AI can make a first version of a program much faster to produce. It does not, by itself, make that program reliable, secure, understandable, or economical to own. The distinction matters: a throwaway tool for one task has different obligations from software expected to serve users and change safely for years.
What “code is cheap” means—and what it doesn’t
“Code is cheap” describes a reduction in the effort needed to produce a plausible implementation. A coding assistant can draft functions, tests, and interface elements quickly. But code is only one part of software: the finished system must solve the right problem, behave acceptably in the cases that matter, fit into its environment, and remain usable as that environment changes.
Chris Gregori puts the distinction this way: “The real cost of software isn’t the initial write; it’s the maintenance, the edge cases, the mounting UX debt, and the complexities of data ownership.” Gregori’s essay, dated January 10, 2026, is an argument about where effort moves when code generation gets easier—not evidence that every AI-generated program is defective.
Why a working demo is not the same as production software
A demo usually proves that one intended path can work under a narrow set of conditions. Production software has to cope with real users, changing dependencies, imperfect data, and failures. A successful demonstration is useful evidence, but it does not answer who owns the system or how it behaves outside the demonstrated path.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Gregori illustrates this with a bank changing a CSV export, a website changing its DOM, and a product needing offline support or reliable synchronization. These are examples, not measured incident rates. Each shows how a program can be correct against yesterday’s assumptions and still stop serving its purpose when an external interface, data format, or operating condition changes.
Enterprise concerns extend the same problem: Jan Jikeli’s commentary points to scale, compliance, security, legacy systems, team turnover, and operational failures as work that remains after code has been written. The page lists a January 30, 2026 publication date and an April 15, 2026 update. Jikeli’s commentary is a professional perspective, not a comparative study of AI and non-AI development.

Match the engineering effort to the software’s lifetime and consequences
Not every tool needs the same level of durability. Gregori distinguishes task-specific “personal software” from systems intended to persist, evolve, and serve a wider product or organization. A small script that saves someone time today can be a good result even if nobody plans to maintain it next year. Treating it as a long-lived platform could waste effort.
For a practical decision, consider the intended lifetime and the consequence of failure alongside integrations, data, security or compliance needs, and ongoing maintenance. This is a way to organize the examples—not a formally validated scoring model.

| Question | Short-lived, task-specific tool | Long-lived or production system |
|---|---|---|
| How long must it work? | Only for a defined task or limited period; replacement may be acceptable. | It must remain useful as users, requirements, and dependencies change. |
| What happens if it fails? | Failure may cost time or require a manual workaround. | Failure may disrupt important work, expose data, or affect customers or operations. |
| How much does it depend on others? | Few or easily replaced inputs may be enough. | External interfaces, legacy systems, data flows, and synchronization need explicit ownership. |
| What controls are needed? | Keep safeguards proportionate to the data and consequences involved. | Security, compliance, testing, review, and operational response may be essential. |
The categories are not a license to ignore risk in a “personal” tool. A one-off program that handles sensitive information or can cause significant harm still deserves appropriate safeguards. Conversely, a limited internal utility need not inherit every process used for a customer-facing service.
Where the continuing cost comes from
Understanding the real problem
Generating an implementation does not establish that the requested feature is the right solution. Someone still has to understand users’ needs, constraints, and trade-offs, and decide what behavior is intended. When those are unclear, a polished implementation can simply make the wrong assumption faster.

Edge cases and user experience
Real use rarely follows only the happy path. Invalid or missing input, interrupted workflows, accessibility needs, and confusing error states can make a technically functional feature frustrating or unsafe. Unresolved interaction problems accumulate into UX debt: later changes become harder because users have learned workarounds or because one awkward flow constrains another.
Data and integrations
Software often relies on systems it does not control. A changed export format, website structure, API, or authentication flow can break an integration. Data ownership also means deciding which system is authoritative, how updates and conflicts are handled, and what can be recovered after an error. Offline use and synchronization make those decisions especially visible.

Maintenance and operations
Dependencies age, requirements shift, and the people who understand a system may leave. A product needs a way to detect failures, diagnose them, and make safe changes. Navor Consulting’s discussion likewise emphasizes lifecycle and operational burdens in its software-ownership commentary; the retrieved page’s publication date is not established.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.AI changes engineering work; it does not remove ownership
AI can reduce the time spent producing an initial draft. It can also make it easier to generate more code than a team can thoughtfully review. The engineering question is therefore not just “Can the assistant build it?” but “Can someone explain what it does, verify its behavior, and take responsibility for it after the first version?”
Gregori writes: “AI often feels powerful because it hides the complexity, but as an engineer, your job is to manage that complexity, not ignore it.” His essay argues for retaining that responsibility. The available material does not establish that AI-assisted code is categorically worse, or quantify a general productivity gain; the core distinction is between faster generation and the full cost of ownership.
How to keep coding-agent changes manageable
For changes in a large codebase, Markus Eisele’s WeAreDevelopers World Congress 2026 Europe session listing recommends making intent explicit, constraining the change, breaking work into small tasks, and reviewing generated output. Its description advises teams to “treat generated code like a pull request from a teammate you don’t fully trust yet.” That wording belongs to the session description, not a verified transcript of the talk. The session listing is dated July 10, 2026.
Quick Recap
- State the intended behavior. Describe the user problem, constraints, and what should happen in important cases before asking for an implementation.
- Limit the scope. Ask for a focused change rather than a broad rewrite, and identify which files or interfaces should remain untouched where that matters.
- Work in small steps. Make changes reviewable, with a clear purpose and observable result for each task.
- Verify the result. Review the diff, run relevant tests, and check assumptions about data, dependencies, and external interfaces. Do not treat generated tests as proof if their expectations are unexamined.
- Assign an owner. Decide who will respond when the change breaks or needs revision; a coding assistant cannot take operational responsibility for the system.
Questions to ask before calling it done
- Does the implementation address the actual user need, or only the prompt as written?
- Which failure cases matter, and how can the team detect or recover from them?
- What external systems, formats, or data assumptions could change?
- Who can explain the behavior and review the next change?
- Is the expected lifetime short enough that replacement is acceptable, or does the system need an explicit maintenance plan?
