A “password is incorrect” message in Windows recovery does not prove that you remembered the password incorrectly. First check whether the prompt wants your Windows account password or a BitLocker recovery key. If it is an account-password prompt, a keyboard-layout mismatch is a documented cause on multilingual Windows 8 and Windows RT systems—but Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that this legacy defect explains similar prompts on Windows 10 or 11.

Identify which credential the prompt wants

Windows recovery may ask for a Windows account password to use a tool, or it may ask for a BitLocker recovery key to unlock an encrypted drive. These credentials are not interchangeable. Read the full prompt before trying again.

  • Windows account password: This is the password for the local or Microsoft account associated with Windows.
  • BitLocker recovery key: This is a 48-digit number used when BitLocker cannot automatically unlock an encrypted drive. Microsoft says to note the first eight digits of the displayed recovery-key ID so you can match it to the correct saved key. Find it in the relevant Microsoft account, a work or school account, from your organization’s IT department, or in a printout or USB storage where it was saved. Microsoft Support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost key. Microsoft’s BitLocker recovery-key guidance explains the locations to check.

Could the keyboard layout make the password look wrong?

Microsoft documents a specific case affecting Windows 8 Enterprise and Windows RT: a username and password are rejected when starting Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) from Boot Options on a multilingual Windows installation. WinRE may display one language while using a keyboard layout associated with a different default input method. If the password contains characters whose keys differ between layouts, the characters entered may not match the ones in the password.

Microsoft describes the cause this way: “When WinRE starts, it uses the Windows locale setting to set the display language. However, WinRE incorrectly uses the default input method to set the default keyboard layout.” The Microsoft Support article covers that Windows 8/RT issue. It describes a hotfix for those versions and says OEM-provided Windows users should contact their device maker; it is historical guidance, not a general fix established for Windows 10 or 11.

Check the selected input method

If the PC is in the documented multilingual Windows 8/RT scenario, inspect the input language or keyboard layout shown at the credential prompt. Check the keys for punctuation, symbols, and any other characters that vary between layouts. Enter the password with the layout the prompt is actually using. If you are on Windows 10 or 11, this check is still a low-risk way to rule out mistyped characters, but the cited Microsoft defect does not establish that it is the cause on those versions.

Recover a local-account password through supported options

For a local account, Microsoft’s documented options depend on what you prepared or what other accounts are available:

  • At the Windows sign-in screen, select the password entry option, choose OK > Reset password, and answer the account’s security questions.
  • Use a password reset disk if you created one before losing access.
  • If you can sign in to another administrator account on the PC, use that account to reset the local account’s password.

Microsoft says a reset of Windows may be necessary if none of these options is available. Support agents cannot retrieve or circumvent a forgotten password. See Microsoft’s local-account password instructions before choosing a reset.

Choose a recovery action with its data impact in mind

Once you have identified the credential and checked the available password-recovery route, consider the least disruptive recovery option that addresses the startup problem. If the drive is encrypted, make sure you can access its BitLocker key before using tools that require the drive to be unlocked. Microsoft’s recovery-options guide explains the available choices and their effects.

Option When it may help Data and access considerations
Startup Repair Windows will not start correctly. Designed to address startup problems. Some encrypted devices require the BitLocker recovery key to use certain recovery tools. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair guidance.
Uninstall a recent update The problem began after a Windows update. Removes the selected update; it is a different intervention from resetting or reinstalling Windows.
System Restore A restore point is available and you want to revert system changes. Restores system state using a restore point; its effect differs from a full PC reset.
Reset this PC Less disruptive recovery choices have not resolved the problem. Effects on personal files, apps, and settings depend on the selected reset option. Back up important files where possible and review the choice before proceeding. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC guidance.
Reinstall Windows Other recovery options are unavailable or unsuccessful. Reinstallation can remove data. Back up files first if you can access them.

Open WinRE or use recovery media if Windows will not start

Windows Recovery Environment includes tools for startup troubleshooting, including Command Prompt for advanced troubleshooting. Microsoft lists several ways to reach it: Automatic Repair, Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup, holding Shift while selecting Restart, a manufacturer recovery button, a recovery drive, or Windows installation media followed by Repair my PC. Some encrypted devices require the BitLocker recovery key for certain tools. See Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment overview.

If existing recovery options are unavailable, a recovery drive or Windows installation media created on another working PC can provide another route into recovery. Creating a recovery drive erases the USB drive. Microsoft specifies a minimum 8 GB USB drive for Windows installation media on its recovery-options page. External media does not supply a missing account password or BitLocker key, and it does not change the legacy keyboard-layout defect.

Windows 10 support status

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its Windows recovery guidance covers current Windows 10 and Windows 11 recovery routes, but the multilingual keyboard-layout defect described above is specifically documented for Windows 8 and Windows RT; do not assume it explains a modern recovery prompt.
