First identify where the problem occurs: between your encoder and the streaming platform, in viewers’ playback, or on the computer rendering and encoding the stream. Those three problems can all feel like “lag,” but they have different causes and fixes. Start with OBS Studio’s Statistics panel, then follow the matching troubleshooting steps below.

Find out what is actually failing

In OBS Studio, open View > Stats while streaming or running a representative test. Watch whether the dropped-frames count rises, whether OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, and whether the local output itself looks choppy. A healthy outbound stream can still buffer for a viewer; conversely, a smooth local preview does not prove the platform is receiving a stable feed.

What you notice Likely area to investigate First action
OBS reports increasing dropped frames Connection from your computer through the local network and ISP route to the platform ingest server, or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain Lower bitrate, test another ingest server if available, and check the network path
OBS has no rising dropped-frame count, but viewers buffer Viewer device, location, or connection; bitrate may also be too demanding for some viewers Ask whether one or many viewers are affected; consider a lower bitrate or resolution and check platform recommendations
Output is choppy or OBS reports rendering/encoding overload GPU or other system resources, game load, or scene complexity Reduce rendering load: cap game frame rate, simplify scenes, or reduce output demands

OBS Project’s connection guide says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; it describes these issues as typically outside OBS Studio’s control. Its guide, dated 2024-09-30, says, “It’s extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” Read OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.

Fix dropped frames and unstable connections

Lower bitrate to what your connection can sustain

A high speed-test upload result does not guarantee a stable route to the platform throughout a live broadcast. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, not as a guarantee or universal platform setting. Use the platform’s limits and recommendations too; if the connection remains unstable, lower the bitrate and retest.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Run a test stream at the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to use.
  2. In OBS, watch View > Stats for dropped frames. If the count rises, reduce bitrate and test again.
  3. If available, try a different platform ingest server. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which change helped.

Check Wi-Fi, router, and software on the connection path

OBS recommends a wired connection where possible because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, an Ethernet cable can remove wireless interference from the local connection, but cannot fix a faulty ISP route or platform ingest issue.

  • Restart existing modem and router equipment as an initial check.
  • Consider whether a VPN, security software, network-optimization application, outdated network driver, switch, extender, cable, or network card could be involved.
  • If you temporarily change security software to diagnose a problem, restore its protection afterward. Avoid disabling security as a permanent fix.
  • If instability continues or you are unsure whether hardware is faulty, contact your ISP before replacing a modem, router, or network component.

Determine whether the issue is service-specific

When practical, test another ingest server or another streaming service. If the stream works elsewhere, the problem may be specific to the original service or route; if it fails across services, investigate the local network, ISP, and computer. This comparison is a diagnostic clue, not proof of a particular fault.

Fix buffering reported by viewers

Viewer buffering is not the same as dropped frames from your encoder. A viewer’s device, location, and internet connection can cause playback trouble even when OBS shows a healthy outbound stream.

  1. Ask whether the problem affects one viewer or several, and whether it occurs on different devices or networks.
  2. Check OBS statistics. If dropped frames are increasing, troubleshoot your connection as above; if not, do not assume the broadcaster’s upload is the cause.
  3. If the audience still struggles, test a lower bitrate or resolution, staying within the platform’s published settings guidance.
  4. Consider whether the platform offers transcoding, which can let viewers select a lower playback quality. Availability varies by platform, so do not assume every viewer can choose another quality.

Reducing bitrate or resolution can make a stream more accessible to viewers with weaker connections, but it also reduces the quality you send. YouTube’s recommendations are a useful reference for YouTube broadcasts; check the relevant platform’s current guidance for other services.

Fix choppy output and OBS encoding overload

If the rendered output is choppy or OBS reports overload, investigate computer resources rather than starting with the network. In particular, a game may appear playable while using so much GPU capacity that OBS has too little left to composite scenes.

  1. Cap an uncapped game’s frame rate and, if needed, reduce its graphics settings to leave more GPU capacity for OBS.
  2. Simplify scenes. Remove unnecessary sources and reduce or remove expensive filters and browser sources where possible.
  3. Lower OBS output resolution if the system cannot sustain the current workload.
  4. Reduce output frame rate—for example, from 60 fps to 30 fps—if the computer cannot render and encode the higher rate reliably.
  5. Test after each change and check whether the local output and OBS overload indicators improve.

Lowering resolution or frame rate trades visual detail or motion smoothness for reduced processing demand. Make the change that resolves the overload while still meeting the needs of the broadcast.

Choose YouTube encoder settings and test before going live

There is no single bitrate that suits every resolution, frame rate, codec, connection, and audience. YouTube’s published encoder guide lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs; CBR bitrate encoding; RTMPS as the recommended secure protocol; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Confirm that your encoder and workflow support the settings you choose, and check YouTube’s current guidance before treating any example as a preset.

YouTube setting or example Published guidance
1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 12 Mbps recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps, H.264 17 Mbps recommended bitrate
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds
Bitrate encoding CBR
Secure protocol RTMPS recommended

Those 1080p60 figures are YouTube recommendations for the stated codec and output, not a guarantee that your connection or encoder can sustain them. For the full table and current requirements, use YouTube Help’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast, then monitor stream health during the event.

Prevent recurrences with a practical preflight

  • Run a representative test before an important broadcast, including the intended audio, movement, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  • Check OBS statistics during the test and confirm that dropped frames are not rising and rendering or encoding load remains manageable.
  • Confirm the selected platform ingest server and encoder settings; use the platform’s current published limits and recommendations.
  • Check whether the audience needs lower-bitrate playback and whether the platform provides transcoding.
  • Monitor stream health during the live event so you can respond if conditions change.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your challenge is keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running around the clock rather than fixing a live camera or gaming setup, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the uploaded videos looping, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the file as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a camera-based live broadcast. Start the free first day.
