Cockroach Labs’ 2024 database release, CockroachDB 24.2, introduced pgvector-compatible Vector Search, Generic Query Plans, and a Standard cloud tier. The release was framed as a way to support AI-related workloads and give customers another pricing option. That pricing context is now historical: the Basic, Standard, and Advanced terms on Cockroach Labs’ pricing page apply only to eligible existing clusters, while new deployments are directed to Cockroach Continuum.
What CockroachDB 24.2 introduced
Cockroach Labs presented CockroachDB 24.2 at RoachFest 2024 as a resilient, converged database for AI-driven applications. Its headline additions were Vector Search, Generic Query Plans, and a faster optional cadence for innovation releases. The company retained a traditional six-month release cadence for customers who preferred less frequent upgrades. Cockroach Labs’ RoachFest 2024 announcement describes the features and intended use cases.
Vector Search for similarity and AI application workflows
The release added vector search compatible with PostgreSQL’s pgvector API. Cockroach Labs said this would let developers keep operational data and AI application workloads in one horizontally scalable database solution. The company named similarity search, recommendation systems, LangChain-based tooling, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and large language model (LLM) backends as use cases. These are vendor-described applications, not independently verified performance results.
In practice, vector search can help an application retrieve items or passages by how closely their vector representations match a query. Combining that capability with operational data may simplify an architecture, but the announcement does not establish that CockroachDB will outperform a dedicated vector database for every workload. The right fit depends on the application’s data model, query patterns, scaling needs, and operational requirements.

Generic Query Plans to reuse optimization work
Generic Query Plans were introduced to reduce repeated query-planning work. Cockroach Labs described optimizing a plan once and caching it for reuse, which it said could lower planning latency and CPU use for complex queries such as joins and index lookups. The company announced the feature as being in preview in 2024; its stated benefits should be treated as potential gains, not guaranteed or independently benchmarked outcomes.
James Lupolt, a database engineer at Hard Rock Digital, said the company was excited about the feature’s potential to reduce complex-query latency and operating costs while maintaining resilience. His statement was a customer perspective on the preview, not published benchmark evidence.

How the 2024 price-flexibility claim worked
Cockroach Labs introduced Standard in 2024 as an intermediate cloud option. The company positioned it between Serverless, later renamed Basic, and CockroachDB Dedicated, later renamed Advanced: Standard was intended for workloads that needed more enterprise features than the lower tier offered but found Dedicated too expensive. The stated balance covered provisioned capacity, security, observability, performance, and cost efficiency.
The company’s 2024 announcement also cited Gartner’s September 2023 forecast that more than 30% of enterprises would have adopted vector databases by 2026, up from fewer than 2% “today” in the report’s 2023 context. It also cited Gartner’s forecast that more than 60% of vector database deployments would be cloud-based managed services rather than self-managed products. These were forecasts, not confirmed 2026 adoption figures. The forecasts are referenced in Cockroach Labs’ RoachFest announcement and its CockroachDB 24.2 release materials.

What cloud pricing means for new deployments now
Cockroach Labs’ pricing page, accessed September 28, 2026, lists Basic at $0 per month, Standard in preview starting at $0.18 per hour for 2 vCPUs, and Advanced starting at $0.60 per hour for 4 vCPUs. Those figures apply to pay-as-you-go and committed-use customers with clusters created before September 15, 2026. They remain applicable during the customers’ current terms, but the plans are no longer available for new purchases. The page directs new deployments to Cockroach Continuum pricing. Check that page for current terms rather than treating the older tier names or rates as new-customer offers.
Cockroach Continuum’s announced billing approach
On September 15, 2026, Cockroach Labs announced Cockroach Continuum. The company says it pools capacity across database fleets, separates compute and storage scaling through its Plenum substrate, and bills compute and storage according to vCPU-hours and bytes used rather than provisioned peak capacity. Cockroach Aegis, described as an AI operations layer, diagnoses issues and recommends actions while administrators set policy. The company marked automatic compute scaling as “Coming soon” in its announcement, so it should not be assumed to be generally available. Pricing and rollout details can change; consult the Continuum launch announcement and current pricing page for the latest published status.

How to assess whether CockroachDB fits
The 2024 feature announcement is not enough on its own to decide whether to adopt CockroachDB. Compare the current offering against the demands of the specific workload, especially because Standard’s original role is a historical pricing comparison rather than a new-purchase option.
- Workload shape: Identify whether the application needs vector similarity alongside operational data, and whether its query mix includes complex joins or frequent plan generation.
- Cost model: Compare current Continuum compute and storage billing with alternatives using realistic demand patterns; bursty and steady workloads may behave differently under usage-based billing.
- Scaling: Confirm which scaling capabilities are available now and distinguish them from features announced as forthcoming.
- Deployment constraints: Check the current region and cloud availability, security and compliance requirements, and uptime commitments against the workload’s requirements.
- Eligibility and terms: Verify current pricing and purchase eligibility directly, rather than relying on the older Basic, Standard, and Advanced plan descriptions.
Release cadence and what the announcement does not prove
Cockroach Labs’ 24.2 announcement paired quarterly “Innovation Releases” with the existing six-month release cadence for customers seeking less frequent upgrades. That offered a choice in update rhythm, not evidence that every customer should adopt each innovation release immediately.

Similarly, the release established that Cockroach Labs announced pgvector-compatible vector search and Generic Query Plans, but the cited materials do not provide independent comparative benchmarks showing how they perform against alternatives. Evaluate them against representative queries and operational requirements before making a production decision.
