Code coverage can affect your performance review only if your organization chooses to make it part of evaluation. The evidence here does not show that employers commonly use coverage percentages to decide raises or promotions. Coverage is useful as a team testing signal, but a percentage alone cannot show whether tests check meaningful behavior or whether an engineer has delivered valuable work.

What code coverage tells you—and what it does not

Code coverage measures how much of a program executes when a test suite runs. It can help a team locate code that its tests do not reach. But reaching a line is not the same as testing its behavior: a test may execute code without checking the important result, and uncovered areas do not all carry equal risk.

Google Research describes coverage as an established test adequacy measure, while cautioning that simply presenting uncovered code does not reliably direct developers to the most useful work. Its 2024 Productive Coverage approach prioritized uncovered code that resembled already-tested code or ran frequently in production. In the authors’ evaluation, it improved coverage and had positive quality outcomes, positive developer sentiment, no negative effect on authoring efficiency, and modestly improved review efficiency. Those findings concern that evaluated system; they do not guarantee the same results for every team. Google Research: Productive Coverage

Coverage therefore answers a narrower question than “Are we testing well?” It can reveal a gap worth investigating, but the test’s assertions, the code’s importance, and the project’s risks determine whether closing that gap is worthwhile.

Does coverage predict bugs or promotions?

It is not a reliable stand-alone defect predictor

A 2017 study of 100 large open-source Java projects found an insignificant correlation between project-level coverage and post-release bug counts, and no correlation at the file level. This result does not show that testing is useless; it shows that coverage percentage alone did not predict bugs in that particular sample and context. It should not be generalized automatically to other languages, organizations, or codebases. Singapore Management University repository record for the 2017 study

Its effect on careers is not established as common practice

The available evidence does not establish how many employers use code coverage in performance reviews or promotions, or how often that use affects career outcomes. A company may include coverage in an engineering review, but that is an organizational choice, not an established universal norm.

LinkedIn’s Developer Productivity and Happiness Framework warns against using individual output counts to determine performance, noting that numbers such as lines of code or changes submitted can obscure business impact and encourage perverse incentives. It recommends linking measurement to project goals. This is guidance about engineering metrics generally, not research on coverage-based promotions. LinkedIn’s Developer Productivity and Happiness Framework

A 2023 code-review survey is also not evidence that coverage determines careers: it studied code velocity, not test coverage. It collected 75 responses—39 from industry and 36 from open-source contributors—and found career growth ranked lowest among the positive effects respondents associated with increased code velocity. The authors discuss how other output measures can affect careers, but those findings cannot be transferred directly to coverage. How to handle a coverage target at work

If a review conversation includes a coverage percentage, treat it as a prompt to discuss the work behind the number—not as a complete measure of your contribution. Ask what the target is meant to protect, which code is important, and whether tests verify outcomes that matter.

  • Clarify what is measured. Is the figure line coverage, branch coverage, or another measure, and does it apply to a project, a change, or an individual?
  • Discuss the uncovered code’s risk. A gap in frequently executed or consequential code may deserve attention before a gap in rarely used, low-impact code.
  • Check what tests assert. Tests should verify meaningful behavior, not merely execute lines to raise a score.
  • Make trade-offs explicit. Ask whether pursuing a threshold could displace more important work or encourage tests that add little confidence.
  • Connect evidence to project outcomes. Discuss quality, reliability, collaboration, judgment, and progress toward the project goal alongside any metric.

These questions follow from the limits of raw coverage and the case for goal-linked measurement; they are a practical way to make a metric conversation more informative, not a proven universal review framework.

Coverage as a diagnostic versus an individual target

The same metric can support useful engineering work or distort it, depending on how a team applies it.

Practice More useful approach Riskier approach
Purpose Use coverage to spot testing gaps at team or project level. Treat an individual percentage as a proxy for performance.
Test quality Review whether tests assert important behavior. Reward execution of lines without checking outcomes.
Prioritization Focus on uncovered code according to importance and risk. Apply the same blanket threshold regardless of code context.
Evaluation Consider coverage trends alongside project goals and outcomes. Judge quality or contribution from coverage in isolation.

This comparison is a practical synthesis, not a measurement of how organizations currently operate. Its central distinction is straightforward: coverage can inform a decision, but it cannot substitute for one.
