1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCodon compiles supported Python-style code ahead of time into native machine code. Its project says typical single-threaded programs run 10–100× or more faster than vanilla Python, but that is Codon’s broad performance claim—not a guarantee for your script. Codon is also not a drop-in replacement for CPython, so compatibility matters as much as speed.
What Codon does
Codon is a Python implementation and compiler built for static, ahead-of-time compilation. Rather than relying on CPython to interpret Python bytecode at runtime, it translates supported code through parsing, type checking, intermediate-representation generation and optimization, LLVM lowering, and native code generation. Ahead-of-time compilation is the default; Codon also offers a just-in-time mode. See the official Codon project and its compilation documentation.
Codon’s project describes typical single-threaded speedups of 10–100× or more over vanilla Python, and says performance is typically on par with, and sometimes better than, C/C++. Treat those as project-reported comparisons, not independent benchmark results or a prediction for a particular program. Your outcome depends on the code, supported features, workload, data, and hardware.
When the 100× claim may—and may not—apply
A large speedup is most plausible when a meaningful share of runtime is spent in computational work Codon can compile. The headline does not establish a result for every Python workload. If the bottleneck lies elsewhere, or the code depends on unsupported runtime behavior, compiling it may not deliver the claimed improvement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Workload: Identify the operations consuming time; do not assume that all Python programs are equally suitable for compilation.
- Compatibility: Check whether the syntax, dynamic behavior, and libraries your program requires are supported.
- Execution route: Choose between compiling a supported program as a whole and using Codon’s documented JIT approach for selected functions in a Python project.
- Parallel hardware: Consider multithreading or GPU features only if they fit the program and the available hardware.
- Validation: Compare correctness and runtime against your own CPython baseline using representative inputs.
Codon is not a drop-in CPython replacement
Codon does not implement every feature of CPython. Its static-compilation model excludes some dynamic Python behavior; examples discussed in the research paper include dynamic type manipulation and runtime reflection. A script that runs in CPython may therefore need changes, or may not be a suitable Codon target. The project repository describes this compatibility limitation, and the 2023 Codon paper gives design context.
For larger Python projects, Codon documents a JIT decorator and Python interoperability. These options can let a developer apply Codon to selected functions or call Python modules; they do not mean every Python package or the entire project is compiled to native code.

Ways to use Codon
Compile and run a program
The project documents this optimized run command:
codon run -release file.py
To build an executable instead, use:
codon build -release file.py
These are Codon’s documented commands, not evidence that any arbitrary CPython script will run unchanged. Its compilation documentation also covers generating LLVM IR.
Use Codon within a Python project
Where whole-program migration is impractical, investigate the documented JIT decorator and Python interoperability for the functions and modules you need. Check the supported behavior and test the integration; interoperability is not universal compatibility with every Python library.

Capabilities for numerical and parallel workloads
Codon documents native multithreading with OpenMP, GPU programming, a compiled NumPy implementation, and Python interoperability. These features make computational and numerical programs reasonable candidates to evaluate, but their presence does not guarantee that a particular workload will run faster. Suitability depends on how the program is written, the data and libraries involved, and the hardware and execution mode.

How to evaluate Codon on your program
- Choose a representative workload. Use inputs and runtime conditions that reflect the work you actually need to speed up.
- Check compatibility first. Review the Codon documentation for required language features and libraries; pay particular attention to dynamic behavior and runtime reflection.
- Establish a CPython baseline. Measure the existing program on the same machine and with the same input you will use for the Codon comparison.
- Compile and check correctness. Try the appropriate AOT or JIT route, then verify that the output matches the original program.
- Benchmark the target workload. Compare repeated runs under consistent conditions. Record the actual result for your code rather than treating the project’s 10–100×-or-more claim as your expected result.
