If NotebookLM does not answer a question or refuses a source, first check that you can access the service, then check whether the relevant information is in your notebook and whether the source meets its import requirements. The fix depends on the source type: local files, web pages, YouTube videos, and audio each have different constraints.
NotebookLM does not answer my question
Google identifies three possible causes: language in a source triggered a safety flag, the question is unclear, or the uploaded sources do not contain the requested information. NotebookLM grounds its answers in notebook sources, so rewording a question cannot supply information that is absent.
- Ask a specific, understandable question rather than a broad or ambiguous one.
- Check that the notebook includes a source with the information you need.
- If the notebook has several sources, name the relevant source in your question or select only the relevant sources in the source panel.

A file will not import
For a local upload, check both the file size and the amount of text. Google lists a maximum of 200 MB for a local upload and 500,000 words per source. It says there is no page limit. An original PDF with copy protection is another documented reason an import may fail. These are limits, not a guarantee that every file within them will import successfully. A website or YouTube link will not import
Website pages
NotebookLM imports the text of the provided HTML page; it does not pull in images, embedded videos, or nested webpages. Paywalled pages are unsupported. If a URL points to a PDF, NotebookLM treats it as a PDF source rather than a web-page source. These rules are in Google’s source import guidance.
YouTube videos
The video must be public and have captions, either uploaded by the creator or automatically generated. Google says a video uploaded less than 72 hours earlier may not import. Other listed causes include an invalid URL, a safety issue, missing captions, or an unsupported video language. If a video becomes private or is deleted, Google says it is removed from the notebook within 30 days. See the YouTube and source import guidance.

Local audio will not import
NotebookLM transcribes imported audio and stores the transcript as a source. Audio without speech is unsupported, and Google warns that poor audio quality may prevent an import. If an audio file fails, check that it contains intelligible speech and try a clearer recording. Google’s source import guidance lists supported formats and transcription languages; consult that page for its current list.
An answer has no highlighted citation
A missing highlighted passage does not always mean an answer has no source. Google says that when source content is too short, NotebookLM may reference the entire document without citing an individual text passage. Check the cited source itself to evaluate the answer. NotebookLM is inaccessible
Google advises checking that your age is verified in your Google Account and that NotebookLM is supported in your country. If you are signing in with a work or school account, your Workspace administrator may need to enable the service. See Google’s NotebookLM FAQ.
