The CFTC’s September 28, 2026 approval registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a derivatives clearing organization (DCO), adding a clearinghouse to Coinbase’s derivatives infrastructure. Coinbase says that lets it create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly. Coinbase vice chairman Ryan VanGrack described the added flexibility as opening “many doors,” but the approval did not itself launch a Bitcoin product or guarantee access to one.

What the CFTC approved for Coinbase

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved the registration of Coinbase Clearing LLC as a DCO on September 28, 2026. Coinbase calls it the first USDC-native clearinghouse. In the company’s description, the registration completes an infrastructure stack comprising Coinbase Financial Markets, Inc. as a futures commission merchant (FCM), Coinbase Derivatives, LLC as a designated contract market (DCM), and Coinbase Clearing LLC as the DCO. Coinbase’s announcement describes the company’s view of what the new registration enables.

A clearinghouse sits between parties to cleared derivatives trades, helping manage and settle their obligations. Coinbase says its DCO gives it the ability to create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly, using native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement. General Counsel Molly Abraham said the approval “completes Coinbase’s end-to-end derivatives infrastructure.” These are Coinbase’s descriptions of its capabilities; they do not establish that a particular contract is already available.

What “opens many doors” means—and what it does not

In an October 6, 2026 Benzinga report about his interview with Bitcoin Magazine, Van Grack said, “It opens many doors that didn’t currently exist.” Benzinga characterized his point as greater flexibility to launch regulated products as Coinbase brings more operations in-house and reduces third-party bottlenecks. The remark is an executive’s description of potential flexibility, not a CFTC promise or a product-launch announcement. Benzinga’s report attributes the quote to Van Grack; it is not a full interview transcript.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Coinbase says the structure could support faster product development, more efficient operations, and flexibility to launch regulated products over time. The company has not said that all such products are live or available to every customer. It also says it will continue using partners for certain offerings, including its margined derivatives business and planned single-stock perpetuals.

Does this mean Coinbase can offer U.S. Bitcoin perpetual futures now?

Not on the basis of this approval alone. The September action registered Coinbase Clearing LLC as a DCO; Coinbase did not announce in that registration announcement that a Bitcoin perpetual futures contract had launched. Whether a product is offered, where it is available, and which customers qualify depend on the product and current terms. The registration should not be read as universal customer access or as approval of every possible contract.

There was a separate CFTC development in May 2026. CoinDesk reported that the agency approved Kalshi’s BTCPERP, which it described as the first true Bitcoin-referenced perpetual futures contract on a U.S.-regulated platform. Separately, the CFTC issued no-action guidance allowing Coinbase Financial Markets to route certain U.S. customers to global options and perpetuals through Coinbase Bermuda; that report said the products were treated as foreign futures and that digital assets including Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoins could be used as margin collateral. CoinDesk’s May 29 report covers those distinct actions.

May 2026 The CFTC approved Kalshi’s BTCPERP and issued no-action guidance involving Coinbase Financial Markets. Kalshi’s U.S.-platform Bitcoin perpetual and certain U.S. customer access to global products through Coinbase Bermuda. CoinDesk described the Coinbase-related action as no-action guidance, not a formal rule, and cautioned that the agency’s posture could change under future leadership.
September 28, 2026 The CFTC approved registration of Coinbase Clearing LLC as a DCO. Coinbase’s clearing infrastructure and its stated ability to create and settle fully collateralized contracts directly. A distinct registration milestone; it is not itself approval or launch of a specific Bitcoin perpetual futures product.

Van Grack’s view on Bitcoin access and custody

Benzinga also reported Van Grack’s view that direct Bitcoin ownership and spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds can coexist. He said clearer custody rules could expand direct Bitcoin access for investment advisers and institutions alongside spot ETFs. Those are his expectations about how access might develop, not a measured effect of the DCO registration or a settled legal outcome. The clearinghouse approval alone does not establish new custody rules.

What to check before interpreting a product announcement

  • Identify the action. A DCO registration, a product-specific approval, and no-action guidance are different regulatory events.
  • Check for an actual launch. Infrastructure may make future offerings possible without making a contract live.
  • Read the product’s current terms. Availability, jurisdiction, eligibility, and suitability are product-specific; the approval announcement does not establish that every U.S. customer can trade derivatives.
