The essential skill is judging whether a proposed change solves the actual problem, respects the system’s constraints, and behaves acceptably when conditions are less than ideal.
What code judgment means when AI can write code
Code judgment is the ability to assess a proposed change in context: whether it addresses the right problem, fits the system, and has acceptable consequences. AI changes how much code a developer may inspect and where that code came from. It does not make a tidy-looking diff proof of correctness.
A program that runs has shown that it is executable, not that its approach is appropriate. The Tsinghua University AI General Education Redbook puts the distinction this way: “The fact that a system can run shows only that a proposal is executable.” In software, a change can compile and pass a narrow test while still violating an invariant, mishandling an edge case, weakening security, or creating avoidable operational work.
So the useful shift is from asking only “Can I produce code?” to asking “Does this code deserve to exist here?” That requires more than syntax knowledge: it draws on evidence, method fit, risk, values, accountability, and decisions about what should be done by a human or AI. Tsinghua’s framework addresses judgment broadly; it is not a study measuring developer performance.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Build a mental model before delegating
Review is stronger when you know what the system is supposed to preserve. Before asking an AI tool to change code, identify the behavior that matters and the constraints around it. Foundational knowledge helps you notice when a plausible implementation conflicts with the way the system actually works.
Practice makes that knowledge concrete. Build a small version of a feature, trace how it fails, measure a slow path, or read the relevant logs; then compare your understanding with the generated alternative. The point is not to reject AI assistance. It is to develop a reference model that lets you recognize when a proposed solution is solving the wrong problem or overlooking an important condition.

- Write down the problem in terms of user or system behavior, not just the requested code edit.
- List constraints and invariants the change must preserve.
- Specify what evidence would convince you the result works, including meaningful failure cases.
- Note uncertainty that needs investigation rather than allowing a confident-looking implementation to conceal it.
Use a plan-first review workflow
Systems Thinking Lab describes a plan-first workflow: anticipate a plan, review the diff, and judge the result before shipping. Its About page says, “AI writes the code now. You decide whether it is right.” This is the provider’s framing, not a measured finding about all AI coding tools, but the workflow is a useful discipline.
- Define the task and acceptance conditions. Record the intended behavior, constraints, and what would count as a correct result before prompting or delegating.
- Predict or request the plan. Decide what kind of change you expect, what parts of the system it should touch, and what risks deserve attention. Compare that expectation with the agent’s proposed approach before focusing on implementation details.
- Inspect the diff against the goal. Trace changed behavior through the surrounding system. Check whether the implementation solves the stated problem without breaking an invariant or adding unrelated complexity.
- Probe assumptions and failure conditions. Consider security implications, stale data, retries, duplicate effects, partial failure, and operational consequences where relevant. A success path alone is rarely enough to justify a change.
- Validate important behavior. Run appropriate tests and inspect their scope. A generated test can help, but it does not independently establish that the test covers the right requirement or that the implementation is safe.
- Make the shipping decision yourself. Resolve consequential questions about risk, maintainability, and acceptable behavior rather than treating the agent’s completion message as approval.
- Reflect after delivery. Record the key assumption, the failure mode considered, and what the review caught or missed. Use that record to improve the next review.
What to examine in the diff

| Review lens | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Problem fit | Does the change address the actual user or system need, or merely implement the wording of a prompt? |
| Evidence and assumptions | What facts support the approach? Which assumptions about inputs, state, dependencies, or usage remain unverified? |
| Correctness and failure behavior | Does it preserve invariants? What happens with invalid input, stale data, timeouts, retries, duplicate actions, or partial failure, when those conditions apply? |
| Security and reliability | Does the change expose data, trust untrusted input, broaden access, or make recovery and dependable operation harder? |
| Maintainability and operations | Can another developer understand and safely change it? Does it add monitoring, support, deployment, or ongoing operational burden? |
| Ownership | Who has evaluated the consequences and approved the risk? Has a human made the consequential decision rather than deferring it to generated output? |
These questions help distinguish a change that merely passes a visible check from one that is justified in its real context. The appropriate tests and risks depend on the system; a small, isolated function and a command-running agent do not call for identical controls.

For stable, well-scoped functions
The Eclipse Foundation describes using AI assistance to generate tests for stable, well-scoped functions, while emphasizing that generated output still needs review and validation. Treat generated tests as proposals: check that they express the intended behavior, exercise meaningful cases, and fail when the relevant behavior is wrong.

For agents that can run commands
An agent that can execute commands can affect files and environments, so restrict its access to what the task requires. The Eclipse Foundation’s March 10, 2026 account describes controlled environments: its agents do not receive production credentials or run inside internal networks. That is an organizational example, not a universal rule, but it illustrates why tool permissions and isolation belong in the review plan.
The Foundation also states: “Developers remain responsible for understanding the problem being solved, reviewing the generated code, and ensuring that any changes meet our security and reliability standards.” Human review and validation remain necessary even when the environment is constrained.

Turn review into better judgment
A single review catches only what someone thinks to look for. After a change ships, compare your expectations with what happened: which assumptions held, which failure modes were missed, and whether the code proved harder to maintain or operate than expected. If a defect escaped, identify the missing signal or question that might have exposed it—not merely the line where it appeared.
That reflection converts experience into reusable judgment. Over time, the aim is to become better at predicting which parts of a proposed change deserve scrutiny, what evidence is sufficient, and when a problem needs a different approach rather than more generated code.
