Cold does not make every hydra age. In cold-sensitive Hydra oligactis, researchers have found that a drop in temperature can trigger a switch from asexual budding to sexual reproduction, accompanied by stem-cell loss and an aging-like decline. The result does not apply to every hydra species or even every polyp in the studied strain.
Are hydras really immortal?
“Immortal” is shorthand for a striking laboratory observation, not a promise that an animal cannot die. Some hydras—especially Hydra vulgaris studied in stable laboratory conditions—have shown no detectable increase in age-related mortality or decline in reproductive rate over years of observation. Their continual stem-cell renewal is thought to help explain this lack of typical aging. That finding is specific to the studied animals and conditions; it is not a property established for every species in the genus.
The cold-linked aging result concerns a different species, H. oligactis, and especially cold-sensitive strains. In those animals, sexual reproduction and degeneration can occur together after cold induction. Some polyps do not make that transition and show no degeneration, and a cold-resistant strain is another counterexample. The careful conclusion is that some hydras can show little or no age-related decline under particular conditions, while some cold-sensitive H. oligactis can age after a reproductive switch.
What happens when cold triggers the reproductive switch?
In warmer conditions, H. oligactis can reproduce asexually by budding. Cold exposure can instead prompt the production of gametes—sperm in males and eggs in females. The parent polyp may then lose stem cells and tissue, decline in function, and eventually die. The findings describe an aging phenotype in the polyp; they do not mean that cold alone is a universal aging trigger.

The temperatures reported depend on the species and experiment. A 1991 study of H. oligactis reported budding at 18–22°C and gamete differentiation at 10–12°C. These are conditions from that study, not a temperature rule for all hydras. A separate 1976 study of Hydra hymanae found sexual reproduction after transfer from 24°C to 15°C: gonads first appeared after 12 days and were fully developed by 35 days. Those timings belong to H. hymanae, not H. oligactis.
How quickly did the 2026 experiment find changes?
Marami-Zonouz and colleagues compared clonal H. oligactis polyps kept at 18°C as controls with polyps cold-induced at 10°C. In that experiment, males were sexually mature by week 4 and females by week 6. The authors reported progressive loss of viability over 16 weeks.

These values describe the study’s cold-induced animals, not the lifespan or aging rate of all hydras. The different cell and size results by sex also show why “the hydra shrank by X percent” would be an inaccurate summary.
Why might reproduction and aging happen together?
The exact mechanism is not settled. A 2020 transcriptome study of a cold-sensitive male H. oligactis strain found increased expression of genes associated with cellular senescence, apoptosis, and DNA repair, alongside decreased expression of genes associated with stem-cell maintenance. The comparison with a cold-resistant strain supports a link between the response and strain sensitivity, but gene-expression associations do not prove that any one pathway causes aging.

A 1991 study proposed that, at a higher temperature that restricts successful sperm differentiation, cells already committed to the sperm pathway become increasingly vulnerable and die before differentiation is complete. This is a proposed explanation from that study, not a settled account of the full cold-induced aging process. The 2026 paper likewise proposes that stress perception may affect gene expression and metabolism in ways that influence signaling, gametogenesis, and aging.
What did taurine have to do with the results?
In the 2026 experiment, taurine levels declined by week 4 in both sexes during simultaneous gametogenesis and aging. Taurine supplementation partly reversed interstitial stem-cell loss during the first two weeks of cold induction and shifted the balance toward asexual reproduction in the experiment. This is a finding in hydra; it does not show that taurine prevents human aging or support taking it as a human anti-aging supplement.

Does cold make other hydras age—or simply help them survive winter?
Cold response depends on species, strain, and what the experiment measures. A separate study published online in 2024 examined cold acclimation in H. vulgaris, not the sexual-reproduction-linked aging phenotype in H. oligactis. H. vulgaris moved abruptly from 22°C to 4°C did not survive, while gradual exposure to intermediate temperatures such as 12°C for more than a week enabled acclimation and survival at 4°C. The acclimation was reversible after more than a week at room temperature.
That work concerns cold survival and overwintering physiology. It should not be treated as evidence that H. vulgaris undergoes the same reproductive switch or aging process as cold-sensitive H. oligactis.

What the studies do—and do not—show
- Established in the studied animals: Cold induction was associated with sexual gamete production and an aging phenotype in cold-sensitive H. oligactis.
- Not established: That cold makes all hydras age, or that every H. oligactis polyp responds the same way.
- Important distinction: Hydra findings described as “immortality” concern age-related mortality and reproductive decline under stable laboratory conditions, not invulnerability.
- Still uncertain: Why gametogenesis and aging co-occur in some strains, and which molecular changes are causes rather than accompanying signals.
