Spartan and Berserker are the top-rated units in the latest community tier snapshot for Command an Army. The same September 2026 fan guide ranks Spearman, Crossbowman, and Shieldman in A tier, but a tier label is not a universal measure of usefulness: the right choice depends on the role your lineup lacks, which troops you can field, and their upgrade state.

Command an Army tier list

This is a September 2026 snapshot from the Command An Army Wiki’s Best Units Tier List, an independent fan guide rather than an official developer ranking. It says its qualitative rankings weigh role performance, survivability under pressure, and how difficult a unit is to obtain.

Tier Units What the guide’s ranking suggests
S Spartan, Berserker High-ceiling picks described as rare, self-sufficient carries.
A Spearman, Crossbowman, Shieldman Dependable role-fillers for anti-cavalry, ranged damage, and frontline defense.
B Archer, Knight line, Scout Rider Useful with support; the guide describes them as weaker in isolation or when underlevelled.
C Unevolved starter troops Low-cost opening bodies and fillers, not recommended by the guide as an end-state core.

The guide cautions that evolved and ascended units may outperform fresh pulls. Compare units at the upgrade level you can actually field, not only by their listed tier. The page also notes that patches can change the ranking, so check the live roster and update log after balance changes.

Which units should you choose for each role?

A lineup with role coverage can be more practical than several high-tier units that leave a key job uncovered. These are the fan guide’s recommendations, not independently verified match results.

Ranged damage: Archer or Crossbowman

Archer is presented as a steady basic ranged option; Crossbowman trades toward heavier single shots. Keep either behind a frontline rather than exposing it to direct pressure.

Special damage: Berserker or Spartan

Berserker is described as a high-damage bruiser. The guide calls Spartan an exceptionally rare pull that can anchor a match, but advises against chasing rarity at the expense of role coverage.

Army of Darkness: The Board Game
  • Players: 1-4

Mobility: cavalry options

Keep a cavalry option available to flank or chase exposed enemies. The guide advises waiting until enemy archers are exposed before committing cavalry, rather than sending it into a defended formation.

Is there one best unit in Command an Army?

Not for every lineup or situation. The fan guide singles out Spartan as a potential match anchor, but also says a dependable Shieldman with ranged support can matter more in practice. Fill the role your current lineup is missing, and invest in units you actually field instead of choosing by rarity alone.

How do upgrades and recruitment affect the ranking?

The fan wiki’s unit guide says unlocked units and upgrades are permanent account progress, while troops are recruited again during each round. Its progression guidance says evolution unlocks at level 20 and duplicate units can be combined to raise star level. These are unofficial guide claims; confirm the current requirements and rules in the game before planning upgrades.

Because the ranking is qualitative and does not provide reproducible match statistics or unit-by-unit numerical comparisons, it cannot establish exact performance differences, summon odds, or a universally strongest unit. The fan pages state that they are unaffiliated with the game’s developers, publishers, and platform owners.
