To score higher in CSSBattle, first make your target image match as closely as possible, then reduce the number of characters in your solution. The game rewards both visual similarity and compact code, so a tiny fragment that renders the wrong shapes is not a good solution. These four code-golf techniques help you look for shorter constructions without losing sight of the image.
How CSSBattle scoring works
CSSBattle’s official FAQ describes the objective as reproducing a target image with as little HTML and CSS as possible. Its scoring algorithm considers two things: how closely the target is replicated and the number of characters in the code. The platform recommends reaching a 100% visual match first; reducing characters becomes the next priority.
CSSBattle permits HTML and CSS, but disallows JavaScript, SVG, images, and external assets. You can play for free, but you must sign in to submit a solution and receive a score. The FAQ says submissions are scored in headless Chromium on Ubuntu 18.04 with default browser settings. Test in Chrome or Chromium, or another browser the FAQ identifies as tested, rather than assuming every browser parses and renders a fragment identically.
1. Style the document elements already available
Before adding markup, see whether the existing html and body elements can form part of the image. The target document already has those elements, so styling them can save the characters needed to write an extra tag such as div or p.

For example, if the image needs a full-canvas background plus one shape, try making the body the background and use a pseudo-element or another available element for the shape. Whether that beats a solution with explicit markup depends on the target and the selectors required; compare the complete character count, not just the markup.
CSSBattle’s FAQ says submitted code is rendered as written, without the platform adding a DOCTYPE. That is a reason to verify your approach in the game’s renderer instead of assuming a conventional full-page setup.

2. Compare units by character cost
Do not assume pixels are always the shortest way to express a position or size. Alex Walker’s SitePoint walkthrough describes targets measuring 400px wide by 300px high, where percentages can sometimes encode positions more compactly than pixel values. That dimension is the article’s description of the game canvas, not a guarantee about every current target.
Try plausible units for each value and compare both the rendering and total source length. A coordinate that is shorter as a percentage in one design may be shorter in pixels in another. Unitless zero can also save characters where the property accepts it, but unit omission is property-specific: do not generalize it to values such as lengths in box-shadow.

3. Use selectors and the cascade to share work
Selectors can reduce repeated declarations. A broad selector such as * may let you apply a shared property to multiple elements in one rule, while later, more-specific rules can override a value for an individual element. This can be shorter than repeating the same declaration across several selectors.
For example, if several shapes share a color but one needs a different position or fill, test a shared rule followed by a compact override. Count the selector and punctuation characters as well as the declarations, and check the actual result: a broad rule may affect elements you did not intend, while a more specific selector may cost more than separate rules for a particular target.

4. Test parser tolerance only after the image works
Once the solution renders correctly, try removing optional-looking characters one change at a time. The SitePoint article suggests experiments such as stripping whitespace, omitting some closing tags, removing a closing style tag, or testing a final brace. These are parser-tolerance experiments, not dependable rules for general CSS.
- Save a version that produces the intended image.
- Remove one candidate space, delimiter, or closing token.
- Check both the rendered image and the score in CSSBattle.
- Keep the change only if the image remains correct and the submitted solution is accepted.
A fragment that happens to work in a local browser may behave differently in CSSBattle’s headless Chromium scoring environment. If an edit breaks rendering or changes the match, restore the last working version and try another reduction.

A practical order for each challenge
- Build a solution that reproduces the target as closely as you can.
- Trim whitespace and redundant syntax, checking the image after changes.
- Look for a shorter construction using existing document elements, alternate units, and shared selectors.
- Test parser-tolerance shortcuts individually in the game’s renderer.
Walker’s 2019 walkthrough also shows a box-shadow-based alternative for one target. Treat it as a historical example of rethinking a construction, not a universal template or a current leaderboard benchmark. The useful habit is to reconsider how a shape is built when ordinary minification stops saving characters.
Keep code golf separate from production CSS
CSSBattle rewards compact solutions under a constrained set of rules. Production stylesheets have different priorities: readability, maintainability, predictable behavior, and accessibility. A selector or omitted token that is clever in a challenge may make real application CSS harder to understand or less robust. As Walker puts it, “Writing good ‘CSS Battles code’ isn’t the same as writing good ‘production code’”; the value is in experimenting with CSS, not copying golfed fragments into an application.
