For a new serverless app expected to run beyond the next few months, choose Cloudflare Workers. It has a broader documented edge and data-services ecosystem, and its paid plan starts at $5 per month. Deno Deploy remains technically capable, but Deno announced on October 9, 2026 that the service will continue operating for six months before shutting down. That makes Deno Deploy a migration source or a short-term option with an explicit exit plan—not a sound default for a long-lived new app.

The choice is not a benchmark-backed claim that Workers is faster. It comes down to product lifecycle, deployment geography, included services, runtime fit, and how each platform meters usage.

Name Best for Key spec Free plan / price Platforms Checked
Cloudflare Workers New applications that need global edge deployment or integrated data and application services 100,000 requests per day on Free; Paid starts at $5 per month and includes 10 million requests and 30 million CPU milliseconds per month Free; Paid from $5/month JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Rust; frameworks include React, Vue, Svelte, Next, Astro, and React Router Nov 2026
Deno Deploy Existing applications that need to be assessed and migrated, or short-lived projects with a planned exit Free includes 1 million requests, 20 GiB egress, and 10 active CPU hours per month; service announced to shut down after six months of continued operation Free; Pro $20/month Full support for Deno and Node applications; first-class support for Next.js, Astro, and SvelteKit Nov 2026

What is the difference between Cloudflare Workers and Deno Deploy?

Both run JavaScript and TypeScript applications without asking you to manage conventional servers, but they differ in network footprint, platform breadth, pricing meters, and—most importantly now—product lifecycle. Cloudflare positions Workers as a serverless platform deployed across its global network. Deno’s current comparison table lists two regions for Deno Deploy.

Cloudflare’s broader proposition is an integrated platform: a Worker can be paired with services for state, storage, databases, queues, workflows, and AI. Deno Deploy’s published comparison documents useful application-platform features such as framework support, deployment options, rollback, logs, tracing, and metrics, but lists queues as unsupported. Those capability differences matter when deciding whether to assemble a larger application around one provider’s services.

The lifecycle difference is decisive for a new long-lived service. On October 9, 2026, Deno announced that the Deno team was joining Cloudflare and that future development work would focus on the shared platform rather than a separate runtime and hosting service. Deno said Deploy would continue operating for six months before shutdown. Six months from the announcement is approximately April 9, 2027, but that is arithmetic, not a calendar shutdown date Deno explicitly published.

Should I use Cloudflare Workers or Deno Deploy for a new app?

Use Workers as the default for a new application expected to remain in production. Use Deno Deploy only if a concrete constraint makes it necessary and you are prepared to migrate before the announced shutdown window.

Workers is the more defensible choice when global edge distribution is central, when you want application data services from the same platform, or when the app already fits into Cloudflare’s network, DNS, CDN, security, or data products. The $5 paid entry point may also suit teams that want a low-cost paid tier, although the actual bill depends on request and CPU usage.

Deno Deploy can still make sense as a temporary home for a project that already depends on its runtime behavior or deployment workflow, or for a short experiment with a documented destination and an exit date. Its current docs list full Deno and Node application support and first-class support for several popular frameworks. Those are technical reasons to understand an existing deployment, not reasons to ignore the shutdown announcement.

For a production app, make the lifecycle tradeoff explicit in a decision record: who owns the migration, what must be compatible, what data and domains must move, and how much time is reserved for verification. Deno has said paying customers moving to Workers will receive migration support, but the announcement does not remove the need to plan and validate the application’s own transition.

Which platform has the stronger global deployment model?

Workers has the stronger documented global-network positioning: Cloudflare describes it as running across its global network. Deno’s current comparison table lists two regions, so do not assume that the two services offer equivalent deployment geography.

That distinction is relevant for applications where serving logic near users is an architectural requirement. It is not, by itself, proof that every Worker request will be faster than every Deno Deploy request. Real response time depends on an application’s code, data access, caching, network path, and user location. No independent latency or throughput benchmark is included here, so a performance winner cannot responsibly be claimed.

Also distinguish where code executes from where dependent data lives. An edge-deployed handler can still wait on a remote database or another upstream service. Cloudflare’s platform lists products such as D1, KV, Durable Objects, and Hyperdrive for different data and state needs, but the right choice depends on the application’s consistency, access, and migration requirements—not just the number of locations in a platform description.

How do the runtimes and framework support compare?

Both platforms document support broad enough for many JavaScript and TypeScript applications, but their support language is not identical. Cloudflare lists JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, and Rust, alongside frameworks including React, Vue, Svelte, Next, Astro, and React Router. Deno lists full support for Deno and Node applications, plus first-class support for Next.js, Astro, and SvelteKit.

Before choosing, check the requirements of the specific app rather than relying on a framework name alone. Confirm that its runtime APIs, dependencies, build process, and deployment assumptions work on the destination platform. In particular, an existing Deno Deploy project may rely on Deno-specific behavior even if it also uses a familiar framework. A platform-level compatibility label is not a guarantee that every project can move unchanged.

For a new app, test the app’s actual dependency and build path against the chosen platform before committing to an architecture. For an existing app, inventory the runtime APIs and external services it uses, then treat migration compatibility as a project-specific question. This is especially important when the app relies on platform features such as scheduled jobs, caching, environment separation, or deployment-specific configuration.

Which is cheaper: Cloudflare Workers or Deno Deploy?

There is no universal cheaper option because the platforms meter different resources. Cloudflare’s pricing emphasizes requests and CPU milliseconds; Deno’s plans separately list requests, egress, active CPU time, memory time, revision storage, and KV storage. A request allowance on one plan is not directly equivalent to a request allowance on the other.

The following figures are from the platforms’ published pricing pages and were checked in Nov 2026.

Plan Price Included usage Important billing detail
Cloudflare Workers Free $0 100,000 requests per day Free-plan CPU time is limited to 10 ms per request.
Cloudflare Workers Paid Starts at $5/month 10 million requests and 30 million CPU milliseconds per month Additional requests cost $0.30 per million; additional CPU costs $0.02 per million CPU milliseconds. Cloudflare says the plan has no additional data-transfer or throughput charges.
Deno Deploy Free $0/month 1 million requests, 20 GiB egress, 10 active CPU hours, 150 GiB-hours memory time, 10 GiB revision storage, and 1 GiB KV storage Multiple resource allowances apply, so requests alone do not describe the plan’s limits.
Deno Deploy Pro $20/month 5 million requests, 200 GiB egress, 50 active CPU hours, and 750 GiB-hours memory time Compare the complete usage profile, including egress and CPU, rather than just request totals.

At the entry level, Deno’s free plan includes a larger monthly request figure than the Workers Free daily allowance might suggest, but that is not enough to call it cheaper: Deno also meters egress, active CPU, memory time, and storage, while Cloudflare’s documented paid model has its own request and CPU thresholds. Convert expected traffic into each platform’s billing units before estimating cost. For Workers Paid, include both monthly requests and CPU milliseconds; for Deno, account for all the resource dimensions relevant to the app.

Cloudflare documents a $5 minimum monthly charge for Paid, with overages after the included request and CPU allowances. Deno’s listed Pro plan is $20 per month. Neither headline price alone predicts the cost of a production workload, and neither price resolves the platform-lifecycle issue: a low-cost plan is not a long-term value if the service is scheduled to shut down.

What limits should I check before deploying?

Check CPU, memory, request, subrequest, and egress limits against the app’s workload before committing. The limits use different units and apply differently, so compare them to your expected request shape rather than treating one platform’s number as directly equivalent to another’s.

  • Workers memory: Cloudflare documents 128 MB per isolate.
  • Workers CPU: The Free plan documents 10 ms per request. On Paid, CPU can be configured up to five minutes per HTTP request.
  • Workers subrequests: Paid accounts list up to 10,000 subrequests per request.
  • Deno plan allowances: Deno lists active CPU hours and memory time alongside request and egress allowances, with different amounts on Free and Pro.

These figures describe platform limits and plan allowances; they do not establish which platform performs better for a particular workload. Check the current documentation and the selected plan when your design approaches a limit, especially for CPU-heavy handlers, large responses, or request paths that call multiple services.

What services and operational tools are built in?

Cloudflare documents a wider integrated collection of services around Workers, which can reduce the number of separate platform choices an application needs to make. The options include Durable Objects for stateful coordination, D1 serverless SQL, KV for low-latency key-value reads, Queues for guaranteed delivery, Hyperdrive for external database connectivity, and Workflows for long-running operations with retries.

The same overview also lists R2 object storage with a zero-egress positioning, Workers AI, Vectorize, Browser Run, caching, and image services. These are platform capabilities, not a requirement to use every service. A simple stateless API may need none of them; an app with persistent coordination, background work, or storage may benefit from having them available within one ecosystem.

Deno’s comparison table lists development and production environment variables, CDN caching, databases, cron, GitHub and CLI deployment, instant rollback, logs, tracing, and metrics. It lists queues as unsupported. This gives existing Deno users operational features to account for during migration, but the published lifecycle makes it important to understand how those workflows will map to a destination before extending the deployment.

For either platform, plan observability and recovery before production. Identify how you will view logs and traces, separate configuration between environments, roll back a release, and recover or replay background work. The exact implementation should follow the app’s needs; the platform comparison alone does not establish that operational processes transfer automatically.

How should I approach a Deno Deploy migration?

Start by treating migration as a compatibility and operations exercise, not as a one-click hosting change. Deno announced migration support for paying customers moving to Workers, but each application still needs its code, configuration, data, and deployment process reviewed.

  1. Set a migration owner and deadline. Use the six-month continuation period announced October 9, 2026 as a planning constraint. The approximately April 9, 2027 date is an inference, not an explicit published shutdown date, so confirm the current service status and dates with Deno before scheduling a final cutover.
  2. Inventory the application. Record runtime APIs, framework and dependency versions, environment variables, scheduled jobs, databases, KV usage, caching behavior, domains, and any Deno Deploy-specific settings.
  3. Map platform features. Identify what currently depends on Deno Deploy’s documented databases, cron, CDN caching, environment separation, logs, tracing, metrics, or rollback. Decide which Cloudflare services or application changes will replace each dependency; do not assume a one-to-one equivalent without checking the target’s current documentation.
  4. Validate the build and runtime. Build and deploy a migration candidate, then check required APIs and dependencies in the target environment. Framework support is useful evidence, but does not replace an app-specific compatibility check.
  5. Recreate configuration and data paths. Configure secrets and environment-specific values, and plan how databases, KV data, scheduled tasks, and domains will be handled. Choose cutover and rollback conditions before production traffic moves.
  6. Verify behavior after deployment. Check representative routes, background tasks, external integrations, logs, traces, and recovery procedures. Keep the old deployment available during the transition only while it remains supported and operationally appropriate.

Do not wait until the approximate shutdown window to begin. The migration may involve more than translating application code: data, domains, secrets, observability, and deployment permissions can all affect the cutover. Paying customers can seek the migration support Deno announced, but should still retain ownership of the app-specific inventory and verification work.

What should I choose based on my situation?

Your situation Practical choice Why
Starting a new app intended to stay in production Cloudflare Workers Workers has the stronger documented global-network positioning and a broader integrated service set; Deno Deploy has an announced shutdown timeline.
Building around edge logic, state, queues, data, or workflows Cloudflare Workers The documented ecosystem includes services for those needs.
Already running a Deno Deploy application Assess and plan a migration The service continues temporarily, but is announced to shut down; compatibility and operational dependencies need review.
Running a short experiment that must use Deno Deploy Only with a defined exit plan The technical service remains available for the announced continuation period, but a new long-term dependency carries lifecycle risk.
Choosing solely on expected speed Do not decide from these figures alone No independent performance benchmark is provided here; workload-specific measurement would be needed.

How these options were compared

This decision weighs documented global deployment positioning, runtime and framework support, plan pricing and limits, built-in data and operational services, and the announced product lifecycle. The recommendation does not rely on a latency or throughput test: none is supplied. For a new long-lived application, lifecycle confidence and the breadth of the documented platform make Workers the safer default; for an existing Deno Deploy app, the useful next step is a deliberate migration assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Deno Deploy count network waiting time as CPU usage?

Deno says CPU is billed while an application actively runs code, not while it waits on network I/O. It also says idle applications shut down after roughly 20–30 seconds, so memory is not billed while they are scaled to zero.

Will Deno migrate my application automatically to Workers?

Deno announced migration support for paying customers moving to Workers, but did not promise an automatic or zero-change migration. Treat code compatibility, data movement, configuration, and cutover as application-specific work.

Do free Deno Deploy users get the same migration support as paying customers?

The announcement specifically says migration support will be provided to paying customers. It does not make the same commitment for free users, so free users should not assume personalized migration assistance is included.
