Cloud NAS is useful when you need network file sharing alongside cloud capacity, off-site copies, or access to files across locations. The term can describe a physical NAS connected to cloud storage, or a managed cloud file service that takes over some jobs traditionally handled by a NAS. Which one fits depends on whether you need local access, more capacity, or disaster recovery.
What “cloud NAS” means
A traditional network-attached storage (NAS) device stores files and shares them with computers and other devices on a network. Common uses include shared file storage, active archives, backup and disaster-recovery workflows, media streaming, and frequently accessed images or video, as described in Amazon Web Services’ NAS overview.
“Cloud NAS” is used for two different arrangements. In a hybrid setup, a physical NAS connects to remote cloud storage. A gateway can make cloud data available to applications through familiar file or block-storage protocols, while a local cache can keep frequently used files close at hand. Alternatively, managed cloud file storage can replace some or all of the storage role of a physical NAS; AWS says organizations can augment or replace physical NAS with cloud-based file storage.
These approaches are not interchangeable. With a gateway, you still operate local NAS hardware and configure its connection to cloud storage. With managed cloud storage, the provider operates the storage service, though you still manage access, settings, and costs.

What cloud NAS is good for
Sharing files across a network or locations
A NAS is built to make files available to multiple devices. In a hybrid arrangement, branch offices can use NAS systems to access shared cloud storage through standard protocols, depending on the product and configuration. This can support existing file-sharing workflows without requiring every application or user to interact with a cloud service in the same way.
Keeping frequently used cloud files responsive
Some gateways cache recently or frequently accessed cloud files on the local NAS. That can reduce repeated downloads and latency for files already in the cache. QNAP describes this as enabling “near-LAN speeds,” but that is a vendor product claim, not an independently verified performance guarantee. Files that are not cached still depend on the network connection and the cloud service.

Adding capacity while keeping local workflows
A gateway can present remote storage through familiar file or block protocols, which may help when applications expect a local-style storage interface. QNAP’s Cloud Storage Gateway documentation describes support for protocols including SMB, NFS, FTP, AFP, WebDAV, and iSCSI, depending on the solution. Check the specific product’s protocol support and compatibility before building around it.
Creating an off-site copy
Cloud storage can keep a copy away from the location of the NAS. That matters because a local copy alone may be lost to a fire, natural disaster, or theft affecting the site. Synology’s guidance on data backup describes cloud storage as one option for off-site protection.

Synchronizing files between a NAS and cloud accounts
Synchronization can keep files aligned between a NAS and a public cloud service. Synology Cloud Sync supports one-way or two-way synchronization and offers encryption and compression options. Choose the direction and behavior carefully: synchronization is designed to propagate changes, not necessarily to preserve a recoverable history of them.
When cloud NAS may not be the right fit
- You only need straightforward personal file storage and sharing. A cloud drive may be simpler than buying and configuring a NAS. Managed cloud file storage can also replace some physical NAS duties.
- Your connection is unreliable or slow. Remote data accessed through a cloud mount or gateway depends on network connectivity. Caching may help with frequently used files, but it does not make uncached files available independently of the connection.
- You expect one NAS to protect itself. A NAS in one location does not protect against a site-wide event. Keep an off-site copy and make sure you can restore it.
- You treat sync as a full backup. Two-way synchronization can carry accidental or malicious changes to the other location. For recovery, use a backup workflow with versioning or recovery points suited to the risks you need to address.
- You assume cloud storage always costs less. The total depends on capacity, transfer, retrieval, retention, provider, plan, and usage pattern. Compare the costs for your actual workload rather than relying on a general claim that cloud is cheaper.
Choose the setup by the job you need done
| Need | Local NAS | NAS plus cloud gateway or sync | Managed cloud file storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local network file sharing | Core use | Core use plus cloud connection | Depends on the service and network |
| Local access to frequently used data | Provided by local storage | A local cache may provide it for cached data | Depends on the connection and service features |
| Capacity managed by a cloud provider | No; capacity is owned locally | Cloud capacity complements local storage | Yes; the provider operates the storage service |
| Off-site protection | Requires another destination | Possible, but requires a real backup job | Possible, subject to retention and recovery design |
| Administration | Maintain the NAS and its storage | Maintain the NAS and configure cloud integration | Less storage hardware to operate; access, cost, and service settings still need management |
This is a conceptual comparison, not a performance benchmark. Behavior varies by service, product, software version, and configuration.

How to decide what you need
- Name the job. Decide whether the main need is local file sharing, access from multiple locations, extra capacity, or an off-site backup. These needs can call for different products.
- Choose the storage arrangement. Use a local NAS when local network storage is important. Consider a gateway when you need cloud capacity but want applications to keep using a familiar storage interface. Consider managed cloud file storage when you want the provider to operate the storage service instead of running the storage hardware yourself.
- Plan access and caching. If users need local responsiveness, identify which files must be available locally and whether the chosen gateway caches them. Confirm what happens when an uncached file is requested or the internet connection is unavailable.
- Design backup separately from sync. Keep an off-site copy, select a backup workflow with versioning or recovery points, and test that files can be restored. RAID or bidirectional sync alone does not provide the same recovery history.
- Compare the full cost for your usage. Include storage capacity, data transfer, retrieval, and retention, using current prices for the provider, plan, and geography you expect to use.
What to verify before choosing a product
- Which file or block protocols it supports, and whether those match your applications.
- How local caching works, including what is cached and how much storage it uses.
- What users can access when the connection is unavailable.
- Whether synchronization is one-way or two-way, and what happens when files are deleted or changed.
- What backup versions and retention options are available, and how restoration works.
- Current compatibility, service limits, and plan terms for your product and region.
Product documentation describes intended capabilities, not independent comparative performance. For example, QNAP distinguishes its cloud mount from gateway functionality: a cloud mount does not provide protocol conversion or SSD caching, and its speed depends on the internet connection.
