Use coaxial for an antenna or compatible cable-TV signal going into a TV’s antenna/RF input. Use HDMI to connect a compatible set-top box, game console, streaming player, or other device to the TV for digital audio and video. A setup can use both: coaxial brings the broadcast or provider feed to a tuner or box, and HDMI carries that device’s output to the TV.
What each connection does
| Connection | Typical role | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Coaxial | Carries an antenna or compatible cable-TV RF feed to a TV’s antenna/RF input or to compatible receiving equipment. The FCC’s historical U.S. converter-box guide shows a coaxial lead running from the box’s “Out to TV” connection to the television’s “Antenna in” port (FCC setup guide). | Confirm the TV or receiving device has the matching antenna/RF input and follow the antenna, provider, and TV instructions for setup or channel scanning. |
| HDMI | Connects compatible consumer electronics to a TV or display for digital audio and video. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes it as an interface connecting displays with consumer-electronics devices (HDMI overview). | Check that both devices have compatible HDMI ports and that the cable category meets the system’s video and audio feature requirements. |
These connections have different jobs, so there is no universal picture-quality winner independent of the signal, equipment, and setup. HDMI is generally the connection from an external device’s audio/video output to the TV; coaxial is for an RF feed received by a tuner or compatible TV input.
Which cable to use for common TV setups
Antenna connected directly to the TV
Connect the antenna lead to the TV’s antenna/RF input. Then follow the television’s own setup instructions to scan for channels. Labels and menus vary by model and region; the FCC guide illustrates the connection for a historical U.S. converter-box setup, not a universal current TV procedure (FCC guide).
Cable-TV feed or provider equipment
A coaxial connection may carry a cable-TV feed to compatible receiving equipment or a TV input. Provider equipment and current service arrangements differ, so use the provider’s instructions. If a set-top box receives the feed and provides HDMI output, connect the box to the TV by HDMI when both devices support it. The FCC’s cable-TV material describes coaxial’s role in cable distribution but is historical U.S. context, not guidance for every provider today (FCC cable-TV information).

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set-top box, game console, or media player
Use HDMI from the device’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV, provided both ports are compatible. Select the corresponding HDMI input on the TV. If the source device receives an antenna or provider signal separately, that incoming connection may be coaxial while the device-to-TV connection is HDMI.
Soundbar or receiver using TV audio
To send audio from the TV to a compatible soundbar or receiver over HDMI, connect the TV’s port marked ARC or eARC to the corresponding supported port on the audio system. ARC allows a compatible TV to return audio to a compatible receiver or soundbar over the HDMI cable; support at both ends is required (HDMI 1.4b feature information). Check both manuals for port labels, setup, and the specific audio features supported.

How to choose an HDMI cable
- Check the devices’ requirements. Identify the video and audio features the source, TV, and any receiver or soundbar need to support.
- Choose a cable category that meets those requirements. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s cable overview identifies several cable categories; Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supports systems up to 48 Gbps. That is a cable specification, not a guarantee that every connected device can use those capabilities (HDMI cable overview).
- Look for the official cable name and label. HDMI Licensing Administrator says HDMI cable products should carry the official cable name, with packaging showing the cable-name logo and/or appropriate certification label (HDMI cable overview).
A cable does not upgrade the TV or source device. A higher-capability cable is useful only when the connected equipment and intended signal need that capability. For coaxial, verify connector fit and suitability for the particular antenna or provider arrangement; the cited FCC material does not establish a universal coaxial grade or length recommendation.

- For an antenna or RF feed: look for an antenna/RF input on the TV or receiving box.
- For a source device: confirm it has an HDMI output and that the TV has an available HDMI input.
- For audio return: check that the TV and audio device both support the required ARC or eARC feature on their designated ports.
- For a mismatch: consult the device manuals or provider before buying an adapter; the right solution depends on the exact ports and signal path.
Port names, channel-scan steps, provider service arrangements, and HDMI feature support vary by equipment and region. The FCC connection guides cited above are historical U.S. sources and are useful for illustrating connection roles, not as universal current instructions.
