fixed pattern. | The recipe is shapeless, so ingredient positions do not matter. |
| Suspicious Stew appears as a normal recipe-book entry. | It is not normally listed as its own recipe-book entry. Java can expose the Mushroom Stew recipe as the starting point when the flower is added. |
| Any flower can be used. | Only eligible small flowers work. Large flowers such as Sunflower, Lilac, Rose Bush, and Peony do not. |
| The item tells you its effect. | The ordinary name, texture, and tooltip do not reveal the stored flower or status effect. |
Version notes
- Suspicious stew was added to Java Edition in 1.14.
- It was added to Bedrock Edition in the 1.13.0 series.
- In Java Edition 1.14.4, Poppy stew changed from Speed to Night Vision.
- In Java Edition 1.20, Torchflower became usable for suspicious stew and produces Night Vision.
FAQ
How many suspicious stew recipes are there?
There are 14 flower-specific recipes: one for each of the 14 eligible flower entries in the recipe table. Several share an effect, so there are fewer than 14 distinct status effects.
Does the placement of ingredients matter?
No. Suspicious stew is a shapeless recipe. Put the bowl, red mushroom, brown mushroom, and small flower anywhere in the inventory grid or Crafting Table grid.
What flower makes the best suspicious stew?
That depends on the purpose. Oxeye Daisy provides Regeneration, Allium provides Fire Resistance, Poppy or Torchflower provides Night Vision, and Blue Orchid or Dandelion provides Saturation. The effect durations are short, so use the bowl immediately when timing matters.
Best Value
Can I use a Wither Rose to make suspicious stew?
Yes. A Wither Rose makes Poison suspicious stew: 8 seconds in Java Edition and 6 seconds in Bedrock Edition.
Why does my Poppy suspicious stew not give Speed?
Speed is outdated information. Current Poppy suspicious stew gives Night Vision. The change occurred in Java Edition 1.14.4.
Can a red mooshroom make suspicious stew?
No. Feed a small flower to a brown mooshroom and then use a bowl on it. A red mooshroom does not produce flower-specific suspicious stew this way.
Can I identify suspicious stew before eating it?
Not from the ordinary item name, texture, or tooltip. A crafted bowl is predictable because you know which flower was used, but loot, villager, or otherwise unidentified stew does not reveal its effect.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why did the /give command give me stew with no effect in Java Edition?
The basic Java command gives an item without stored stew-effect data, so it is consumed like ordinary suspicious stew and applies no status effect. The Bedrock command behaves differently and selects an allowable effect at random.
The Bottom Line
To make a predictable suspicious stew, combine a bowl, red mushroom, brown mushroom, and the flower associated with the effect you want. The recipe is shapeless, but the finished item does not display its effect. For reliable results, craft the bowl yourself or use a brown mooshroom that you have fed the correct flower; do not assume that a loot-found bowl, villager trade, or basic command-created item has a known effect.
